Chapter Text

Lucifer was already awake and dressed. His early morning routine now included diaper changing. That task accomplished, he picked up Rory. "Shall we turn the lights on now Spawn?" She looked at him with wide blue eyes. "Still no words hmm? I'll take that as a yes anyway."

His life had changed immeasurably in the last few years but he was he happiest he had ever been. Never a fan of Christmas in the past, he had agreed to go along with all of Chloe's traditions for their little one's first festive season. He flicked the switch by the tree lighting it up. Rory was newly amazed by the fairy lights every morning.

She reached out for a bright pink bell and giggled when he made it tinkle for her. The urchin had packed the tree with every garish ornament she could find. She had spent the night with her grandmother and they would both be here later for dinner as well as the doctor and her spawn. "Let's see if mummy is awake yet."

Chloe yawned and stretched, opening her eyes to see Lucifer lounging against the door frame with Rory in his arms. "Merry Christmas darling." He sat on the bed beside her. "You really wanted to roll your eyes then, didn't you?"
"Possibly."
"Thanks for doing this."
"You're very welcome," he said, leaning over to kiss her good morning.

"Hello Sweetie," Chloe said, pushing herself up in the bed and taking Rory. She held out her pinky for the baby to grip. "Mommy loves you," she said, kissing the tiny hand. "Nothing to say this morning," said Lucifer. "I told you, seven months is too young for her to start talking."

"I wish I could be certain of what she desires, that's all." Chloe kissed his stubbled cheek. "Just keep talking to her, that's how she learns. Babies have very limited desires anyway." He smoothed down her soft dark hair. "For now we make our best guess from her expressions. You know the look she gets when she's about to poop don't you?" He raised his eyebrows. "Oh yes, we're familiar with that one aren't we Spawn?"

Rory tilted her head a little and Chloe couldn't help smiling. "She always looks so happy when you sing to her too."
"She has good taste, don't you little one?" Chloe leaned against him. "She's happy and healthy and she has a great dad." He huffed. "Who knew?"
"I did."

Chloe sighed. "I'd better get up, there's a lot to do before everyone gets here." Lucifer took his offspring back. "Take your time. Rory and I will get breakfast ready."

Lucifer was gathering omelette ingredients, Rory supervising from her playpen, the best one on the market obviously. He felt a disturbance in the air behind him and the unmistakeable sound of ruffling feathers. He spun around, alert to potential danger at once.
