Chapter Text
“Rex?” Alces asked, surprisingly calm for the situation they had found themselves in. They hadn't been warned about possibly walking into a SandWing army camp when they had agreed to run a message. “Do you think that maybe we were lied to?”
“You may be onto something.” Rex said. He eyed the spears of the SandWing soldiers, very aware of how sharp they were. He had a few options, if they needed to fight. He'd managed to talk a very reluctant Sponsa into giving him one of the fire bracelets, and his other magic of choice was a new one. If it worked, they would have a much better chance of escaping without injury.
“Are we running or not? Because we're out of time.” Alces took a step back, but also reached for his sword. The SandWings had finally noticed them, and were a lot faster than Rex had thought they would be.
“Running! We're running!” Rex dug his claws into the sand, and whispered the trigger word. Small spikes burst out of the ground, starting from in front of him and rolling out a short distance. The SandWings stumbled back, confusion on all of their faces. Rex turned and ran, quickly catching up with Alces.
When they stopped running, within sight of a small settlement, the exhaustion finally hit him. He hadn't expected the cost to be that high, and it almost knocked him out of the air. Alces noticed Rex almost collapse, and decided they wouldn't be going anywhere else.
“You need to sleep. Let me take watch.” Rex knew arguing wasn't going to help, and was too tired to even try. He fell asleep almost immediately after closing his eyes.
