Chapter 1: Cooling heated thoughts

Chapter Text

"What?! You didn't tell me the Cosmic Owl was there!"

"I couldn't see him last time!"

"Dude, that means it was a prophetic dream! You have to finish the original dream! Cosmic Owl could be whispering something wildly significant! You have to get Flame Princess and Ice King to fight again so you can see the end of the dream! Make 'em fight!"

Upon hearing Jake's panicked ranting, Finn flew into a panic himself as he ran over to the nearest desk and grabbed a pencil and paper.

However, as he put pencil to paper, he paused. As much as he really wanted to see that dream again, he began to hear a little voice in his head. A voice telling him that he really needed to stop. Prophecy or no prophecy, what he was doing now was not something a hero did. Trying to mess with Flame Princess like this? It was the kind of thing Ice King would do. Not that he really deserved to be on the other end of this either. A feeling of shame began to wash over him.

Jake noticed Finn had been standing eerily still for a while. "Uh, you okay Finn?"

"Jake, I don't think this is a good idea." Finn admitted.

Jake started to look concerned. "Dude, this could be really important. Like 'end of the world' levels of important."

Finn look confused. "What does Flame Princess setting me on fire have to do with the end of the world? Look, how do we know it wasn't some kind of warning? Maybe the Cosmic Owl was trying to tell me to stop all this."

"Don't think that's how it works." Jake admitted. He had a thoughtful look on his face for a moment. "Though, a prophetic dream is supposed to come true no matter what so...maybe it doesn't actually matter what you do?" Jake said with a shrug.

Finn put on a determined look. "Then I'm gonna do what's right. I'm gonna go find Flame Princess." With that, Finn went up to get dressed before he quickly headed out.

...

It didn't take long to find Flame Princess as she simply stood around next to a pond. For some reason.

"Princess, I've got something to confess." Finn started.

Flame Princess tilted her head, giving Finn a quizzical look. "What is it Finn?"

"About yesterday, when I said the Ice King was making fun of you. I, uh...I lied."

Flame Princess looked confused. "What?"

"I lied because...I just really wanted to see you two fight again. I had this dream and it was because of that fight you had. It was weird, but I also liked it. But it was important because the Cosmic Owl was..." Finn could see that he was starting to lose her. Truthfully, it's not like the Cosmic Owl really mattered here. Deep down, he knew he was just going to use it as an excuse to keep doing this before his conscience came in clutch. "The point is, I shouldn't have tricked you like that. I was being selfish. I'm sorry."

It took a moment for all of this to sink in for Flame Princess. Once it did, she put on a hurt expression. "So you lied to me."

Finn gave her an apologetic look. "I know and I'm so sorry about that. It won't ever happen again. I promise."

A lot of mixed emotions crossed Flame Princess' face as she thought about how to respond. "I'm...glad you apologised but...I need some time alone." Flame Princess turned to walk away. However, she paused to add one more thing. "At least for now."

Once Flame Princess was out of sight, Finn found himself staring down at his hands. Did he fix things? He might've stopped before things got really bad but in the end, he still hurt her. And what about the Cosmic Owl dream? Did anything he did even matter?

"Did I...blow it?"
