Breanna looked through the boxes of stuff that Hardison had left behind previously. She needed to find the one that had the Hanukkah supplies. She knew that he had left it when he had first bought the theater. Had seen it when she was running her security through the building after he left.
So she knew it was there, just not where it had gotten moved to.
She moved aside another box and spotted it. She knew it had to be in that closet. It was where all of Hardison's things had ended up, at least the ones that didn't have another better spot somewhere. She pulled it out and set it to the side, making one last check of it to see if there were any other boxes. She didn't see any and so she put everything else back and took her prize back to the main room.
Sophie and Harry were sitting at the main table, doing something on the screens, but it didn't seem like anything had gotten messed up by them, so Breanna left them to it. There was no reason to get distracted from her mission of getting set up for the first night, which she really wanted to get done while she was sure she had the chance. There was no telling what would happen as the day went on. It was so rare that she had the chance to celebrate festival days on the actual day.
She opened the box and started setting things out on the bar. All the small things that Hardison had collected over the years were in it. He wasn't one to have a lot of decorations for any holiday, so there wasn't very much. The hanukkiah that he had gotten back before he had left Nana's was the main thing she was after. It was one of the things that she had been happy to get from him.
It was there and her heart hurt a little opening it. It almost felt wrong to be unwrapping Hardison's hanukkiah while he wasn't there. But she wasn't going to be able to get another one in time. She had only just barely managed to get candles in time for the first night with the craziness that was their schedules.
"Oh is it first night already?" Sophie asked. "Time must have gotten away from me again."
When Breanna looked back up Sophie had turned from the screen to watch what she was doing. She had a look of fondness on her face that Breanna loved. It made her really feel like family.
"It is," Breanna said. "I only managed to get candles so I pulled out Hardison's box for the rest of it."
"I thought I recognized that menorah," Sophie replied. "Though it has been a while since I have seen it."
"That's for Hanukkah right?" Harry asked.
"It is," Sophie said. "It gets lit every night for the duration."
"It's one of my favorite parts," Breanna said. "Watching the candles burn brings back a lot of good memories for me. We used to sit and play dreidel until the candles went out."
It had always been one of her favorite times. All of the kids in the house, whether or not they were Jewish would come and play with her and Hardison, and sometimes even Nana would play. It was something that she missed, having others around that would celebrate with her. But it seemed like she might have a few new people to do activities with.
"We had to stop that once Parker realized that if she won, she got the most chocolate," Sophie said. "It ended with a lot of cheating."
Breanna laughed.
"She wasn't allowed to play when visiting unless we were playing with anything other than gelt," Breanna said. "Mainly when it was the erasers."
"When exactly are you supposed to light it?" Harry asked.
"At sundown," Breanna said.
"Which is in about twenty minutes," Sophie added. "Which means if you want to do anything else you should get it done."
"I wasn't planning on it," Breanna said. "I just wanted to light candles."
"Well then, let's get a proper set up for it then."
Sophie had a very different idea of a proper set up than Breanna did it seemed. Breanna had grown up with the hanukkiah going wherever it was the least likely to burn anything. But Sophie was of the tradition that it had to be in the window and visible outside. Breanna was more than happy to let her put it there after they got a good fireproof surface for it to sit on. Harry helped though to Breanna it seemed like he was very lost in their arguments, but was just happy to be there.
So the normal for him.
But Breanna couldn't help but be happy that he stayed to help them. It was nice to have someone that wanted to participate and learn about their traditions. And to have another person there with her and Sophie.
They eventually finished, in time to light the candles, only a little bit late. She did it that night, knowing that it was likely that Sophie would the next as long as she was there.
Then the three of them sat at the close table and together she and Sophie taught Harry how to play dreidel. With the pretzels that were always around. It was fun getting to watch him go from not understanding to having a blast with them.
It was still a bit lonely not having Hardison there. He was her main person for celebrating all the holidays. But for the first time in a few years, she wasn't alone in her celebrating. She had others with her. And she couldn't wait to introduce Harry to more Hanukkah traditions. And the other holidays as well.
