Work Text:
The Port Mafia is odd, Dazai chooses not to think much about it though. But, basically everyone is either a gun nut, assassin, murder, or just plane crazy.
Most people go on vacation in the summer, but the port mafia executives tend to go around wintertime when things get slower before loads of work get piled onto them.
Executives don't go on normal vacations though as any person with a functioning frontal lobe could figure out.
Every season the executives all pitch in and rent a mansion for a week in some random location, unfortunatelyif they stray for too long things might start to fall apart. Usually the area rented is in the woods. This time around it was somewhere in Canada.
Everyone had to come together and discussed what mansion was rented so that nobody got killed and personal space was respected to some degree. It had to be huge to fit all of them. It's not like money between so many executives was a problem, especially when the boss himself went along on these trips.
Now comes the strange part. The executives play a lot of weird games as a collective… Most of them involve shooting or stealth to some capacity along with alot of gambling and drinking. Here's the weirdest one. On the second to last night everyone gears up in warm clothing and venture outside into the woods for a massive game of Lazer Tag.
Thinking back to himself the brunette realizes how ridiculous it must sound to normal people but it's a tradition of the Port that everyone finds amusing. The winner every year gets to claim a pretty decent prize pot and a ton of bragging rights, plus for the past few years he's heard that they've started playing with really cool industrial grade stuff a recently deceased executive made.
The rules were simple: it was every man for himself and the last person tagged won. If there were multiple people left by midnight the prize was split. One you got tagged you made your way to the fire pit outside the house, once the second to last person made it back everyone would fire around into the air to let the last person left know they had won.
This would be Dazai's first year participating as he had just been promoted into the executive position so now he was finally allowed to play. Though that meant Chuuya wasn't allowed to come along at first the rules won't change for one man after all. But of course that slimy doctor invited him to come with as Dazai's plus one- not that others had that option, but he knew why the ginger was allowed to come. Mori still didn't trust him fully and needed a close eye on him if he decided to use his ability aginst them. But Dazai didnt think that way, he would have been fine leaving the slug to guard the port while they took a break he wasn't stupid enough to try anything against the Mafia.
Either way he was psyched to play. Not even for the money but just because it but just because it seemed fun and he would get to brag to all the older executivesabout his victory. As everyone was about to make there way outside Mori made sure that everyone knew how the equipment worked and where to keep the markers so the game would be fair.
Mori made sure everyone set a ten minutes timer on their phones so they'd know when to begin. Then without warning he turned and sprinted off into the woods like he was running a track race. Everyone quickly followed suite running in all directions.
Dazai took note that most people had run uphill so he figured going downhill would give him a better shot at lasting longer.
It was dark but the snow on the ground made things pretty visible, exposing footsteps for others to follow. The brunette didn't care much to remember how many of them there where playing but it was a lot sence everyone was playing this year.
After venturing deep into the forest he found a little perch where he could see decently far up the hill so he figured he'd wait and catch his breath, he wasn't the most physically active person out there as most could tell just by looking at him without his coat.
He sat quietly for a decent while trying to think of what to do. The brunette figured if he kept walking adjacent to the slope he could eventually work his was upwards and potentially flank whoever was still up there so that's what he did.
Dazai feels as through he must have walked along the slope to the left for fifteen minutes straight putting as much distance between himself and the house as possible. Time really wasn't an issue as there were still about two hours until midnight.
He huffed as he walked up the slope in warm but restricting clothing. Just then he picked up on a very faint crunching sound over his left shoulder in the direction facing opposite the mansion the executives were staying at.
He slipped behind the nearest tree praying whoever it was couldn't get a clean shot off. After a few seconds chocolate eyes glanced in the direction of the sound but didn't see anything, but then after straining his eyes he saw it… a faint almost unnoticeable trail of footprints way off into the distance. They led to a thick tree farther behind him. There was someone standing behind that tree the brunette was sure of it.
It suddenly hits him, why hadn't they just tagged him? He was clearly out in the open oblivious to their presence and they were clearly trying to sneak up on him. Quickly, he started to sprint up the hill hopping to get out of range before they could get a shot off he wanted to win this game.
Just as he was about to continue back to the right towards the mansion he noticed something, further off to the left was another set of footprints. This one was weird though… it started from deeper in the woods and came towards him and looped back into the forest.
Had someone been outflanking even him? They would have had to walk further into the woods than he had which his mind found pretty hard to belive.
Before he could conjurup something he heard a noise from the slope he had just run up, it sounded like a person falling into the snow. He continued running back toward the house as cold hands pulled out his phone. It was past eleven. He couldn't even belive and hour had already gone by.
Keeping pace with himself he stumbled upon a path of footprints heading towards the house. They looked fresh so he picked up the speed hoping to catch someone off guard.
Passing a line of trees he saw Hirotsu walking at a steady pace Lazer gun in hand, swiftly he crouched and pulled out his pistol firing a precise shot directly hitting his marker.
A loud beeping noise started as it was blinking to signal that the old man was eliminated. He huffed but didn't seem to bumbed about the loss continuing on his was towards the house. A toothy smile spread across his face, thrilled to have actually gotten a kill.
High on adrenaline he decided to hatch a plan to get the jump on whoever was stalking him. He not so gracefully sprinted ahead for another minute then doubled back until he could safely jump behind a tree without leaving an obvious trail.
It was flawless, there's no way anyone following could know he was hiding there. As he waited his blinker suddenly started going off along with the annoying beeping. He was pissed, the beam was coming from where he had just been it was definitely whoever was watching him.
The brunette stood up expecting whoever had just shot him to turn there Lazer off. They didn't though. The beam stayed trained on him which started to test his nerves. It felt like they where taunting him. Dazai does not like being looked down on.
He wanted to know who had been behind him that whole time so he started to step trough snow in the direction of the beam. They never stopped shining the Lazer as he approached them. All the brunette could see were their hands the rest of their body was standing behind a tree.
Just then he picked up on the sound of gunshots sounding off behind him almost making his flinch. He froze, impossible… He must have won, Hirotsu must have been the final kill, but then who killed him?
He kept staring at the thin beam of light that was still pointing right at his equipment, then the person holding the Lazer gun stepped out from behind the tree. It was a stranger even worse there were two of them standing side by side, tall and muscular even with the coats they wore.
Just then a crunching sound was behind him. He wiped his head around to see a man much larger then himself- like a few feet larger and bulky wearing a ski mask holding a trash bad in one hand and a knife in the other.
The large man noticed him staring and started to sprint towards him. Without a second through he ran. Ditching the gear and screaming at the top of his lungs for the life of him. He wasn't screaming becuse he was scared of getting killed, he was yelling to attract attention and alert the other executives something was wrong.
He could hear all three of them chasing him yelling things he didn't think where Japanese, English or French. Zipping past the trees he sprinted as fast as he could through the snow praying to Ahrabaki he didn't trip. They were gaining on him.
He didn't want to turn around but he knew they were almost withing arms reach. Finally, lights from the mansion shined through the distance, he kept screaming and running feeling his legs starting to give out.
He was so close to the clearing, that's when he saw Mori sprinting towards him, hunting rifle in hand. He aimed above his head and fired three shots into the air. He heard whoever it was trip before running back into the woods.
He collapsed at Mori’s feet desperate for air. He passed out right there in the snow from exhaustion.
The next morning was rough. One of the executives that Dazai didn't care to learn the name of explained that she had tripped at one point during the game and later realized she had dropped her Lazer gun which explained how the guys in the woods had one.
Hirotsu hadn't tagged any of the executives before Dazai found him which explains why he was so nonchalant about getting out. The brunette also thinks it must be tiring for him getting up there in age and all… But he was the last kill.
Hirotsu and a lower status executive went out into the woods with their guns but couldn't find a thing. They tried following the footprints but there were so many branching paths and dead ends they eventually gave up. That whole day was a blur. Kouyou contacted the owners of the house and reported everything to the police.
The next morning he was startled by yelling coming from downstairs, Chuuya was losing it yelling at the top of his lungs towards the woods. He ran down to see a single snowman facing the house, in its hand was the Lazer gun that had been dropped the day before.
Chuuya fired a few rounds into the snowman's head using his ability before shouting some more threats and storming inside.
After that night and the morning after nothing has happened since then which had led to the collective conclusion that it wasn't threat to the mafia, just some sicko's trying to do god knows what. But that didn't stop everyone from being on guard incase of another assassination attempt.
