It was freezing cold and even after he entered the heated mall, Keonho’s nose was still frozen. As well as his cheeks it had turned all pink and his fingertips had gone numb due to the low temperature. He tightened his scarf just a tiny bit, hoping his body would warm up quickly.
His mom had asked him to go grocery shopping for tomorrow's new years eve dinner and Keonho was more than glad to have an excuse to escape the chaos going on at his house. Everyone was stressed and reacted sensitive towards any small inconvenience. Yesterday his parents fought because apparently Keonho’s dad had bought the wrong ingredients and now he was the one who had been given the task to get the right ones for tomorrow’s meal. The whole city was covered in lights and Christmas decorations, spreading the coziness through the busy streets.
“Keonho?”
A sudden voice made the boy turn around. Searching for the person who had said his name, he met a pair of eyes sparkling so beautifully. The boy stepped closer and with that the smile on his face grew wider.
The realization of Seonghyeon, his favourite person standing right there in front of him, hit him hard. But Keonho couldn’t contain his joy, not anymore. They hadn’t seen each other since the middle of December, not even before Christmas to go ice skating together like every year.
Seonghyeon welcomed him with open arms and Keonho didn’t even hesitate to pull the other into a hug. It fascinated him how the tickle on his skin felt so different but so familiar every time they touched. At the beginning of this year Seonghyeon was the one making Keonho question how straight he actually was and turns out he in fact wasn’t.
But he kept his feelings for himself, at least he tried. Every time they hung out with the rest of the friend group they would keep teasing him whenever Seonghyeon was out of sight.
“What’s up?” Seonghyeon asked after they parted again.
“Well, chaos, stress, discussions you know…as always,” Keonho responded, not really trying to hide the exhaustion behind those words because with Seonghyeon he could be honest.
“I see,” he quietly responded, “well, how was your Christmas? I saw your stories and yes I was jealous.”
Keonho’s chest tightened at the small pout that appeared on his face. God, how pretty he was.
“I missed you,” Keonho suddenly dropped and quickly added, “and the others.”
“Yeah, me too. It was pretty boring spending the Christmas days all alone,” he chuckled and scratched his neck awkwardly.
“Hey, why don’t we meet tomorrow night? To watch the fireworks and count down to the beginning of the new year?”
Keonho wanted to scream of joy, wanted to jump up and down and pull the boy into a hug again. But he contained himself. Instead he smiled and nodded excitedly at Seonghyeon’s request.
“Great! I’ll see you tomorrow then?” the other reassured satisfiedly.
“Yup, just text me,” Keonho answered, the smile never vanishing off his face. After saying goodbye he waved until Seonghyeon disappeared in the crowded mall and Keonho was left in an oddly happy mood for the rest of the day.
⋆˚𝜗𝜚˚⋆
That evening Keonho stayed up till late to finish Seonghyeon’s christmas present. He originally planned to give it to him after the holidays but now that they would meet up tomorrow he was determined to finish it tonight. Keonho wasn’t the most creative person to exist but he had spent a huge amount of time making it as perfect as possible.
It was a small photobook with twelve pages, one for each month, filled with pictures of their friends hanging out, them on a trip or at school.
His personal favourite was the one picturing only the two of them, Seonghyeon’s arm lazily wrapped around Keonho’s shoulder while walking along the beach. He smiled when he remembered how James had proudly shown him the picture he had taken of the two and how Keonho had quite literally begged the older to send it to him.
The small book was decorated with various stickers and doodles, making it especially personal and special in its own way. Keonho started feeling nervous now, which was weird because it obviously wasn’t his first time hanging out with Seonghyeon. Still his heart beat faster at the thought of hanging out with him at night.
Fortunately he knew exactly who was most likely still awake around this late hour.
KEONHO :p
ey yo, still awake?
As expected his best friend replied immediately.
MARTIN (fashion king)

The 31st of December began with warm pancakes. Keonho took a generous bite and enjoyed the quietness of eating breakfast alone.
Since it had snowed the whole night, the streets were completely white. It was freezing cold and he was more than happy to be sitting in the warmth, sipping his hot chocolate. Keonho daydreamed about his nightly meet up and how he was going to hand over Seonghyeon’s gift.
Speaking of the devil, his phone buzzed. It was a message from Seonghyeon.
HYEON <3
tell me why i’m already standing in the kitchen making cookies?
it’s 10 a.m. !!!!
Keonho giggled at his text and responded immediately.
KEONHO :p
lucky me
i’m eating pancakes and hot chocolate rn ^-^
HYEON <3
ughhh i’m jealous
The boy hesitated a second. It was 10 a.m. and he was still wearing his pajamas. Despite looking like a mess he tried to fix his hair and sat up straight. He took a few pictures and selected the best one to send. He nervously waited a few minutes before he finally got a reply.
KEONHO :p

HYEON <3
*hyeon <3 reacted with ♥︎ to your message*
this just sweetened my morning
Five simple words that caused Keonho’s face to heat up. Keonho quickly put his phone aside and finished his breakfast, knowing he later had to face the boy that just told him he was sweet.
⋆˚𝜗𝜚˚⋆
The day was busy and packed with preparations for the family dinner. Keonho had to clean the house and help out in the kitchen. During his short breaks he would text Seonghyeon who was working just as hard as him. Occasionally he’d send a few photos of his works as well as some selfies. Keonho admired the boy in the pictures, he just looked unfairly pretty.
It turned dark outside quickly and soon Keonho’s family members rang the door. The boy was hugged by several aunts and uncles who he hadn’t seen in years and were impressed by how much he had grown. Keonho sat at the table, surrounded by adults who asked him about his grades and future plans over and over again. Someone even joked about him still not having a girlfriend, which he left uncommented. Between eating, chatting and Keonho assuring everyone that he’s doing well in school, he checked his phone from time to time. The last message Seonghyeon had sent him was about an hour ago and he hadn’t texted since then. He was probably just as busy with his family as Keonho.
Around 11 p.m. he excused himself to use the restroom. Shutting the door behind him and leaning against the cold wood, he pulled out his phone to see an unread message from the group chat. Martin had sent a photo of Juhoon and him chilling on the sofa, curled up in each other’s arms. Martin was wearing a sparkling headband, with happy new year written on it while Juhoon seemed to just accept the boy for who he was. A truly beautiful couple.

Keonho stopped at Seonghyeon’s response and opened his private chat with him.
KEONHO :p

To his pleasure he replied only seconds later.
HYEON <3

KEONHO :p
yeah sure!

i’ll hurry
He rushed back to the family gathering and fortunately everyone was involved in conversations. Keonho told his parents that he would go outside to watch the fireworks and sprinted to the door to quickly put on his boots as well as his winter jacket. He almost forgot about the present but remembered just in time and ran back to his room.
The cold air hit him like a wall when he stepped outside. His breath was visible in the dark night. Explosions, fireworks and the smell of burned material filled the air. With his phone in one hand and the photobook in his other hand, he walked down the street. The closer he got to the shore of the river, the more people seemed to appear. The crowd was huge and everyone was waiting for the grand finale including counting down to the beginning of the new year.
Keonho was so mesmerised by the colourful lights in the sky that he didn’t notice somebody approaching him. Seonghyeon tapped the boy on his shoulder who was slightly startled at the sudden touch. But his smile widened as he recognized those beautiful dark eyes, shining even brighter under the lights of the fireworks. He automatically hid the book behind his back.
“Hey,” Keonho whispered, unsure of what to say or do. But Seonghyeon overcame the awkward silence by grabbing his wrist and pulling him further away from the noisy crowd. Keonho followed him silently and stared at the boy’s hand holding his wrist the whole time. After bumping into several people and leaving the crowded space behind, Seonghyeon stopped by the shore of the river. Slightly out of breath he turned around to face Keonho and a shy smile spread over his face.
“Sorry, I just really wanted us to come here. It’s the best spot to watch the fireworks,” he quietly added, scratching his neck.
“No, don’t worry,” Keonho quickly responded to not make the boy feel guilty, “you chose a nice place!”
The awkward silence returned and Keonho hated it, why was he like this? Usually they would talk nonstop and feel comfortable with each other but now they both didn’t dare to speak. Keonho held tighter onto the book, still hidden behind his back and took a deep breath.
“I- um…,” his shaky hands pulled up the photobook and Keonho saw Seonghyeon’s eyes widen at the sight of a dark brown cover with the year written on it in large numbers, “I actually have something for you.”
Keonho stretched out his arms, waiting for the other to accept the present. He was too scared to really look him in the eyes but he did it anyway and his chest tightened when he saw how the boy looked at the gift in front of him. Eventually Seonghyeon slowly reached out for the book, his lips parted as if he wanted to say something but couldn’t find the right words. When he held the book in his hands he stared at it a little longer before lifting his head.
His eyes spoke more than a thousand words. The warmth, the appreciation, the gratefulness sparkled in the iris of those beautiful dark eyes. Keonho was so mesmerized by Seonghyeon’s beauty that he was taken aback for a second when his words suddenly filled the air.
“You..,” his eyes went back to the book and he gently brushed his fingers over the title,”you made this…for me? Are you crazy?”
A nervous laugh escaped Keonho and he automatically took a step forward to take a better look at the present again.
“Open it,” he quietly said and Seonghyeon didn’t hesitate to open the first page.
He silently watched Seonghyeon flip through the pages filled with the pictures he had thoughtfully selected and decorated with stickers and small notes. When his favourite photo of them together at the beach appeared it suddenly came off way more intimate than he had thought. Seonghyeon stopped and looked at the young boys in the photo, the water surface sparkling in the background and the sun shining down on them brightly.
“I remember this,” Seonghyeon whispered and quietly continued flipping through the pages, while the corners of his mouth lifted into a smile.
At the last page, Keonho took a step back again to watch the boy from a distance. Seonghyeon held the book dearly as if someone could take it away from him and took a deep breath before turning his face towards the boy again.
“Thank you so so much, Keonho.”
The words hung heavy in between them and Keonho wanted to hear them again, wanted to hear the boy say his name one more time.
Sudden shouts from afar caught their attention and they turned around to see the sky being illuminated by the first few fireworks. The pink, green, orange and blue explosions sparkled in the dark night sky and their surroundings shone in colourful tones.
Keonho watched as the show exaggerated more and more, the explosions intensified and the lights got brighter.
He pulled out his phone to look at the time. Three minutes left till midnight.
When he looked up again, watching the lights dancing in the sky, he caught Seonghyeon staring at him.
“What?” he asked, getting almost intimidated by the boy staring so intensively.
“I love it so much,” he quietly replied and it took Keonho a few seconds to realize that he was talking about his Christmas present.
Keonho laughed nervously and added, “it’s nothing special, really,” while his heart was beating faster and faster.
“It is,” Seonghyeon responded casually, still refusing to leave the boy’s eyes, “at least to me.”
Without any warning Keonho found himself being held in Seonghyeon’s arms. The boy had stepped forward so suddenly, that Keonho didn’t even have time to react at all. His arms wrapped around Keonho’s shoulders, holding him tightly and his warm breath tickled his skin. The sharp pain Keonho felt in his heart was making him numb, the voices and shouts didn’t matter anymore and the loud explosions seemed to have gone completely silent.
It was only them. Right now. Right here.
It took Keonho a full minute to finally raise his arms and loosely place them around Seonghyeon. He wanted to hold him and make sure the boy’s smile never vanished. He wanted to be the only one making him smile like this and his chest tightened as he realized how insecure he was about his feelings for his best friend.
Sooner or later it would kill him, for sure. Sooner or later he would combust, his bottled up emotions exploding all at once. Or maybe that wasn’t going to happen in the near future, not even in ten years. Because maybe, just maybe, this moment was now.
00:10
Keonho carefully backed off to look, really look at the boy in front of him. His sleepy eyes told him that he was quite confused why he had pulled back.
00:09
“Seonghyeon,” he began. It was only a whisper but loud enough for the other boy to answer with a lazy, “hm?”
00:08
Keonho’s heartbeat rang in his ears, nothing could or would stop him now. Not even himself.
00:07
“Tell me if I’m doing something stupid,” Keonho muttered, but he didn’t wait for an answer. The truth was he didn’t want to hear it.
00:06
The shock in Seonghyeon’s eyes was impossible to miss as Keonho grabbed the boy by his collar and pulled him closer.
00:05
Their lips met and the world froze in time.
00:04
Those cold lips on Keonho’s were softer and sweeter than he could’ve ever imagined. The plumpy skin made his knees become weak and his heart melted away when the warmth of their mouths spread through every inch of their bodies.
00:03
No feeling he had ever experienced was remotely close to what was going on in Keonho’s stomach right now and he instinctively lifted his hands to hold onto the boy’s neck.
00:02
Seonghyeon was the one to make the first move. He took a step back, breathing in deeply and exhaling again while looking to the ground. But not for long because he chased Keonho’s eyes, looking like stars in the sky.
00:01
But the chasing didn’t stop at his eyes because he craved that feeling again. His right hand cupped Keonho’s cheeks and he carefully leaned in again. Tasting, enjoying and wanting this moment to last forever.
00:00
The crowd shouted, but the noises were irrelevant. Nothing mattered except for them being here. Kissing and holding each other dearly and making this moment theirs.
It was a short and tender kiss but it was deeply meaningful, not only for Keonho.
They parted, foreheads resting against each other.
“Finally,” Seonghyeon mumbled and made the other laugh shyly.
His hand slipped from the boy’s face to his neck, pulling him closer and making him blush even harder.
“Happy new year,” he added quietly while that stupid smile on his face just wouldn’t disappear.
“That was in fact the best way to start the new year,” Keonho responded and Seonghyeon chuckled, his grin widening even more.
He took a step back and grabbed the boy’s hand instead to delicately intertwine their fingers.
Keonho had forgotten to bring his gloves with him and he hadn’t even noticed how freezing cold his fingers had gotten.
“Woah, Keonho,” Seonghyeon looked down on their hands surprisedly, covering the other’s fingers with both of his hands to warm them up, “your hands have practically turned into ice.”
“Oh, sorry,” Keonho quickly pulled his hand back, embarrassed and fluttered by Seonghyeon’s words.
‘No, that’s not what I meant,“ Seonghyeon immediately grabbed his hand again and started rubbing their palms together. Keonho could only stare at their fingers and with how much caution Seonghyeon took care of him. The blush creeped up his neck, lost for words.
“Do you want to go somewhere warmer? What about my place?”
Keonho didn’t even register the question fully, but he already started nodding. He was freezing to death and a warm house sounded like a dream on this snowy night.
Hand in hand they walked along the dark streets, their hands never parting. They chatted, laughed, cracked a few jokes and luckily none of it felt awkward or weird. It was past midnight, but they only encountered very few people that were either drunk or just naturally loud. The fireworks had quietened down and the silence that followed after the new years eve celebration was oddly calm.
Seonghyeon didn’t live far away from Keonho and they arrived at the entrance door within 15 minutes of walking through the city. Seonghyeon temporarily let go of the other’s hand to find his keys and opened the door.
“Are your parents okay with me coming over?” Keonho suddenly asked. He hadn’t even thought of maybe interrupting a family celebration.
“Don’t worry, they aren’t even home. They’re at some friend's house I think,” he replied and held the door open, waiting for the boy to enter. Keonho didn’t know if this new piece of information was better or worse, but he tried to shake off his thoughts and followed Seonghyeon into his apartment.
The door closed behind them as they took off their shoes, which Keonho was struggling with at first. By the time Keonho had finally managed to place his shoes at the side, Seonghyeon had already gone to his room. After a few more minutes Keonho carefully followed to where the other had disappeared to earlier. It obviously wasn’t his first time being at Seonghyeon’s place, but tonight was the first time after things had gone…differently. He arrived at the already opened door and entered by carefully pushing against the wood.
In front of him was Seonghyeon spreading a fluffier and thicker blanket over his bed. The book was on his desk, the lights were dim and he had definitely turned on the heating, which Keonho was more than glad about.
“Don’t act like you’ve never been here before,” Seonghyeon commented as he crawled to the end of his bed and let himself fall down on his back. After he noticed that Keonho wasn’t going to move on his own, he raised his head and patted his palm on the space next to him.
“Come here,” he encouraged him and patted on his blanket one more time before he watched the boy slowly approaching his bed.
Keonho still hesitated but eventually, at the edge of Seonghyeon’s bed, he gave in by crawling onto the blanket and landing beside the boy. When he landed on his back he was overwhelmed by a sudden wave of exhaustion, the softness of the mattress making him all sleepy.
“If you don’t mind…,” Seonghyeon whispered, his voice right next to Keonho’s ear, which made him turn his head to face him directly. But Seonghyeon didn’t finish his sentence, he wasn’t even trying to hide his clinginess anymore. The boy suddenly shifted to the side and moved a tiny bit closer, his arm placed on Keonho’s chest while noticing the boy’s body tensing up. Keonho’s breath hitched as Seonghyeon shifted even closer and additionally, to make him go completely insane, buried his face into the crook of his neck.
And who was Keonho to refuse cuddling with his favourite person?
He did Seonghyeon, who seemed like his neck was about to get stiff, the favour to reposition himself so that they could lay arm in arm comfortably.
“What do you want to achieve this year?” Seonghyeon softly asked, his breath warm against Keonho’s skin.
“Hmmm…,” Keonho made a dramatic pause, “maybe…become your boyfriend?”
Seonghyeon didn’t need to see his face to know how proud he must be of his answer. He grinned automatically and Keonho knew he landed a good punch line as he felt the other’s lips curl into a smile and chuckle against his neck.
“We’re not even an hour into the new year and you’ve already succeeded,” he replied shyly, his face heating up and burning into the boy’s skin.
Just like Seonghyeon, Keonho’s red face didn’t reduce its colour a bit, in fact it intensified even more. A pause, filled with silence neither of them could interpret.
Seonghyeon delicately lifted his head to look at Keonho and a sense of insecurity appeared in his own eyes.
“Only if you want to, of course…,” he mumbled, suddenly anxious he had taken it too far.
But the smile that appeared on Keonho’s face eased his doubt immediately.
“Are you kidding me?” he started, genuinely surprised by Seonghyeon’s absurd question, “I’ve liked you for such a long time now and you seriously think I wouldn’t want to be your boyfriend?”
He sounded almost offended and Seonghyeon couldn’t help but laugh at his sweet and slightly angry response. He just snuggled closer, hiding his face in the boy’s neck again and enjoyed the feeling of soft fingertips tenderly drawing circling motions on his back.
It didn’t take long for both of them to fall asleep. The low lights, the warmth and the softness of their touches made their bodies relax and recover from all of the build up stress.
It was just them. Holding each other and breathing in an even rhythm.

Epilogue
“Where are James and Keonho?” Juhoon asked, while trying to open his lunch box that didn’t seem to cooperate. With force he tried to open the lid but his hands kept sliding over the metal and his patience didn’t seem to last long.
“They went to buy drinks,” Seonghyeon replied and both, him and Martin, sighed when Juhoon didn’t manage to open his lunch box even after the seventh try.
“Give me that,” Martin said and impatiently grabbed the boy’s lunch before he could potentially hurt himself. With a clear click the lid opened and Martin slowly placed Juhoon’s food in front of him.
“Thanks,” he muttered and silently bit into his sandwich. The other scoffed at his pout and grabbed his own lunch box.
The three of them sat at a table in the cafeteria, eating their food and talking about their Christmas holidays. It was the second week of school in January and they only now had time to finally meet again. Their schedules were so different that they never found the right day and time to eat together, but luckily today was a day their breaks overlapped for once.
“Over here!” Martin stood up and waved at the two people that just appeared at the door. Martin’s height was impossible to overlook and the two boys slowly approached the table, drinks in each hand.
Seonghyeon’s face immediately lit up at the sight of those beautiful, dark eyes that searched for him in this crowded hall.
“God, the supermarket was full,” James groaned, sitting down next to Martin and placing the drinks in front of him in the middle of the table. Martin quickly reached forward to grab his favourite juice and handed one to Juhoon as well. Keonho followed and let himself fall down on the only chair left, next to Seonghyeon. He slid even more drinks to the center of the table and grabbed his bag to unpack his own lunch.
He acted unbothered but in reality he really wanted to hug the boy next him, hold his hand and listen to him talk about his day. But Keonho wasn’t sure how, when or if Seonghyeon was even ready to make it official yet, which is why he had made a plan.
The boy wanted to talk to Seonghyeon first and ask him about his thoughts on his plan. He then would continue to write a short message to each of their friends privately.
Keonho didn’t doubt their approval of their relationship, he was just really scared of their teasing that would start because of it.
His final step was to figure out how much of a couple they could be in public spaces for example at school, where rumours spread like diseases.
Keonho was so lost in his own thoughts that he didn’t even register whatever the others were talking about. He quietly ate his noodles and tried to contribute to the conversation by listening attentively. Seonghyeon was talking about all the things that went wrong and joked about traveling to the north pole to complain to Santa Claus personally.
James also shared his holiday experience he spent with his family and how he had to act grateful for a pair of socks.
A quiet pause. All of them ate peacefully and sipped their drinks when Seonghyeon realized how thirsty he had been this whole time. He looked at the various juices and energy drinks in front of him and spotted an orange soda can standing beside Keonho. Seonghyeon finished eating and pointed at the drink he really wanted to try.
“Babe, could you pass me that soda can? Please?”
His voice was calm, his words innocent and his eyes still fixated on the boy sitting next to him. Keonho looked at the drink he was pointing at and automatically grabbed it. Right when he was about to pass it over he froze mid action. With the can in his hand, his eyes widened and the blush creeped up his neck. Keonho just realized what the boy had said. Babe.
He said it so casually and confidently, right in front of the others, who didn’t seem as casual as Seonghyeon did. The three boys stared at each other and then back to the still innocent looking Seonghyeon and the now red Keonho.
Juhoon was the first to break the awkward silence.
“Babe?” he slowly repeated, his stare sharp but still slightly confused.
“Babe!?” Now it was James who had stopped eating and was visibly trying to process the sudden confession.
“You guys are…,” Martin began but Keonho’s groan interrupted him before he could even finish. Still, the intention behind his words were clear and it seemed like Seonghyeon just now realized what he did.
“Oh fuck,” is all he said while Keonho was dragging his palms over his face.
“That’s not how I had imagined it,” Keonho muttered but everyone got the message behind those words anyway.
“I’m sorry-,” Seonghyeon turned around to the boy who looked like was having an internal crisis, which was probably the case, “I- I didn’t mean to. It just slipped out!”
He pulled at his sleeve, trying to get Keonho to look at him, which he did. James was visibly interested in the drama and continued to ask more questions.
“Since when?” he asked, practically leaning over his food.
“New Years eve,” Keonho mumbled and Martin clapped once, startling the younger beside him.
“I knew it! I told you he didn’t mean it in a platonic way!” he exclaimed proudly, looking like he had just solved a murder case.
“Martin!” Keonho cussed, embarrassed by the sudden exposure right in front of Seonghyeon. But Seonghyeon wasn’t dumb and his eyes widened as they found their way back to Keonho’s.
“Why would I platonically ask you out to meet me at night? On New Year's eve?” he asked, chuckling at the absurdness of this question and the boy’s embarrassment.
“Hey! I was the one who gave you that photobook,” Keonho replied, looking almost offended.
“That’s the most romantic shit I’ve ever heard,” James admitted and let himself fall back on his chair.
“Well, finally. You both didn’t hide it well,” Juhoon commented unbothered and just kept eating his lunch peacefully.
Seonghyeon looked down on his hands and internally just wished to disappear right on the spot. His face heated up and he cursed at himself for not being more careful with his words, after all he didn’t know how comfortable Keonho was with the label yet.
“Well,” Keonho finally placed the drink Seonghyeon had asked for in front of his face, "I guess now that you already spilled it, it doesn’t matter anymore.”
The boy reached out for Seonghyeon’s hand, which he was fidgeting with and intertwined their fingers. Seonghyeon looked up in surprise and stared at their hands, blushing at the sudden touch and the warmth that spread through his body. He smiled shyly and let out a nervous laugh when he met the other’s eyes. Their hands stayed like that, on Seonghyeon’s lap and Keonho carefully brushed his thumb up and down along the back of the boy’s hand. It was his way to assure him that he wasn’t mad, not even in the slightest.
In the end their friends couldn’t contain their giggles and jokes anymore and so the teasing began. But if it meant for the two to be holding hands all day long, it was definitely worth it.
