A Kiss for New Years

Summary:

Atsumu’s heart stopped when he opened the door. In front of him stood Sakusa fucking Kiyoomi, dressed in well-fitting khaki pants and a dark jade button-down shirt with the sleeves rolled up, revealing well-toned forearms. The most distracting element of Kiyoomi’s ensemble was the delicate silver chain around his neck, which perfectly accentuated his collarbones.

“H-hi,” Atsumu breathed, feeling his face flush as he opened the door. “Glad ya could make it, Omi.”

“Likewise,” Kiyoomi smiled gently, his dark green eyes soft. Atsumu could feel himself turning into putty at the sight of Kiyoomi’s smile.

Or

Atsumu Miya invites Kiyoomi to spend New Year's with him and his daughters so that Kiyoomi wouldn't be by himself.

Work Text:

“So, Omi,” Atsumu started, as he freshened up in the locker room with Kiyoomi after practice, “ya got any plans for New Year's?”

“Not really,” Kiyoomi sighed. Atsumu couldn’t help but notice how the other man looked slightly depressed at the mention of the upcoming holiday. “Motoya and Suna are going to be spending it at some upscale resort, my parents are going back to Korea, and my siblings are going to be with their own families.”

Atsumu frowned at the response. He’d known for a while that Kiyoomi wasn’t exactly close to his family, with his cousin being the only exception; Atsumu was absolutely positive that Kiyoomi was closer to Atsumu’s family than his own.

“Why don’tcha spend New Year’s with me ‘n’ the girls?” Atsumu blurted, his face heating up as he realized what he had just asked. “We-we’re spendin’ it at Samu ‘n’ Keiji’s new house with Ma ‘n’ them.”

“I wouldn’t want to impose,” Kiyoomi mumbled, rubbing the back of his neck as the tips of his ears turned a light pink.

“I wouldn’t invite ya if I thought you were gonna impose,” Atsumu replied, his voice light. “Plus, ma’s been askin’ about ya. She sees you as yet another son now.”

“In that case,” a small smile graced Kiyoomi’s features, “I’d love to come over.”

****

“What the fuck was I thinkin’ when I asked Omi to come over?!” Atsumu demanded, more to himself than his brother and his fiancé.

“Ya asked the man who’s been coparentin’ yer daughters to our New Year’s Eve party,” Osamu retorted, not looking up from his soup pot. “I’d say that’s a pretty rational thing couples do.”

“We’re not even datin’, Samu!” Atsumu groaned, raking his hands through his hair. “He just likes hangin’ out with me ‘n’ the girls!”

“Atsumu, the man looks at you and your daughters as if you were the one who hung the moon and they put up the stars,” Keiji stated, cleaning his glasses.

Osamu mutters several curses under his breath before turning down the stove and making his way over to Atsumu and slapping the back of his head. “Get yer head out of that big, dumb ass of yours and ask Kiyo out!”

“It’s not that sim-,” Atsumu began, pinching the bridge of his nose as his temper began to flare. He did not want to rehash this on New Year’s. Not with Kiyoomi on his way over.

“Don’t say ‘it’s not that simple,” Osamu interrupted, crossing his arms. “What’re ya so scared of, Tsumu?”

“I’m scared of fuckin’ up my daughters if it doesn’t work out,” Atsumu responded truthfully, his voice quiet as his throat started to swell. “They think they’re the reason why no one comes over a second time.” He curses mentally as a familiar and unwelcome burning sensation starts behind his eyes. “I’m worried they’re gonna end up like me. A hot fuckin’ mess who can’t seem to start or keep a healthy relationship.”

“Tsumu,” Osamu replied as he wrapped Atsumu in a tight embrace, his voice firm. “I’m gonna tell ya this once. Yer not a mess and yer doing a damn fine job raisin’ Hima ‘n’ Haru.” Osamu’s grip grew tighter as he continued. “That bitch leavin’ you ‘n’ the girls says absolutely nothing about how well ya manage relationships. The others who’ve left won’t know how awesome my nieces are, and that’s on them.”

Osamu broke the embrace at the distant sound of the doorbell. “Give the man a chance, Tsmu,” he added, gently punching him in the chest. “He clearly wants to be in both yer life and the girls’.”

Atsumu nodded, scrubbing at his face before making his way to let Kiyoomi in.

“Hurry up and shut tha fuckin’ door, Tsumu,” Osamu yelled from the kitchen, “yer letting in cold air ‘n’ I’m sure Kiyo doesn’t wanna spend New Year’s Eve outside.”

Osamu’s comment snapped Atsumu out of the trance Kiyoom’s forearms brought him into, and his eyes drifted to an astronomically expensive-looking bottle of red wine along with four gift bags that the man currently held.

Goddamn it.

“I told ya not to spend a ton of money on gifts, Omi,” Atsumu huffed as he grabbed the bottle of wine out of Kiyoomi’s hands and inspected it. Atsumu thought he was going to have an aneurysm when Kiyoomi rang the doorbell. That same aneurysm was in full force now when he saw the name of it. Domaine Takahiko.

“This costs about as much as my fuckin’ rent, Omi,” Atsumu sputtered, ushering Kiyoomi inside, “I can’t take this!”

“Good thing it’s not for you then,” Kiyoomi snorted as he took off his shoes. “You only said I couldn’t spend a lot of money on you and the girls.”

A loud yet distant ‘Omi’s here!’ rang out, followed by two sets of hurried footsteps as Atsumu’s seven-year-old twin daughters ran to the entryway, sliding and nearly crashing into Kiyoomi in the process.

“Haru and Himari Miya!” Atsumu’s mother scolded, making her way to the girls, “what have me ‘n’ yer daddy said about running in the house?!”

“Sorry, Baba-chan,” the girls mumbled, hanging their heads as Atsumu laughed warmly at his daughters.

“Honestly,” she huffed, “it’s like dealin’ with yer daddy ‘n’ uncle all over again.” She stopped lecturing the girls and looked up at Kiyoomi, a bright smile gracing her features. “Kiyoomi! I’m so glad you could make it!” She pressed a kiss to his cheek as he walked in.

“Thank you for having me, Miya-san,” Kiyoomi nodded politely, as both Himari and Haru eagerly grabbed each of his hands, pulling him further into the house.

“Please, Kiyo,” she chided playfully, “I’ve told ya. My name’s Mariko, not ‘Miya-san’.”

“Right,” Kiyoomi relented, briefly letting go of Haru and Himari to hand her a gift. “Thank you for having me, Mariko.”

“Didja get us gifts too, Omi?!” Haru asked excitedly, glaring at Atsumu when he gently flicked her nose and said something about minding her manners.

Kiyoomi’s smile brightened a little more as he patted the top of Haru and Himari’s heads. “Of course I did.”

“Can we open ‘em now, daddy?” Himari asked innocently, clearly trying to fight the urge to look inside the bags Kiyoomi was holding.

“After dinner, Gummy Bear,” Atsumu responded as he pressed a kiss to her and Haru’s heads, “Uncle Samu’s been workin’ hard all day to make us somethin’ delicious. Ya’d get so focused on the gifts and forget about the food.”

“Fine,” Haru huffed as she leaned into Atsumu.

“Speaking of dinner,” Kiyoomi chimed in, grabbing the long-forgotten and ungodly expensive bottle of wine, “I brought this for Keiji and Osamu as a housewarming gift. Think it’ll go well with dinner?”

Atsumu rolled his eyes before nodding, “Unfortunately, I think it will.”

Once dinner was finished, Atsumu and the rest of his family were gathered in the living room as Kiyoomi handed out the little gift bags. The same small smile came back to his face, his eyes holding an immense amount of love and admiration as he watched Haru and Himari squeal with delight while opening the gift bags.

Atsumu couldn’t help but smile. Maybe Keiji was onto something earlier when he mentioned that Kiyoomi looked at his daughters like they put the stars in the sky.

“Daddy! Daddy look what Omi got me!” Haru’s ecstatic little squeal snapped Atsumu out of his drifting thoughts and he smiled once more as he acknowledged one of his daughters.

“What’d he getcha, baby?” Atsumu responded, his breath hitching when he looked at the items in her hands. A Barbie doll and a scarf that was clearly hand-knitted with the MSBY colors and patches on it that spelled out ‘MIYA 2’.

Himari let out an excited gasp as she opened her own gift: an art kit and a scarf identical to Haru’s but with ‘MIYA 1’ sewn in.

“She’s diabetic like me, daddy! She has all of the thingies that I have!” Haru continued, excitedly pointing out the various little devices on the doll that matched her own.

Atsumu’s eyes started to burn once more as he opened his own gift. He bit his lip as he looked at yet another scarf that had ‘MIYA 13’ on it along with a framed picture of Atsumu with Haru and Himari on a beach when they were babies.

“I remembered you mentioning that picture being one of your favorites.” Kiyoomi elaborated softly, referring to the picture that Atsumu was holding shakily. “Frankly, it’s one of mine too.”

Atsumu scrubbed at his eyes before wrapping Kiyoomi in a hug, “I love it, Omi. Thank you.”

“Daddy! It’s snowing!” Himari gasped, making her way to the window. “Can we play outside?!”

“Sure,” Atsumu smiled gently as he let go of Kiyoomi, “but yer putting on your coats and me ‘n’ Omi have to go outside with ya.”

****

“Can I tell ya somethin’, Omi?” Atsumu asked quietly as he and Kiyoomi watched Haru and Himari play in the snow.

“Go for it,” Kiyoomi responded, smiling softly as the girls started throwing snow at each other.

Atsumu inhaled shakily, hoping that the stinging sensation behind his eyes was from the bitter cold. “Truth is, I’ve been in love with ya forever.” He sniffled, scrubbing at his face. “Hell, the girls probably love you more than I do.” He let out a wet chuckle as he watched the girls play once more. “Which is why I was wonderin’ if ya wanted to pursue somethin’ with me.”

Tears were freely falling down his cheeks, and there was an uncomfortable ache in his chest once he finished. Several seconds of dead silence passed before he opened his mouth, wanting to tell Kiyoomi to forget that he ever said anything in the first place, in hopes that what they did have wouldn’t be destroyed.

Kiyoomi let out a small, affectionate huff as he wiped away a stray tear with his thumb. “I thought we were already pursuing something,” Kiyoomi smiled, pressing his lips to Atsumu’s forehead. “If we’re not, I want to ask the girls and have their blessing, considering that the three of you are a package deal.”

“Girls,” Atsumu said shakily as Kiyoomi ushered them into Atsumu’s apartment later. “Me ‘n’ Omi have somethin’ important we need to talk to you guys about.” Himari opened her mouth, about to comment on what Atsumu was saying. “No, Hima, you guys are not in trouble. Omi just wants to ask ya something.”

Kiyoomi cleared his throat, his expression serious as he knelt down to eye-level with the twins. “If it’s alright with you two, I want to date your father.” He stated, his voice gentle but blunt.

Haru and Himari looked at each other as though they were having a silent conversation before approaching him, their eyes holding the same hint of determination he’s seen in their father many, many times. Atsumu always claimed that his daughters looked identical to their mother, inheriting almost nothing from him except for the same shade of sharp, honey-brown eyes that could see through anything or anyone. In that very moment, Atsumu couldn’t help but smile. Those girls were absolutely his, and there was no doubt about it.

“How do we know ya won’t leave us?” Himari asked, eyeing Kiyoomi warily.

“All of daddy’s other friends have,” Haru added, looking down as tears started to build in her big, brown eyes. “They never come back over after they meet us.”

Atsumu exhaled shakily, ready to tell them something that even he wasn’t sure was true before Kiyoomi cut in.

“I can’t promise you that I’ll be here forever,” Kiyoomi said quietly, gently cupping each girl’s cheek, “but I can promise that while I am around, I’ll do my best to take care of you and your dad.”

Both girls looked at each other once more before nodding and wrapping themselves around Kiyoomi in a small group hug. Atsumu let out a small hiccup before joining in the hug as well. “Come on, my little Gummy Bears,” Atsumu said a few minutes later, “it’s past yer bed time.”

“We ain’t sleepy, daddy,” Himari protested, stifling a yawn as Atsumu picked both girls up with Haru falling into a light doze. “We wanna spend more time with Omi.”

“I’ll be here in the morning, girls,” Kiyoomi whispered, pressing kisses to Haru and Himari’s foreheads, “I promise.”

After tucking in his daughters, Atsumu returned several minutes later to Kiyoomi wrapped in a blanket on the couch. He smiled, taking the spot next to his new boyfriend and smiled contentedly before putting his legs on Kiyoomi’s lap. “This has been the best New Year’s celebration me ‘n’ the girls have had.” Atsumu smiled, pressing his lips to Kiyoomi’s twin moles.

“Hopefully it’s the best you’ve had so far,” Kiyoomi corrected, pressing his lips against Atsumu’s. “Happy New Year, Atsu.”
