Work Text:
“Eva… where are we going?” Damon’s hoarse throat made her name ring throughout the dark hall like a desperate plea, begging for an answer he knew he would not get.
The girl heard him loud and clear.
Yet she did not answer.
She kept pulling at his hand, leading him to a promise he knew would never come.
“Eva… please…” the blonde sounded tired, helpless, vulnerable. He refused to walk another step, halting them both. The girl didn’t dare look back, fearing that if she did she would see his eyes glossy with exhausted tears. She knew the sight would only soften her heart, crumble what little composure she had left.
This was not the time to show weakness; they have sacrificed too much to give up now.
With a hard tug, she attempted to keep him moving forward, clutching onto his arm with a grip so tight it was as if she feared he would leave her if he had the chance.
“Home, Damon..!” she barked weakly, the rasp of her voice echoing solemnly as she tried to convince him to continue dragging their tired feet across the checkered tiles, “we are going home…”
The boy was not convinced.
“We’ve been walking for hours… there is nothing, Eva!” he cried out, his voice shaky, “Nothing…”
Frustrated at his obstinance, Eva finally turned to look at him, meeting the boy’s frantic green eyes. He looked like a mad man, on the cusp of a full psychotic meltdown.
The blonde began his demented spiral, “Tozu lied to us. There is no exit beyond this hallway.”
“They all died for nothing.”
“I realize it now.”
“This is our punishment.”
Unable to entertain his crazed ramblings any longer, Eva silenced him.
“SHUT UP!”
The volume of her voice effectively achieved her goal with Damon cowering in fear at the angered look she shot him.
“I did all of the work to get us here, the least you can do is just be quiet and let me save us.”
She pulled again, gently at first. Feeling rather guilty she had yelled at him when he already looked so destroyed.
“Move Damon.”
Her patience was beginning to thin. He averted his gaze, and though he hadn’t said anything, she took it as him finding the sight of her repulsive.
“I SAID MOVE!”
She screamed again and, with a violent tug, succeeded in convincing him to continue stumbling after her. She returned her gaze forward, refusing to see the look on his face after she had treated him so harshly.
She didn’t want them to end up this way. But this was what she had to do for them to survive.
She’s only doing this because truly, from the bottom of her heart.
She loved him, loved him more than she had ever loved another in her whole life.
“I’m sorry… but this is the only way. You’ll thank me when we get out. I promise.”
With no more energy left to protest, he followed her mindlessly. Unable to think nor even feel any longer, he could do nothing but let himself be pulled forward like an animal on a leash.
It was only the two of them now.
They will have to make do.
