Work Text:

Does fate exist?

That’s a question Obanai had caught himself thinking about quite often since he had met Mitsuri.

Since that day, he had begun to believe in fate.

Fate can be good or bad… it’s something you can’t change no matter how hard you try.

Now here’s another thing he kept thinking about.

Was there a life before this one?

Obanai had also begun to think there was… he kept having dreams of Mitsuri dying in his arms.

She talked about the next life and being reborn…

“Obi!!” Mitsuri said cheerfully, walking into the room.

She was wearing a Santa hat and holding a box of decorations.

“Are you ready to decorate for the Christmas gift exchange?” she asked, placing the box down.

“Yea… yea, I am,” Obanai said, slowly walking over.

Obanai had been courting Mitsuri for a while now, and finally he was ready to marry her.

“Ok, let’s get to decorating!” Mitsuri said, placing some ornaments on the tree.

Obanai helped her.

They worked in a comfortable silence, and soon Obanai was zoning out.

He heard that familiar memory resurfacing.

It was a memory, but it didn’t feel like it belonged to him—like it wasn’t his to keep; it was borrowed.

“Iguro-san…” he heard Mitsuri say weakly.

But it wasn’t her… well, it was, but not his Mitsuri from this lifetime.

“Iguro-san, please, if we are ever born again as humans, will you make me your wife?”

The first time Obanai had this memory go through his head, he started crying, and poor Giyuu had to calm him down since he was on a mission with him.

Ever since then, he just kept seeing it.

Maybe this was that next life… maybe that’s why they are going to get married.

It was all fate…

Obanai snapped back to reality, dropped to one knee, and pulled the ring box out.

“Mitsuri… I promise in this life I’ll protect you. Will you marry me?” he asked, his voice shaking from excitement.

Mitsuri’s eyes filled with tears. “Yes!” she said, embracing him tightly.

Obanai stared at his now fiancée, his face filled with joy and pure love. “I love you… I love you so much, my words can barely describe it,” he said.

“And I love you just as much,” Mitsuri said softly.

“Hey, I hate to interrupt, but could I borrow Obanai really quick?” Muichiro said from the doorway.

“Oh, of course, sweetie,” Mitsuri said, pushing Obanai toward the door.

The two walked down the hall.

“So what do you need, kid?” Obanai asked gently.

“I want to court someone,” Muichiro said, staring at something—or rather, someone—across the room.

End.

For real this time.
