Work Text:

What is the rotation that final-year medical students hate the most? Undoubtedly, it’s the emergency medicine rotation, and you can understand why just by spending 10 minutes here.

It was 3:30 AM when a group of men, covered in injuries, arrived at the emergency department, forcing me to return to the field when I could have been taking a break.

Damn it, someone who had just performed a rectal examination had every right to rest, but I couldn’t even deserve that.

I angrily put my coat back on and took my place next to the patient on the stretcher, which our professor had pointed to, amidst the nurses running around.

When our eyes met, the patient, whom I knew quite well gave me a polite smile as if there were no wounds on his face.

Clearing my throat, I mumbled to the nurses watching without letting anything show.
"Sir, what is your name?"

Then, using my pen, illuminated by the light behind its, I carefully examined his eyes and the wound on his forehead, which I already knew by heart.

“Hwang Hyunjin,” he mumbled, then added:

“What is your name, doctor?”

Without breaking eye contact, I muttered, trying to seem uninterested.

“Beomgyu.”

“Your name is very beautiful, just like you.”

My cheeks started burning, and I turned to the nurse who was looking at us with a confused expression, all seriousness.

“Nurse Yeji, could you please bring the dressing materials?” The nurse nodded and walked away, leaving us alone for a few minutes.

"Oh God, are you in another fight, Hyunjin?" I muttered angrily, while checking if anyone else was around.

“If I have to fight to see you, I’ll fight every day.”

“You’re such an idiot.”

As soon as I finished my words, the dressing materials reached me. Quickly putting on gloves, I turned to Hyunjin with the antiseptic I had dropped on the cotton ball.

I was already angry with him for the fight, and I had asked him to give me some space for a while. But he was the type of person who would even come to my hospital as a patient!

As soon as I pressed the cotton to his wound, he acted like it hurt a lot and tried to flirt with me.

"Ah, doctor, it really hurts, please hold my hand."

Nurse Yeji was staring at me in shock.

"Sir, please stop. Doctor Beomgyu, should I continue?"

Just as I was about to tell the nurse to continue so she wouldn’t get more suspicious, Hyunjin subtly brushed his fingers against mine, making me stop. When our eyes met, he was looking at me so beautifully that even though I was angry, I couldn’t leave.

“No, you can go to the other doctors. I’ll take care of this patient, don’t worry.”

The nurse left, and I sighed before continuing my work.

Hyunjin’s gaze never left me, and it was hard to stay angry.

Unintentionally, my free hand which was meant to keep his head still, slid from his chin to his cheek and before I realized it, I was gently caressing his cheek. I couldn’t help it, I was in love. Even though I was angry, I was still in love!

“I’m sorry, Beomgyu, I won’t be jealous anymore, please.”

“We could have talked about this at home. Was there really a need for you to get into a fight and come to the emergency room and scare me?”

“I’m sorry… It escalated a bit dramatically, you’re right.”

Sighing, I put a small bandage on his wound and after gently caressing his cheek one last time, I pulled back a bit.

“I’ll see you tonight…” I mumbled, but seeing that he was still upset, I added, “…at our home. Don’t forget to make me a nice dinner.”

His smile widened instantly. As his long hair covered his face, I couldn’t resist and slowly tucked it behind his ear. I wanted to see his beautiful face completely.

“Okay, I’ll make your favorite meal. I’ll come pick you up after your shift, I love you.”

For a moment, as a habit, he leaned in to kiss me but neither of us noticed the nurse approaching.

As soon as we did, I tried to push him away with my hands, and Hyunjin managed to come up with the most sensible sentence he could.

“So, this is how artificial respiration works. Thank you so much for the information, Doctor Beomgyu!”
