Chapter 1
Run

Water splashed as the woman ran through the streets of Nimaba city. A brief case clutched to her chest as she did. The black dress was restricting her to run as fast as she could. The lights from the buildings made the ground look like a mirror. It made it look so much brighter than it was.

Running into a full bar she ran through, looking over her shoulder seeing a group of men in suits. They kept demanding that people move, as if they would. The music was loud, and the body of people that swayed to the loud music. The woman turned around and ran out the back door into the alleyway where it was now raining again. She couldn’t stop though, she had to keep running as she clutched the suitcase to her.

She once again turned to make sure she wasn’t spotted as she ran out of the alleyway and crashed into someone. She gasped as she lost hold of the suitcase as she did. She looked at the man wearing black as she scrambled to her feet. Plucking up her suitcase as she did. She backed down another alleyway. The man in black was helped up by his brother as he watched the girl frantically run down the alleyway.

“Why was she in such a hurry?” He wondered out loud only to be blind sided by a group of men who ran down the alleyway after her.

“Theif perhaps? She was holding that suitcase like it was a life line.” The other said.

To their horror the sound of gunshots echoed down the alleyway, the bright flash of the ignition caught their attention as they grabbed their work suitcases and ran down the alleyway toward where they saw the woman. To their horror the woman lay there in a puddle of blood. The suitcase was gone, and the men were nowhere to be seen.

“We best contact Officer Jenny.” the one in black said as he pulled out his cell phone.

It didn’t take too long for the officer to show up with a few paramedics to confirm the young woman was in fact dead.

“And you are sure you can identify the assailants, Ingo?” The officer asked for her pen and notebook in hand.

“There were three of them, one with sandy blond hair, a blue suit and grey tie, the second one had ash colored hair and a tan suit, the third one had a similar suit to the first, but black curly hair.” Ingo said as he looked around seeing Emmet talking to the paramedics as his suit was torn from his fall with the young woman.

“Emmet?” Ingo called, the younger brother looked up as the paramedic put a bandaid on his elbow.

“I’m alright, just a flesh wound. They wanted to clean it out anyway. Make a damage report for my uniform.” he said looking through the tear on his jacket and then his shirt.”Big boss ain’t going to be too happy about it.” Ingo said. Their boss was the head of the cabinet of transportation. The one who signs their pay checks. She was a harsh woman to deal with.

“Alright boys, if we have any further questions we’ll go to the subway.” Officer Jenny clicked her pen and stowed it in her pocket.

Ingo and Emmet began to make their way back home, it wasn’t too far from where they were. A small apartment above a cafe. In the mornings their home smelled of coffee and donuts. They didn’t argue since they got free coffee.

As they went up the steps into their small apartment. Taking off their jackets, hats, and shoes they walked in hearing the soft pitterpats of the rain as it hit the window on the other side of their small christmas tree.

“Alright we should do our end of the week reports.” Ingo said as he opened his briefcase walking over to the table as Emmet put a kettle on the stove. The soft tick of the gas stove as he turned it on. They could hear the Christmas music from somewhere down below in the street. The rain turned into snow by the time the kettle whistled and Emmet sat down with a tray of tea, and cookies.

He opened his briefcase and looked inside. He gasped as realization clicked into place. He turned to look at Ingo who sipped his hot tea, before registering that his brother was looking shocked, scared, but above all else…surprised.

“Whats the matter? Our weekly report should be good. People have been riding the subway more now that it's cold. What's wrong?” He asked looking into his briefcase fully expecting to see a decline in numbers.

What he saw was four tiny dolls of them. A small paper with instructions, and a small picture drawn by a child.

“This isn’t good Ingo…” Emmet ran his fingers over his face. “Our bag was snatched by that woman in an accident and the person that killed her has my paperwork.” Emmet said.

Of course Emmet was angry about that, but of course Ingo thought of something far more sinister about this.

“Yes, that is true…but there is something about these dolls…that prompted those men to kill her. What was so important about them that would result in someone killing someone else about it.

Emmet's anger simmered down and they both looked at the dolls. He reached out, picked up the piece of paper and read it. “Take the dolls here…” He looked at the address. “Knock on the door four times…we’ll give you what you want for the dolls.”

Ingo looked surprised. “So if she gave these dolls to the people at that…address…she’d likely get…money or…worse.” He said looking up at his brother who looked shocked again.

“This isn’t good…what now?” Emmet asked. Ingo stood up walking over to his jacket.

“Obviously we’re going to go get your paper work lest you lose your job.” Ingo said, running his fingers over his suit. “Come on then…”
