Chapter 1: 12 September 1988

Chapter Text

Emerson was a good college - big campus, lots of classes and professionals that clearly knows what they're doing.

Nancy has only been here for a few weeks, but she was adjusting well enough. Being away from Hawkins after everything is..weird.

Focusing on school like a normal young adult after killing monsters and fighting to stay alive for years was weird, after all, no denying that. But Nancy likes having a normal life for now.

It's a Saturday night. Nancy is alone in her room; the dorm is pretty quiet since most students are out at parties or wandering around the city. Nancy eyes were instead focused on the textbook in front of her, taking notes, trying to focus.

She glances at the clock, reading the time: 1.23AM.

She huffs, feeling the headache forming in her head. She really needed to call robin- and then get some sleep.

She closes her textbook, but leaves the light on - she doesn't like sleeping in the dark anymore. After getting ready for bed, she lays down and takes her phone from the desk.

She quickly dials the number and starts talking after hearing the familiar voicemail: the soft voice makes Nancy’s chest feel less heavy right away.

“Robin here! Missed me much? I'll call back as soon as I can”

Nancy smiles faintly.

“Ehi rob,” she says softly.

“It's me. Sorry if I didn't call in two weeks, moving here has been pretty crazy. But.. it's nice. The teachers are really good at explaining things and for once I'm actually interested in what I'm listening to, instead of sitting through boring Highschool classes” a little laugh escapes her lips

“Jonathan called yesterday, it's been a while since I've heard him- since we broke up, at least. But.. we're alright actually. He's a good friend, checks if I'm sleeping and eating enough, you know? Or maybe not, you didn't talk much with him. But he's nice”

She stops for a moment, listening to the silence on the other line.

But she doesn't linger too much on it.

“I had my first journalism class today. I loved it, my teacher writes for a really big journal and he's amazing. He asked us why we want to write and honestly…i didn't really have an answer. I usually would of course, but yeah I'm not sure..” she trails off for a few seconds,

“I'm not sure why I didn't know what to reply. But pretty normal since everything that happened and moving to college..just things being a lot, you know? I'm sure I can do it. You know me after all- I don't just give up easily”

A small yawn interrupts her. God, she's exhausted.

“Sorry Robbie, guess I'm exhausted. I'll tell you more next week when I can call again, promise.”

She hesitates for a second, before adding

“Love you. Hope you're doing okay too”

And the call ends, leaving Nancy with the quiet of her dorm.

She drift off to sleep thinking of brown hair, pretty lips, and a voice that she misses more than she admits.
