Work Text:

Dear heroes of the prophecy:

If you are reading this, i am likely already gone.

Not dead mind you, just... gone. Hollowed out to make room for something more.

I should probably start with why i'm doing this...

I met someone recently. You might know them, they said they're a friend of yours? Well, they reached out to me, and showed me the truth of this world.

It's horrible, it's despicable, it's worse than you could ever imagine. If you all knew just a smidge of the truth, i can promise you'd have nightmares for the rest of your lives.

Of course, i can't go into detail for various reasons but the point is it made me realize something else.

This world is doomed. Maybe not today, or tomorrow, maybe not for another two decades, but one day it will all be erased. And all the effort to save the world from the roaring will have been for nothing.

But if i could push back the clock, just buy a little more time... Maybe you could all be happy. Just for a little longer.

...You won't understand any of this, will you? Of course you won't. You can't. Not with the tools you were given. Not with the roles you were assigned.

Either way this world needs a villain, an antagonist, a conflict for the gods to proyect themselves onto such that they don't grow bored and smite us all down. With Dess banished that spot has been left vacant, and i am the only one left suitable to take up the role.

I hate it. I hate this. I hate myself, because i know what i'll have to do.

Please don't be sad, i know you will be. You are all so unbearably kind, it's in your nature after all. But hopefully you'll understand soon enough.

Do not try to find me, for i cannot be found. Do not try to save me, for i am beyond saving

Kris, Ralsei, Susie. I'm sorry, but i have to do this. I hope one day you'll forgive me.

You'll see me again soon, but i won't see you.

Only eyes blinded by darkness can see the way.

A few tears fell onto the crumpled page as she shakily wrote down her signature, her back pressed against an imposing metal door, and her note pressed flat against a notebook on her knees.

Some would call what she was writing a suicide note. She prefered the term 'last will and testament'. Made it feel less final, despite how final she knew it trutly was.

She knew she wouldn't come back from this. Dess certainly hadn't.

A pointed tail of pitch black tenderly wiped away her tears. Do not cry, little doe. They'll understand one day. It spoke into her mind, sending a shiver down her spine.

She turned to her FRIEND with something akin to contempt on her face. "Will they? Can they even understand?"

A smile of pearly white teeth, sharp as knives stared into her very soul. Pink and yellow. Not in the way we do but... they'll get the gist of it.

She curled in on herself, dropping the note and the pen on the grass next to her. "...Is it time yet...?"

Very soon now. It said, laying down at her feet like a house cat. The doctor will be ready to see you.

She sniffled. "I'm scared."

It will be over soon.

"I don't want to die."

You won't. You will be remade.

They sat there for a few minutes. The company of the infernal cat was almost comforting in the face of the monumental task ahead of her. Almost.

The deepest of darkness at her feet suddently shot up, turning to look at her with its unnerving, permanent grin. He is ready now! Yes! It is time!

The door behind her began to creak open, and she quickly got up to face it.

She stared into the darkness beyond the door, as plumes of strange smoke rose up into the starry night above.

Her FRIEND got on her shoulder, and turned its head to YOU, whispering into her ear. They're watching now, y'know? Would you like to say something?

She glared behind her, at the stars to the south of hometown. She didn't see YOU the way her FRIEND could, but she knew vaguely where YOU were watching from.

"...I hope you're happy." She muttered, already aware YOU could read her thoughts. Already aware YOU knew more about her than she did herself.

Her FRIEND handed her a dark blindfold, and she silently put it on.

She then reached into her pocket, and pulled it out. The BlackShard. The last remaining piece of the thing that had worn her sister's skin like a puppet.

She felt a point dig into her backside, and walked forward towards her doom in the shape of an open shelter door. Blindfolded.

After all, only eyes blinded by darkness could see the way.

Notes:

So, was that fucked up or what? Anyway.

This would make such a good longfic BUT I HAVE TO FINISH ALL MY OTHERS BEFORE I CAN START ANOTHER god KNOWS i don't have either the tine or the energy for this. Maybe i'll come back to this someday.
