"I have no strings, so I have fun, I'm not tied up to anyone."

Summary:

What was originally a kinda good idea turned bad. Now our, currently unamed, main character is stuck in this infinite circus

Title means literally nothing besides a small thing. I need a better name for it.

Notes:

There are a few hints about what this dude looks like, they should be easy to find.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter 1: "Haha, this game sure is... immersive. Almost feels... real."

Chapter Text

Well, this is officially a new low. Out of sheer boredom I had bought a random headset, mostly because it cost less but at the same time boredom. I'm pretty sure it was gonna arrive today but it hasn't shown up yet. Wonder if it got lost in the mail or whatever lame excuse they'll give me this time. The thing was weird too, based on the description it was just found in a random building somewhere. Hopefully it's not completely unusable.

I hear a knock on my front door. Speak of the devil and they shall appear. I walk to the front door and open it, expecting to see a delivery person there. There's no one there except the box containing the headset. Oh well!

I take the box inside my house and close the door. I quickly open the box and grab the headset. Almost instantly I put the thing on my head. Who cares what it looks like if it's fun. The headset takes a while to boot up. The thing slowly starts to boot up and a little opening plays. Cool. Wonder if there's any fun games on this.

The screen goes completely white as what I assume to be the main area loads up. It looks like a circus, I think I'm standing on a stage. There is no one else nearby. No NPC’s, no other character's, and no other players. That's… a bit weird. And I couldn't even select a name or anything and… and… what is my name?

“This doesn't feel right.” I can't explain why but this game just didn't feel right. I reach up and try to take off the headset. Why… why won't it come off? WHY WON'T IT COME OFF? I tug and pull at where I think it should be on my face and I don't feel anything. All I feel is… wood. Why does it feel like wood?

I don't have any time to think about that as I hear something or someone moving. I look to my left and see what can only be described as an abomination. It was a four legged thing that was pitch black. It looked like it was jittering, like it was glitching or something. There were eyes on the thing. Too many eyes, in all the wrong places. I don't want this thing to know I'm here.

Attempting to sneak away, I try to back up behind the stage curtains. I hear what sounds like wood pieces being hit together and the thing immediately turns its attention to me. Thinking quickly and scared out of my life I run as fast as I can. That same clacking sound like wood continues as I run. I try to find somewhere I can hide or climb up to.

Seeing a stack of blocks I try my best to climb to the top of them. I eventually get up there and I am, unfortunately, just a few inches higher than this thing. I was hoping for maybe a bit of more distance away from… this thing but I guess it's gonna have to do. Looking around, I try to see if there's anyone around or something I can go to. That's when I have possibly the worst idea I've ever had. There was a yellow barrel a little bit away that I could probably fit into. Maybe if I get into it I'll be safe? The lid is right next to it.

With no other option I decide that I may as well try it. Jumping down from the block I run as fast as I can towards the barrel. I can hear that thing right behind me. Making it to the barrel, I grab the lid before quickly jumping into it and slamming the lid down after me. For a second I don't hear anything. Did it just forget about me?

That's when the barrel is launched approximately, hmmmm, a lot of distance. Safe to say it hurt a lot when the barrel suddenly crashed into a wall. I think it fell to the floor and started rolling. Not wanting to sustain any more injuries, I quickly kick the top off of the barrel and crawl out of it. I look around and I think I'm on some sort of balcony thing? Well, I can at least get a better view of this place.

Looking down over this circus place, I see that it's sort of a circle with a bunch of doors possibly branching outwards into different hallways and rooms. I couldn't see the mass of eyes and shapes anymore so I'm gonna take that as a good start. Looking behind me there's a hallway that definitely leads somewhere.

Well, that is definitely a good place to start.

I start walking down the hallway, hopefully there'll be someone who'll tell me what's going on. This whole… VR thing is very immersive. It even kinda felt a bit painful. The buttons must also be pretty complicated because that menu button sure is hard to come by. It even made the headset feel like it wasn't even there, how cool! Hopefully I can start the tutorial or something and it'll tell me the gist of it all.

As I walk down the hallway, I take interest in how destroyed it is. Paintings on the walls tossed onto the floor, holes in the walls and floors, and it looks like a bit of the props around are glitching. Maybe it's kind of like a meta thing, like Oneshot or something. Based on how this game has felt this far, I really hope there aren't any combat encounters.

Eventually I come across an open door, maybe that's where the game was supposed to start? Looking into the room I see it is pretty much trashed and there's a lot of writing on the wall. It all looks like it's about… an exit? What? Looking at the door I see it had a picture of a clown on it.

Turning around, I take a look at a few of the other doors in their giant hallway. Some notable ones had a picture of a ragdoll, a rabbit with a bit of an unsettling smile, a jester with giant eyes, a chess piece, a comedy mask, something that looks like a ventriloquist doll, and what looks like a pink triangle on a stick. Guess those are NPCs.

A few doors had pictures with Xs on them, like a frog, a different chess piece, and some weird worm thing. Maybe those were deleted NPCs?

I'm not sure if I like it here all too much.

*gently whispers in your ear* "he's in denial"
