Chapter Text
She loved watching him with her.
Chloe thought seeing Lucifer with their newborn wouldn’t be much different than the warm, attentive way he interacted with Trixie. After all, Dan had been excited when Trixie was born, but he wasn’t what one would call ‘over the moon’. She was the one who held Trixie the most during their two-night stay as well as feeding and changing her, and she provided the vast majority of the care upon their return home. Dan went back to work a week after they got home, and she was only home for another five weeks before her return to work.
However, she’d never been loved by anyone as much as Lucifer loved her, and that adoration seemed to attach itself to their daughter the moment he first held her the day before, as hesitant as he’d been.
It turned out he had the capacity for more conscious, loving involvement than she could have begun to imagine. He was completely enamored by his little female facsimile. Chloe was able to sleep, shower, wander the halls, and eat unlike she had with Trixie because Lucifer never voiced a single complaint when she asked him to care for Aurora. He encouraged her to breastfeed when she expressed interest just after their daughter’s birth – she’d wanted to with Trixie, but it proved far too difficult to figure out given her work situation. Now, she was in a financial position where she could take all of the time she wanted to for time-intensive options like breastfeeding – she knew they were both off without pay for her for at least six months as agreed to with the chief two weeks prior, and she didn’t have to give a second thought about the ramifications of that.
She said he was already spoiling her, and he informed her a bit sharply that you couldn’t spoil a newborn as he entered hour four straight of holding her. He sang, he rocked, he monologued, and he regularly serenely and appreciatively looked at Chloe both when he thought she wasn’t looking and when he handed Aurora off to her to nurse. When Michael had come to visit early that morning before a surgery, he offhandedly mentioned how vibrant Lucifer’s soul had become, and she wished she could see what his twin saw.
Now, he was almost thrumming with excitement. They’d gotten the text from Ella that she planned to be there around lunchtime, and Lucifer kept looking at his watch as he sat in the rocking chair, Aurora asleep in the bassinette next to him. They’d FaceTimed within a couple of hours of Aurora’s birth the afternoon before, and Lucifer was so proud during the call that Ella later sent the Tribe chat a meme of an otter holding a newborn baby otter with the caption ‘I MADE THIS’.
- This is seriously what Lucifer looked like, guys. I mean, a more solid effort at holding her head up, but he was just shoving that baby at the camera.
There were footsteps in the hallway, and Lucifer looked up to Ella excitedly waving at him with both hands. He jumped up, and they met just inside the door with an expectedly epic hug. Ella moved past him to hug Chloe and retrieve sushi from the cooler bag hanging from her shoulder. Chloe was pretty certain the bag was from work but was too interested in the raw fish to care.
‘Is that her?’ Ella asked quietly and rhetorically as she skirted between Lucifer and the foot of the bed on her way to the bassinette. She looked down at Aurora, retrieved a bottle of hand sanitizer, and disinfected her hands. ‘Aw, guys!’
Lucifer walked up behind her, and Aurora started to stir at the sound of his return. She opened her mouth and scrunched her face but was unable to start fussing as Ella picked her up.
‘Hey, baby Morningstar,’ she said softly as she bounced her. ‘Look at you, looking just like your daddy. Your mama’s genes didn’t stand a chance, did they?’
Chloe slowly got out of bed and walked to them, lacing her arm in Lucifer’s and leaning against him for support. He turned enough to kiss the top of her head.
‘I’m seriously so happy,’ Ella said as she slowly turned toward them. ‘I mean, yes, part of it is because I’ve wanted you together since basically the first time I saw you, but it’s mostly how much joy you bring to each other despite some pretty shitty circumstances. I mean, look at this absolutely beautiful baby you made! This was you two! And your love!’
She paused for a moment before raising her eyebrows a bit.
‘And some sort of perhaps not entirely ethical divine intervention.’
Lucifer hummed. ‘There is that.’
‘But worth every moment of my pregnancy,’ Chloe insisted for what felt like the millionth time as she bumped her shoulder into Lucifer judgmentally.
‘She is absolutely the greatest gift I could begin to imagine,’ Lucifer admitted quietly, and he reached out to softly brush her curls. ‘A treasure I never thought I’d want or receive – certainly not one I deserve – and yet here I am feeling as though another dead part of my heart has started to perfuse again.’
Ella looked absolutely ecstatic, her eyes tearing up, but she didn’t say a word.
