Chapter 1: Chapter 1

Chapter Text

Pacifica leaned against the counter, zoning out while watching as the morning sun glowed in through the dusty old windows at Greasy’s Diner. Her mind got hazy as she listened to the hum and chatter from the kitchen of the just opened diner.
“Pacifica!”
She jolted back to reality.
“Table six wants two coffees, one black, one with cream and sugar.” Lazy Susan said.
“What? Oh yeah, sorry Susan, I’m on it.” Pacifica replied.
She was tired and out of it, which wasn’t necessarily unusual for her early in the mornings, but she still scolded herself for not being focused while at work. She hadn’t gotten much sleep the night before because her parents had had some of their wealthy important friends over for a dinner that had lasted much later into the night than she would have liked to stay up with a morning shift the next day. She had only managed to sneak away once it had reached the point in the night when the formalities had long since vanished and they were all drunk enough that they wouldn’t notice that she was gone. Although Pacifica tried to spend as little time and association with her parents as possible, hence the job at Greasy’s Diner which she had applied for the second she turned fifteen, there were still rare occasions when they forced her to go to events so they could at least seem like a happy family to the public.
She poured the coffee and forced the tired look off of her face as she brought it over to table six.
“Here you go, two coffees, one black and one with cream and sugar” she said, smiling as she set the mugs down on the table.
The two customers thanked her and after they explained that they still needed more time to decide what they wanted to eat, Pacifica went back to her station at the register.
The next twenty minutes went on without much activity. She doodled on her notepad and poured herself a cup of coffee and had a muffin while waiting for the morning rush to begin. Finally, it did and she waved to friendly regulars as they entered and she took their orders. The morning was going smoothly until an unexpected group of people entered the diner. She was serving a plate of eggs and bacon and a plate of french toast to table nine when she saw the Pines family walk in.
Stan and Ford occasionally came to the diner, and were always friendly to her, but today much to her surprise, Dipper and Mabel were with them. The last time Stan and Ford had been there they had told her that the twins would be coming down to Gravity Falls this summer. She had been more excited than she would have liked to admit to see them because they hadn’t been back since the first time they visited, two summers ago.
When they had first met she was, admittedly, a total jerk to both Mabel and Dipper. But as the summer went on, they had gotten more friendly to each other and bonded to the point of being acquaintances at the least because of weirdmageddon and all of the other crazy stuff that had happened. She still wished that they had gotten to spend more time together because she felt like she hadn’t totally redeemed herself for how mean she was to them at the beginning. Some part of her was almost nervous to see them again, maybe that was why it caught her off guard when they walked in without her knowing that they would be arriving today. Nevertheless, it was a pleasant surprise.
She finished serving table nine and walked over to where the Pines family were sitting.
“Good morning, what can I get for you today?” she asked, trying to sound nonchalant, using her most practiced waitress voice.
In the split second before they looked up from their menus and realized who she was, Pacifica got a good look at the twins. She hadn’t thought people could change very much in appearance in a little under two years but Mabel’s braces were gone and her hair was shorter with streaks of pink and purple and Dipper was clearly much taller and was that a bicep she saw poking out of his t-shirt? Pacifica didn’t think she had changed much but maybe that's just what happens when you live in a small town like Gravity Falls.
“Oh my gosh, Pacifica!” Mabel exclaimed as her face lit up in excitement. “You didn’t tell us she worked here!” she said to Stan and Ford.
“Hey Pacifica! Long time no see.” Dipper said, his voice noticeably deeper but still with that dorky twinge it always had.
“Hi guys! Good to see you. Yeah, I started working here in March.” she said awkwardly, realizing that it must seem out of character for her, the daughter of the wealthiest family in town, to be working as a waitress at Greasy’s Diner. She took their orders and then she went back to bring them their food.
“Here you guys go. Enjoy.” she said politely as she placed stacks of pancakes on the table.
“Oooh these look delicious!” Stan said in awe, “way better than my stancakes”
Ford rolled his eyes at that, “Thank you, Pacifica.”
Mabel showed her agreement with a mouth full of food and Pacifica started to walk away.
“Pacifica wait,” Dipper said.
She turned around and caught a glint in his eye as he said, “see you around.”
She nodded and smiled as she turned back around and walked to the register. Maybe this summer wouldn’t be so boring after all.
