Work Text:

Christmas Eve always changed the dojo.

The lights were softer, the small tree by the window casting golden reflections across the mats. The silence wasn’t lonely—it was expectant.

Daniel LaRusso stayed later than necessary, wiping down surfaces that didn’t need cleaning.

Not because it mattered, but because leaving meant thinking.

And thinking hurt, just a little.

Johnny had said he’d stop by.

Nothing more than that.

No time.

No promise.

Just I’ll come by. Still, Daniel’s chest had felt tight all day, like his body knew something his mind refused to name.

When the door opened, Daniel didn’t turn right away. He recognized the footsteps before the voice.

—You’re still here? —Johnny said, casual in the way he only was when nervous.

Daniel turned and smiled.

Johnny stood in the doorway, jacket open, cheeks flushed from the cold… holding a small cardboard box with air holes punched into the sides.

Johnny Lawrence looked terrified.

—Yeah —Daniel said softly—. Just finishing up.

Johnny stepped inside but didn’t come close right away.

He looked at the box, then at Daniel, then down at the floor.

—Before you say anything —he began—. It’s not expensive. It’s not perfect. And it’s not… well. You’ll see. But it’s real.

Daniel watched him carefully.

He’d learned to read those pauses, the hesitation Johnny never admitted out loud.

—Johnny —Daniel said gently—. It’s okay.

Johnny exhaled like he’d been holding his breath for days.

He walked forward and held out the box.

—Merry Christmas.

Daniel took it.

It was warm.

Not cold from the December night, but warm.

Alive. Something shifted inside, and a small, indignant sound followed.

Daniel opened the box.

Two wide eyes stared back at him.

Black and white fur. Long whiskers. A pink nose. The kitten reached up with a clumsy paw… and sneezed.

Daniel laughed—and then cried.

—Oh… Johnny…

—Listen —Johnny said quickly—. I didn’t grab it off the street, okay? I went to a shelter. Asked questions. They said it needed a home. And I remembered what you said about Mr. Miyagi. About how empty the house felt after. I didn’t want to replace anything. Just… add something new.

The kitten climbed onto Daniel’s chest and began to purr.

Daniel looked up, eyes shining.

—It’s not a replacement —he whispered—. It’s a beginning.

Johnny froze, afraid to move.

Daniel closed the distance Johnny couldn’t.

He rested his forehead against Johnny’s, holding the kitten between them.

—Thank you —Daniel said, voice breaking—. For understanding me. For choosing me.

Johnny lifted a hand and brushed away a tear with his thumb.

—Always.

The kiss was slow. Warm. Christmas-quiet.

Johnny kissed Daniel’s cheek, then the corner of his mouth, and finally his lips—fully, tenderly, without rushing.

The kitten yawned and curled comfortably between them, as if it had always belonged there.

—I think we’re a family now —Daniel said with a shaky smile.

Johnny chuckled softly.

—Yeah… I think we are.

The dojo no longer felt empty.

It felt like home.
