Really, it’d been a desperate long shot, for Kyo to ask Tohru to move to heaven knows where, selfishly asking her to share her future with him, when they’d barely even been on their first date- there’s no way she’d let him tear her away from everything she knew and loved.
But he loved her, so agonizingly much. He wasn’t ready to let her go; he had to at least try.
He hadn’t even finished talking before she said yes; yes, she would go wherever he goes; yes, she wanted nothing more than to be by his side-
Yes, he could finally fulfill his promise to Kyoko, to always be there for Tohru, for the rest of his days.
It was those beautiful yeses, echoing in his head, as they had been the whole day, that occupied Kyo’s thoughts that night as he sat on the roof of Shigure’s house with Tohru. He and Tohru would hang out on the roof like this ever since he’d moved into Shigure’s house nearly 2 years ago, but ever since their romance had blossomed, the rooftop had become their place to be together, as a couple.
Heh, a couple, Kyo thought- he’d still had yet to get used to even that, especially given the curse…
And what his attempts to push Tohru away from the inevitable pain had caused…
“Kyo?” Tohru’s voice snapped him out of his thoughts.
“Yeah, Tohru?”
“Could I… ask you something? About what you said earlier?” Tohru asked bashfully, a rosy blush overtaking her face.
“...Yeah?”
“When you asked me to stay by your side… when you said you were going to protect me, your entire life… you were being serious, weren’t you?”
Kyo rapped his knuckles against the crown of Tohru’s head. “You dummy,” he teased, pulling her into a hug, “Why’d I ever wanna joke about something like that? Of course I’m serious about that.”
“That’s a good point.” Tohru giggled, before her blush deepened further and she hesitated, “So then… does that mean you want us to get married someday?”
“I’m so sorry, I know that’s a really weird thing to ask but that’s just kind of what it sounded like and I just wanted to make sure-”
“Yeah.” Kyo’s voice cut through her nervous rambling, “It’d be really nice if we… could…”
Wait.
What?!
Kyo turned away from Tohru and turned a vivid shade of red as his thoughts raced a mile a minute- did he really just blurt that out?! Asking her to move away with him after only 2 weeks of dating was already a huge ask, and now he lets it slip that he already wants to marry her?! She probably thinks he’s gone completely nuts, that damn dog was right, he is a goddamn pervert-
“Good. Because… I’d like that too.”
Tohru’s words brought his train of thought to a screeching halt. The two of them simply stared at each other in awed silence for a moment, faces still flushed.
“You’re… really okay with this? You don’t think it’s weird I asked you that?” Kyo eventually managed to choke out.
Tohru let out a warm giggle. “Of course not Kyo! I did say yes, didn’t I?” She turned away, her face hard to read at that moment; “Really, I was hoping that was what you meant all along. I just… didn’t want to get my hopes up.”
Kyo chuckled as his face settled into a bright smile. “Well, I’m happy I didn’t disappoint you then. We’re really gonna do this, huh?”
“Yep!”
The past few weeks had seen so many joyous upheavals in their lives; Kyo being released from the threat of confinement, the two of them admitting their love to each other, the breaking of the curse that stood in their way-
And now, as the pair held each other in their embrace, under the glistening starlight, they knew the life Kyo now got to live would be spent together, hand in hand.
