I Won't Forget You

Summary:

Juggling part-time jobs and art commissions living with her brother Levi, Kenzie lives life like she always has. slowly and with great difficulty.

in 2019, the world changes, as news outlets and social medias report stone-covered sparrows being found by the public.
this intrigues her, of course, and the question is left in the air; what could this mean?

but she'll have to save the questions for later, as her one and only person she can rely on is suddenly taken from her.

Before the world has a chance to figure out the cause of the sparrow situation, a mysterious green light engulfs the surface of the planet, and all is petrified for seemingly no reason.

by the time Kenzie is awoken from her 3,719 years alone in stone, she comes to the realization that everything will be different from now on, and she'll have to deal with it, with or without her brother by her side.

Notes:

this is my (kinda) first fic, so I'm sorry if the writing is bad!! ._.
this is actually a rewrite of an old fic I had a plan for, but I decided to rethink it and change it up a bit!! :D

Chapter 1: Petrified sparrows? Sounds like a prank.

Chapter Text

Kenzie laid on the side of her bed, phone in hand, scrolling Instagram and other social media, spending her night doomscrolling and procrastinating the work she had to do later today.

As she was scrolling mindlessly, something caught her eye, which was a post about a recent oddity around the world,
swallows found covered in stone for seemingly no reason.

Her eyes cocked, and Kenzie sat up from her bed, looking closer at the image and the comment section.

“Surely this couldn't be real, right? Just a prank being played or something..” She muttered to herself,

The comments, though, proved her statement false, as hundreds of people apparently saw the same thing.

Kenzie searched up the topic, hoping to find related articles or news, and found a couple other posts about it, all sharing the same curiosity she was feeling at that moment.

“It’s so odd, I wonder if this is some weird disease going around or something. Why is it only sparrows?” she thought, kicking her legs idly off the side of her bed, now invested in this mystery.

A knock interrupted Kenzie’s train of thought as Levi’s voice carried through the door.

“Kenz, I made dinner if you want some, it's out on the table!”

“I’ll be there in a minute!” she said back, her eyes lingering on the post for a second longer before she put it in her pocket.

She’d look at more info on it later.

Kenzie sat at the dimly lit dinner table, and looked at the food Levi had made, spaghetti. It was simple, but it was both of their favorites.

It smelled amazing, made perfectly like he did it every time. She never knew how to make it how he did, even after he taught her multiple times before.

As she settled down into her seat, Kenzie’s stomach growled a little, as she had forgotten to eat breakfast again this morning.

Levi sat across the table, serving his own portion of food, and smiled lightly before looking at Kenzie curiously and clearing his throat.

“Have you seen what’s been happening all over with those birds?” He asked.

Kenzie was a little surprised he had seen the news at the same time as she had, and rushed to answer.

“Yes, I have! What do you think of it? It's so odd to me.”

Levi set his fork down and leaned forward, engaging fully in the topic. “I honestly have no clue; I just learned about it yesterday and thought it was out of a dream or something!”

Kenzie ate as she listened, and replied with intrigue, hoping to share her views and hypotheses.

“I just heard about it around an hour ago, so I haven't had much time to think about it, but I can’t help but wonder if it’s some kind of disease that only affects sparrows-I mean, swallows? I mean, I’m not sure any other animal has been affected by this, right?”

“I think so. It definitely could be a disease or something, I guess we’ll have to see if anything changes in the news.”

Kenzie nodded, her head now filled with ideas as to what this mystery could be about. Maybe she’d never know, but brainstorming about it gave her some food for thought.
