Work Text:
The windows are curtained. The room's full of stillness,
and loneliness whispers from under the bed.
I'm tired, exhausted. My fear is dauntless,
though screaming for gods would've been wasteful instead.
Invisible creatures are watching from shadows,
impatiently waiting for my scheduled sleep.
They slide from the walls to the floor with no echo
and hiss with disdain at the light from the street.
I'd like to forget all the hype till the morning:
let sleep be my guest, take my mind from my plight.
The creatures of darkness won't let it be boring:
they take their time 'fore mess up my whole night.
They'll sit on my chest, suffocating and heavy,
they'll open it up, take my heart in their claws,
they'll eat it with gusto, they'll drink it with fervor,
at dawn they will leave me to deal with my loss.
I'm helpless to suffer this cruel nightly torture,
there's nowhere whence I can get any aid:
their talons will leave once again their notches,
my blood once again will be wasted in spades.
At noon they will spare me - full, satiated,
they'll rest in the shadows, these vassals of Hell.
I will be distracted and emancipated
from them till the darkness is back once again.
If you want to know what the heck are these creatures,
that come every night to mess up with my faith,
it is fairly easy to get the full picture
of what's going on if you know their names.
The name of the first one is Cruel Melancholy:
it's quiet and sad, it has no appetite
until it smells blood, hears my suffering calling -
it then takes a bite from my poor crumpled heart.
The second one's name sounds as "Love, Unrequited":
its torture is slow, it has nowhere to go,
it lets you to feel it, it's not gonna gut you -
it's just gonna busk in your pain and your woe.
The third creature is the most cruel of the legion,
its call sign's "The Hope that is Useless and Late":
it lets your insomnia show you its visions
of things that might be, that you won't ever have.
And all their friends - helpless loneliness, anger,
and hate, resignation and fear, and wrath -
bunch up in the corners and plan their sieges
to stage their assault when the daylight has passed.
I am their victim: my feelings, emotions,
impressions aren't going to leave me alone.
I curse their existence, I choke on their poison...
I'll mourn, if one day they are finally gone.
