Work Text:

“No, no, no, no,” Rahne whispered under her breath, trying desperately to stem the flow of blood weeping from Dani’s abdomen. Fighting raged on around them, but the Scottish woman could hardly care.

Dani looked at her softly.

Rahne couldn’t feel how much pain she was in. Stupid woman, still trying tae protect me when she’s halfway tae death’s door herself!

A hand weakly wrapped around Rahne’s wrist.

Crimson continued to soak into the bandages wrapped around the wound, and into the fabric of Rahne’s top. She thought she should care about that, but all she could focus on was her struggling soulmate.

Dani smiled at her, with a certain type of acceptance in her eyes. “It’s okay, Rahney. It’s my time to go.”

“No, not yet.” Rahne pleaded, wrapping a hand around the back of the Cheyenne woman’s head and pressing their foreheads together. “Please, Dani, you cannae leave, please…”

She kept one hand on her abdomen, the other against the back of Dani’s head, but it was like trying to grab sand. Rahne could feel her slipping away. Dani laughed, but it came out a pained wheeze.

“T-Tell my parents I tried, okay? Tell them I’m sorry, a-and that I love them. Tell everyone I-” Dani was struggling to string words together. Rahne was powerless to do anything. “I-I’m sorry.”

Brown eyes met wet green ones. A soft, regretful smile played on Dani’s lips. “I love you, Little Wolf. I’m sorry.”

Dani went still, and Rahne could feel their connection sever. No.

Rahne cradled her now-limp body, letting out an anguished, grief-filled howl.
