Mars, Again?

Summary:

We still Watch. Sometimes We catch Glimpses of them.

~~~
Or, some scenes after Joel whisked the Winners away in his car from Us (the Watchers).
Notes:
Originally I had this as chapter 2 of Celestial Objects, Eyes and a Car, but I found myself unsatisfied with the structure of the first chapter. As it's a waste to just remove it, I decided to make it a part two in a series instead. There's nothing new if you've already read it. If Nice Life had a new winner I would've added a chapter.
~~~
Old notes:

I loved Past Life. I'd already decided to give this a (short) update when we would get a new winner, but I couldn't resist adding one now.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

We are Watching an empty Void.

While it sounds contradictory, as by definition, the Void is supposed to be empty, it was once not.

Once, We had entertainment.

Once, We had Winners.

Defiance and Loyalty.

Loneliness and Ruthlessness.

Chaos and Steadfastliness.

They were delicious.

And they escaped Our View.

Sometimes, We catch Glances.

The first winner has started to relax around the fifth. The second and sixth winner have, bit by agonisingly slow bit, started to get the third to trust them again. The second and seventh still banter, but it has started to become more playful than aggressive. The fourth has lost track of time.

It is al so… boring. Wouldn’t it be much more exciting to betray? To fight? To sacrifice? To taste blood?

Look, the car, in an infinitilly large Void, almost crashes against the one thing that will finally allow the third winner to open up. This is the first time We’ve Seen her genuinely smile since her soulbond was denied.

The sixth winner gives up shotgun so the third has the room to sit there with the dog missing a fang in her lap. They’re supposed to be selfish.

Its tail is wagging so hard you’d think it just watched a particularly juicy octokill.

Pathetic.

Boring.

But there’s nothing else to do for Us than hope to see another Glimpse of them.

So, as always, We Watch.

However uninteresting Watching seven different winners argue over what music to listen to is.

There is still no sound in the Void.

Somehow, they simultaneously seem to think there is (their music taste is horrible. They should at least consider the Crane Wives).

Can't they just fight? Even just a little? A tiny papercut maybe?

The fourth winner falls off the roof.

The fifth winner talks about di-

Wait.

The fourth winner falls off the roof?

Finally.

Before any of them notice, he disappears into a nebula of purple.

Lost track of time, huh? Let's remind him.

And oh, isn’t it delicious?

This game has it all. Records are broken. It’s a trip to the past, a reminder of Our power.

Yet, when the fourth winner stands alone, surrounded by corpses in the excavation site, all he does is wait.

The winner who’s had to claw and bite for every valuable second waits.

And yet, he’s rewarded.

Before We can take him away again, play with him again, that damned vroooooooom is heard again.

He clambers back on the roof again with a sheepish smile.

Soon, they are out of Our View.

Again.

We do not sulk.

Notes:

Old Notes:

We definitely are sulking.

I wasn't going to add another part until we'd have gotten a new winner. But then I remembered I put Martyn on the roof, and that it would be funny to have him fall off of it.
