Chapter 1: seven eleven

Chapter Text

“So did you say cherry…or lime?”

Veronica has never been so flustered in her life. This simultaneously hot and adorable guy offering to buy her a slurpee is making her feel all kinds of things she hasn’t felt before.

And she really wants to know if he’s flirting or not.

She wants to say something witty back, like ‘I said Big Gulp’ but she has truly been rendered speechless. Mystery man over here has caught Veronica in a spider web of crushing. God, it’s embarrassing. And they don’t even know each other’s names.

“You’re awfully quiet, darling,” the trench coat boy points out, and Veronica melts at the nickname.

Ok. She needs to figure out what the hell is going on here.

“Are you flirting with me or is this some kind of sick joke to you?”

The question comes out a little more aggressively than she intended, but it gets the point across.

The mullet boy tilts his head. “That depends. Can I flirt with a girl whose name I don’t know?”

Veronica can’t help but chuckle at that. Alright, he’s serious. “Veronica Sawyer,” she announces. “There. Now you know my name. Does that make this flirting, or does the name-knowing need to be mutual?”

The boy mouths her name a few times, like he’s testing it out. A smile creeps onto his face that, to the average person, would seem creepy, but to Veronica it’s charming. “I suppose we ought to find out, huh? It’s Jason Dean. J.D. for short.”

J.D. Just two letters and Veronica is already head over heels for this tall dark and handsome new kid.

J.D. plants his elbow on the counter next to the slurpee machine and lays his chin on his hand. He gazes at Veronica like she’s a painting in the Louvre. The tan skin of her face develops a rosy tint and she smiles, her stupid goofy wide smile that Chandler constantly reminds her is ‘horribly imperfect.’

“People don’t usually look at me like that,” Veronica mutters matter-of-factly. J.D. narrows his eyes and his smile spreads, but it’s not alarming or creepy. It’s goofy, like hers.

People are missing out,” J.D. hums. “I’ve been through ten high schools and I can easily confirm that you are undoubtedly the most beautiful human being I have ever seen.”

Ten high schools. Huh. “Do you say that to every girl you flirt with?” Veronica tries to mask her flustered internal monologue screaming with a witty comment, but the growing blush on her face doesn’t hide anything.

J.D. scoffs and leans closer to her. “Can’t say I’ve done this before. One minute I think I’m incapable of feeling anything remotely romantic and then bam, Veronica Sawyer walks into the room.” His eyes soften and he takes a sip from his slurpee. “I’m awfully inexperienced in the romance department.”

“You’re doing a pretty good job,” the girl in blue says with a giggle. “Could be better, though.”

J.D. barks a laugh and stands up straight, crossing his arms. “Better? I think I’ve done plenty. I’m very observant, darling. From what I can see, you’re pretty much done for.”

The blush comes back in a warmth flash across her face and Veronica literally feels her entire body sweat. She pulls up the sleeves of her blazer and J.D. giggles. Shit. He saw that.

“Need something to cool you down?” He smirks at her before offering his half-finished slurpee.

Oh, shut up, she thinks before yanking the slurpee out of his hand and loudly gulping down as much of the frozen sugar juice as possible. The brain freeze hits her like a truck and she grunts and seethes, earning a giggle from J.D.

“Alright, trench coat guy,” Veronica blurts out, recovering from her brain freeze. “Spit it out. What are you trying to achieve here?”

At that, J.D.’s cocky demeanor shifts to something much more innocent and wholesome. His eyes widen and he leans on one leg.

“How about a date with the most beautiful girl in Sherwood?” He says this with such genuine want and hope in his voice. Like he had just handed her a bouquet of flowers instead of a sugary beverage.

But luckily, what J.D. seeks also happens to be exactly what Veronica was hoping for.

Her eyes run along his entire figure, noting his tall, dark and handsome demeanor that contrasts the softness in his voice. “And where’s your ideal date? In a dungeon?”

“Judging a book by its cover, huh?” The mullet boy chuckles and takes a step closer to Veronica. “Not exactly what I had in mind, but if you’re into that I’d be willing to shift things around…”

Veronica blushes. Hard. “No! I mean…I don’t…oh, goddamnit. Look at what you’re doing to me.” She sharply sighs and J.D. grins at her like the Cheshire Cat. “What did you have in mind?”

The trench coat boy shrugs and tilts his head. “Got any interest in mini golf?”

Okay. So this guy is meant for her.

“I’ll crush you,” the girl in blue points out.

J.D. raises an eyebrow. “You’re, on, darling.”

She’s about to make a witty comment before Heather storms into the 7/11, demanding her corn nuts and yelling at Veronica to leave.

“Wave bye-bye to Red Dawn here and let’s motor.”

Heather storms back out of the store and Veronica slowly follows after her, before turning back to face J.D.

“So I’ll see you…”

“Tomorrow, 3pm. I’ll pick you up. Assuming you don’t have any problem on a bike, that is.” He puts his hands on his hips and smirks. Veronica wants to question him more, but she knows she doesn’t have any more time.

Instead, she reaches her hand out to shake his, like an agreement between two businessmen. J.D. takes her hand, but instead of shaking it, he brings it to his mouth and presses a kiss on her knuckles.

Okay, yeah. Veronica is done for.
