Christmas Begins with a Meow

Summary:

At midnight on the 24th, when loneliness feels heaviest, a soaked little kitten appears as if it chose Ben.

Mike lifts it gently and murmurs, “I think it came looking for us,” and for the first time in days, Ben smiles.

Work Text:

Snow fell softly, as if the whole world had decided to speak in whispers.

Christmas lights blinked in the window, but Ben wasn’t looking at them.

He sat on the couch, wrapped in an oversized blanket, listening to the ticking clock strike midnight on December 24th.

The house was quiet.

Too quiet.

Mike was in the kitchen, pretending to fix something that didn’t need fixing.

They both knew it wasn’t hunger keeping him busy, but the same feeling tightening in Ben’s chest—the kind of loneliness that shows up even when you aren’t alone.

Ben closed his eyes.

The days had been hard. Long.

Days where smiling felt like too much work.

Then he heard it.

A small sound.

Weak.

A meow.

Ben frowned, thinking his mind might be playing tricks on him.

But the sound came again, followed by a soft tap at the door.

—Mike…? —he called quietly.

Mike appeared in the doorway.

—Did you hear that?

The meow came again, more insistent this time.

Mike didn’t answer.

He walked to the front door and opened it slowly.

Cold air rushed in, carrying snowflakes… and a tiny, trembling shape.

A kitten.

Small. Soaked. White with black patches, snow clinging to its fur as if winter had claimed it for itself.

The kitten lifted its head and meowed again—tired, but determined.

—Oh… —Mike whispered, kneeling immediately.

Ben stood up without thinking, moving closer as if afraid the moment might break.

—He’s… he’s freezing —Ben said.

Mike scooped the kitten up carefully, wrapping it in the sleeve of his sweater.

The little animal didn’t fight.

Instead, it curled against his chest, like it had been waiting for exactly this.

—I think —Mike said softly, looking down at the kitten— it came looking for us.

Ben’s throat tightened.

They closed the door, leaving the cold outside.

Mike carried the kitten into the living room and placed it on Ben’s blanket.

The shaking eased, replaced by a faint purr.

Ben sat beside it, reaching out carefully.

—Hey… —he murmured—. You’re safe now.

The kitten opened wide, shining eyes and touched Ben’s finger with its tiny paw.

The purring grew louder, filling the room.

Something in Ben’s chest loosened.

Mike returned with a warm towel and a mug of hot chocolate.

He dried the kitten gently while Ben held the blanket steady.

—I didn’t really have plans for tonight —Mike said, trying to sound casual—. But I think… this is better.

Ben looked up. Mike smiled—not a big one, just the kind that says I’m here.

The kitten, now warmer, decided Ben was its favorite place and settled on his chest.

The purr was steady and deep, like a tiny engine.

Ben laughed softly.

His first laugh in days.

—I guess Christmas… —he said, voice a little rough— started with a meow.

Mike sat beside him, resting his shoulder against Ben’s.

—And snow. And a stubborn little kitten.

The clock read twelve-oh-five.

Snow continued to fall outside, but inside the house there was warmth.

Light.

Life.

Ben looked down at the small sleeping body trusting him completely.

And he smiled.

Truly smiled.

For the first time in days.
