Work Text:

After yet another difficult court meeting that Maat hade to duck through, and another bitter night filled with waves of bristle memories dampened down with liquor that she swore tasted too much like cheap cherry brandy, Maat, as always, came back home to her boyfriend sleeping peacefully in their room. He was completely submerged in the various layers of their bedding, his nose poking the soft golden material of his pillow.

The sight would've made her smile, if she wasn't too sluggish to even attempt it. Though, as relaxed as Thoth looked, he immediately sensed her arrival, stirring softly in his sleep.

Maat moved closer to the bed, trying to soothe him; “Shh,” she whispered, her warm breath mingling with his.

“Go back to bed, its just me.” Thoth didn't respond, just turned back on his stomach and nuzzled his face against the smooth velvet.

Maat couldn't resist pressing a soft smooch on the crown of his head. If she could've seen his face, it'd probably be red and grinning. She saved that thought for later, though. She quietly slipped under the covers, facing her lover once more.

It was almost like he could sense her gaze on him, how he instantly turned around to face her. Well, he wasn't quite looking at her, since he was asleep, but Maat could almost see the gleam in his eyes, the slight crinkles underneath when he smiled. She slowly reached out, running her fingers through his now-let down hair. It was silky, and it pooled around him like a river of light, a molten halo of tenderness and care that only he could claim to be his.

Her hand fell along the strands, like a boat stranded, and eventually fell on his pale cheek, stroking the plane flesh. Shed touched him like that so many times before, the texture was almost engraved in her memory. Thoth cracked one eye open, gazing up at her through dense lashes.

The moment their gazes met, Maat pulled him tightly in a fond embrace. Thoth let out a small eek of surprise, but quickly melted in her arms, wrapping his around her neck in return. She sighed softly, leaving a small peck on his forehead. They stayed like that for a while; limbs tangled together in an intimate dance. Tomorrow was another day that would bring new challenged, but for now, they rest together undisturbed.
