Work Text:

Shadow didn't know what in the world he was doing when he invited the blue blur at the top of the hill yet here he was, with Sonic, ready to watch those fireworks bursting and crackling up in the sky like twinkling stars that ended up falling slowly down. Shadow sighed tiredly as he looked over and saw Sonic, his green eyes sparkling as he watched the fireworks in the sky, yet briefly, he’d look over at Shadow with a rather dorky expression.

That smile. The damn fucking smile.

He ended up being so moved by his smile that he’d absolutely slap him in the face so he could remember his face. Yet he said nothing until—

“Hey, shads! Mind if I want to tell you something?” Sonic happily asked, his tail wagging happily, he put his chin in his hands as he kicked his feet.

“Hmph, what, hedgehog?” Shadow snarled.

“Look..I know this has been a big, you know, weird ever since that whole fight we did…especially after my transition!”

Shadow felt his heart beating faster as he heard the blue fur’s laughter, something about that damn smile, and his laughter made his heart melt with unexpected joy. It made him want to kiss that stupid grin off of him yet he didn't want to be seen as an idiot who falls for his rival. Yet he sighed, he knew Sonic was right, after their whole fight—it had awakened something inside of Shadow. Was it respect? Maybe appreciation. Did he want to admit it? No.

“Look, I didn't expect you of all hedgehogs to be so… stupidly open towards me,” Shadow muttered under his breath. “Especially after that whole fight we had, do your parents realize about our relationship?”

“Huh? My dad, Donut lord? Yeah! I did,” Sonic smiled happily. “That's how I got these rocking scars! They were, well, confused at first considering it was a ‘Human’ norm then Maddie was able to get me the right doctor to do it since she wasn’t ‘skilled’ in it.”

Sonic lifted his baggy shirt, revealing his binder underneath it, he smiled weakly as he immediately hid it from the emo hedgehog. With a sigh and a soft sad smile, he looked out at the fireworks then looked over at Shadow once more.

“You get it, right, Shads?”

Shadow cocked an eyebrow. “Get what, Hedgehog?”

“That we have been together on and off for a while but then after that big fight, we just been together a lot more than usual. It made me wonder why until I found out that..”

“Don’t get the stupid idea twisted, Sonic, I’m not your type at all.”

“H-Huh!? Type? Then what are we, Shads, Best friends? If that’s the case, then why did you invite me here?”

“Obviously to tell you in person, don’t you get it?”

Sonic sat upright, his legs crossed while Shadow groaned tiredly, looking up to see red fireworks sparking in the sky before shaking his head. “I did something stupid, alright? I looked at what your favorite pastime is, fireworks shows practically every night, around seven thirty, your favorite hill spot being here, and… I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I brought you this chili dog.”

Shadow handed the chili dog to the blue fur. “Yet, I’m saying that I cannot be your type, either romantic or a friend, because I’m not sure if I’ll mess up and lose you. Yet..”

Sonic noticed Shadow hesitating to continue or to run off and leave him here but with a soft smile, he moved closer to him and wrapped his arms around him, practically cutting him off from further self-deprecation. Shadow felt his heart beating faster. “What are you doing...?”

“Shads, I know that you think that you’re ‘trash’ at being nice but,” Sonic looked over at the hedgehog with a cheerful grin. “You’re doing really well so far and I think you’re getting the hang of it!”

Shadow scoffed before a slight grin appeared on his face. “You’re still so naive, Hedgehog but I’ll try to handle it.”

“Hey, you’re stuck with me, Shads. So, why not make it the best time ever?”
