Work Header

Reservations of Standing Together

Summary:

A night meant for catching up with friends turns into something more. Something no one expected.

Notes:

Ngl, this is one of my favorite parts of this series so far. I’m a sucker for unhinged friend groups — the kind that tease relentlessly, clock everything immediately, and still show up when it matters. Writing them feels like sitting at a table where everyone knows your tells and loves you anyway.

Also… they make me miss my own friends a little less 🥺🥹🫠
(Or maybe more. But in a good way.)

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

The message comes in while Nani is curled on Sky’s couch, legs tucked beneath him, socked feet pressed into the cushion like he belongs there. His phone rests lazily against his knee, attention drifting between the screen and the quiet comfort of Sky’s space.

Sky is by the window, sleeves rolled down, city light catching along the sharp line of his jaw. One hand rests in his pocket. The other taps once, absently, against the glass.

Nani’s phone vibrates again. A new group chat blinks into existence.

Bright added Win, Sky, Nani, Dew, Tee, Tay, New

Bright:
okay listen
this feels overdue
we’ve all been pretending we don’t orbit the same people and that feels dishonest

Tay:
also we have not all met up since sky + nani became a Thing 😌

New:
Correction.
Since they became official.

Win:
I was wondering how long we’d keep ignoring that.

Dew:
WAIT
this is a real group chat??

Tee:
I thought we were just going to keep liking each other’s stories aggressively and never address it

Nani:
Hey 😅
Aggressively is accurate

Bright:
drinks tonight
club near the river
come if you can, no pressure

Tay:
“no pressure” he says
after creating a brand new group chat

New:
That’s still pressure, Tay.
Just socially acceptable pressure.

Sky:
What time?

The chat goes quiet for a beat.

Bright:
see
already committed 😌

Win:
Miracles really do happen.

Dew:
I’m in
I want to see this guy everyone keeps talking about

Tee:
Same
also I refuse to let Dew meet Sky without supervision

Nani:
I feel very supervised right now 😭

Tay:
Sky.
Since this is technically a celebration of you finally getting your dream man—

New:
Your long-term emotional fixation—

Bright:
Your extremely obvious crush—

Win:
You’re paying.

Sky:

I did not agree to that.

New:
You agreed when you fell in love.

Bright:
I don’t make the rules 😌

Win:
You literally just did.

Sky:
Fine.
First round on me.

Tay:
Wow.

New:
True love really does soften people.

Nani:
I’ll help pay 🥺

Sky:
You will not.

Nani:
Sky 😭

Sky:
Second round too.

Dew:
Oh
I like him already

Tee:
Same

Bright:
okay
tonight then

The chat settles. Not awkward. Just… decided.

Nani lowers his phone, something gentle and steady unfolding in his chest. He looks up to find Sky already watching him, expression calm, open.

“Bright made a new group,” Nani says, unnecessarily. “I think we’re being socially integrated.”

Sky steps away from the window, crossing the room with unhurried ease. “Good.”

Nani tilts his head. “That’s it?”

“That’s it.”

A beat.

“You’re really okay with this?” Nani asks, softer now. Not a test. Just a check.

Sky stops in front of him. Close enough that Nani has to lean back slightly to meet his eyes. “Why wouldn’t I be?”

“It’s a lot,” Nani admits. “Mixing our friends.”

Sky doesn’t rush to answer. When he does, his voice is even, certain. “You don’t have to manage that alone.”

The words settle, not heavy, not dramatic. Just true.

Nani exhales, tension slipping free without him realizing it had been there. “Okay,” he says, smiling. “Then… okay.”

Sky’s hand drops briefly, thumb brushing once along Nani’s knee. A quiet, grounding touch before he straightens. “What time?” Sky asks.

Nani checks his phone. “In an hour.”

Sky nods. “We’ll go together.”

Not I’ll come with you. Not I’ll meet you there.

Together.

Nani’s smile softens. “Yeah. Together.”

Outside, the city keeps moving. Loud. Indifferent. Unaware.

Inside, something widens — carefully, deliberately.

Not a test. Not a challenge. Just a circle expanding. And holding.

They arrive together. Not rushed. Not late. Not trying to make an entrance.

Sky steps out first, holding the door open as Nani slides out beside him. They’re dressed differently — and somehow exactly the same. Sky in dark tones, clean lines. Black jacket, sharp shoulders, everything deliberate and understated. Nani in softer colors, lighter fabric, something that moves when he does.

But the details align. The same muted silver at their wrists. A shared shade threaded through their shirts. The kind of coordination that isn’t planned loudly — just noticed.

Sky’s hand settles briefly at the small of Nani’s back as they head inside. Not guiding. Not claiming. Just there.

The bar is already alive with noise. Warm lights. Low music. Glass panels opening out to the river, city reflections rippling like something breathing.

Bright spots them first, mid-sentence, drink halfway to his mouth. He stops. Win follows his line of sight. They exchange a look.

Nani lifts a hand in greeting, a little tentative but smiling. “Hey.”

Bright’s grin blooms slow and unmistakable. “Wow.”

Win nudges him lightly. “Be normal.”

“I am being normal,” Bright says, eyes flicking shamelessly between Sky and Nani. “I’m just… appreciating my work.”

Nani blinks. “Your—?”

“Our work,” Win corrects mildly.

Sky exhales. “You set up one date.”

Bright gasps. “The first date.”

“And look where we are now,” Win adds, pleased.

Nani’s smile grows warmer at that, even as his cheeks heat.

Tay clocks them next. His gaze sweeps Sky, then Nani, then the subtle way Sky angles half a step closer when someone brushes past. He lifts his glass in greeting, amusement softening his expression.

“So,” Tay says to Nani, “you’re that Nani.”

Nani laughs, a little nervous. “I think so?”

New smiles immediately — warm, open, and assessing all at once. “We’ve heard a lot about you.”

Sky shoots him a look. “You promised.”

“I promised not to embarrass you,” New replies calmly. “Not to lie.”

Nani feels his face warm despite himself.

Dew and Tee approach from the opposite side of the room, still mid-argument about something utterly inconsequential.

“I’m telling you—” Dew starts, then stops short when he sees Nani. His face lights up. “Oh! Hey!”

Nani brightens instantly. “Hey!”

Tee’s attention lands on Sky. It lingers. Not suspicious. Just… measuring. Sky meets his gaze without flinching. Holds it. Then inclines his head once. Polite. Direct. That’s all it takes. Tee’s shoulders ease. His mouth quirks faintly. Approval given without ceremony.

“So you’re Sky,” Dew says, openly curious.

Sky nods. “You must be Dew.”

“And Tee,” Tee adds, gesturing between them. “We’ve heard… things.”

Sky glances at Nani, calm but faintly amused. “Only good ones, I hope.”

Nani groans softly. “Please don’t.”

Dew’s grin turns wicked. “He blushes really easily.”

“That is not true,” Nani says — already pink.

Tee hums. “It kind of is.”

They move toward the table together. Sky pulls out a chair for Nani without thinking, fingers brushing his wrist as he does. Nani smiles up at him — small, fond, completely unguarded — before sitting.

Conversation resumes, but it subtly rearranges itself around them. No one crowds Nani. No one pretends not to understand what they’re seeing.

Bright leans back, eyes glittering. “So.”

Sky meets his gaze. “So.”

Bright laughs. “You’re both extremely obvious.”

Nani ducks his head. “We are not.”

“You absolutely are,” Win says cheerfully.

Sky doesn’t deny it.

Win gestures toward the bar. “Drinks?”

“Yes, please,” Nani says easily.

Win flags the server as they pass. “We’ll take a round.”

Bright doesn’t even look up. “Whatever’s cold.”

“Beer,” Dew says.

Tee nods. “Same.”

“Gin and tonic,” Tay adds, glancing at New. “For both of us.”

New hums in agreement. “Make it strong.”

The server’s pen moves quickly, eyes flicking around the table.

“I’ll have a whiskey,” Sky says when they look his way — then, without pause, “and a passionfruit spritz.”

The server nods, finishing the order, and moves on.

Nani blinks. “Sky—”

Sky glances at him, calm, faintly amused. “What?”

Nani presses his lips together, cheeks warm, and lets it go.

Tay arches an eyebrow slowly. “You don’t drink fruity drinks.”

Sky doesn’t even look at him. “I know.”

Before Sky can elaborate, Tee speaks up, tone casual, observational. “That’s Nani’s favorite.”

The table stills for half a second.

Nani’s face goes red instantly. “I—” He stops, exhales. “…Yeah.” He doesn’t deny it.

Bright’s grin spreads. “Oh, that’s bad.”

Win laughs. “You didn’t even ask.”

Sky finally glances down at Nani, expression calm, faintly smug. “I didn’t need to.”

Nani presses his lips together, mortified. Too late to recover. His fingers are already tracing the ink along Sky’s forearm where his sleeve has ridden up. Thumb following a line, then circling another — unconscious, familiar. He leans in closer without realizing it.

Across the table, Dew watches, then elbows Tee. “Told you.”

“Told me what?” Tee murmurs.

“That Nani’s gone,” Dew says. “Completely.”

Sky hears it. He doesn’t respond. He doesn’t need to.

After a while, Bright squints across the table, interest sharpening. “Okay. Hold on.”

Nani looks up warily. “What?”

Bright gestures vaguely between him and Sky. “That.”

“That what?” Nani asks.

Win leans back, amused. “You’ve been touching Sky for the last five minutes.”

Nani freezes. He looks down. His fingers are still curled around Sky’s forearm.

“Oh.” Heat floods his face. “I didn’t even realize—”

Sky doesn’t pull away. If anything, he turns his arm slightly, making it easier. Nani makes a small, mortified sound and tries to withdraw.

Sky catches his wrist gently. “You can.”

Nani hesitates — then lets his fingers settle again, cheeks burning.

Dew laughs softly. “Okay. That’s actually kind of adorable.”

Tee nods once. “You look comfortable.”

Nani ducks his head. “I am.”

Sky’s mouth curves — faint, unapologetic.

Tay lifts his glass toward Sky. “So this is what a few months of quiet pining turns into.”

Sky meets his gaze evenly. “Yes.”

New hums. “You’re not even pretending to care that we’re all watching.”

Sky shrugs. “I don’t.”

Nani groans quietly. “Sky, please.”

Sky glances at him, fond and utterly unrepentant. “They’re not wrong.”

Bright laughs. “Oh, he’s gone.”

Win corrects him. “They both are.”

Nani hides behind his drink, peeking over the rim, mortified but smiling anyway.

Sky’s thumb brushes once against Nani’s knuckles. Grounding. Intentional. No apology. No hesitation.

The teasing continues around them — light, curious, affectionate — and it’s clear now what everyone is reacting to. Not history. Not gossip.

Just what’s unfolding right in front of them.

-

Conversation loosens as time moves along. The table settles into an easy hum — overlapping voices, clinking glasses, laughter folding back on itself. Comfortable noise. Familiar rhythm. The kind that makes it easy to forget where one voice ends and another begins.

Nani doesn’t forget.

He feels it in the way Bright’s gaze keeps drifting back to him and Sky, bright with too much satisfaction. In the way Dew smiles mid-sentence when he catches sight of them leaning together. In the way Tay watches quietly, like he’s cataloguing details for future use.

Nani shifts in his seat, shoulder brushing Sky’s arm. Sky doesn’t move away. If anything, he shifts closer, one arm settling easily over Nani’s shoulders, warm and solid, like it’s always been there. Nani stiffens for half a second. Then relaxes. He leans in, lowering his voice. “People are staring.”

Sky glances around once — lazy, unimpressed — then looks back at him. “They’ll survive.”

Nani’s ears burn. “Sky.”

Sky hums, clearly unbothered.

Across the table, Bright clinks his glass against Win’s. “We set them up once,” he says proudly, “and now look at this.”

Win smiles, amused. “Art.”

Tay lifts his glass slightly, eyes flicking between Sky’s arm and Nani tucked comfortably into his side. “You’re not even pretending anymore.”

Sky doesn’t bother denying it.

New watches the exchange with a soft, knowing smile. “He warned us this would happen.”

“I did not,” Sky says.

New raises an eyebrow. “You absolutely did.”

Dew laughs. “Honestly? I respect it.”

Tee nods once. “Same.”

Nani hides behind his glass, peeking over the rim, cheeks still warm. “I’m right here,” he mutters.

“And glowing,” Bright adds cheerfully.

Sky’s arm tightens just a fraction, thumb brushing once against Nani’s shoulder. Grounding. Casual. Intentional. Nani leans back into him without thinking. Sky lets him.

The teasing keeps flowing around them — light, affectionate, relentless — but Nani barely hears it now. He’s too aware of Sky’s presence, the steady weight of his arm, the ease with which Sky holds him like this in front of everyone.

And somehow, instead of wanting to disappear, Nani finds himself staying exactly where he is. Right there. With Sky.

-

Drinks are refilled. Again.

The edge of the night softens — voices a little louder, laughter easier, sentences slipping out before anyone thinks too hard about them. The table settles into a familiar hum, teasing and warmth weaving together until it’s hard to tell where one ends and the other begins.

Nani feels it before anyone says anything. The attention. Not sharp. Not invasive. Just… curious. Watching.

He shifts slightly in his seat, shoulder brushing Sky’s arm. Sky doesn’t move away. If anything, he settles closer — solid, unbothered, like the world beyond the table doesn’t exist.

Bright leans back in his chair, drink sloshing dangerously close to the rim. “Okay,” he announces, slurring slightly. “Since we’re all apparently being honest tonight — and we do have the newest couple here.”

Win sighs, already bracing. “Oh no.”

“Oh yes,” Bright says, pointing between Sky and Nani. “You two. Have you kissed yet?”

Nani chokes.

Sky answers immediately. “Yes.” Too fast. Too calm.

Nani turns scarlet. “Sky!”

Win laughs. “Where?”

“At my place,” Sky replies without hesitation.

Tay whistles low. “Bold.”

New tilts his head, curiosity sharpening. “When was this?”

“A few days ago,” Sky says. Then, without hesitation, “Eleven.”

There’s a brief pause.

Win blinks. “You counted.”

Bright squints at him. “You remember the exact day.”

Sky glances at them, faintly amused. “Of course.”

Nani covers his face. “You’re not supposed to answer everything.”

Sky looks at him instead, tone calm. “It matters.”

Dew grins. “Okay, follow-up.”

Tee leans in just enough to be dangerous. “Have you had sex yet?”

Nani makes a sound that is not a word.

Sky takes a slow sip of his drink. “That’s private.”

Nani exhales sharply in relief.

Tay smirks. “That’s not a no.”

Bright’s eyes light up. “Oh my—”

Win rubs his face. “Please stop encouraging him.”

“But I haven’t even started,” Bright protests, waving his glass. “You’re all acting like Sky woke up one morning and suddenly decided to fall in love.”

Nani tilts his head. “Wait—what?”

Bright laughs, delighted. “Oh you still don't know? This was brewing. Quietly. Painfully.”

Sky’s head turns slowly. “Bright.”

Bright points at him without missing a beat. “You don’t get to stop me now.”

Win mutters, “He’s drunk.”

“And truthful,” Bright counters easily, eyes sliding back to Nani. “Do you know how long he liked you before that first date?”

Nani blinks. “How long?”

Sky says flatly, “Bright.”

Bright grins. “Four months.”

The words hang there.

Nani turns slowly to Sky. “Four months?”

“Before your restaurant date,” Bright adds helpfully. “He saw you at a club with us. Love at first sight. Would not shut up about it afterward.”

The table goes quiet — not shocked, exactly, but suddenly attentive.

Nani’s voice comes out softer than he expects. “You never told me that.”

Sky meets his gaze, steady and unapologetic. “You didn’t ask.”

Something warm and heavy settles in Nani’s chest.

Tay exhales, impressed. “That’s… intense.”

New hums. “Quietly unhinged.”

Sky accepts both assessments without comment but with a slight smug smirk.

New turns back to Nani, smirk sharpening. “Okay, then. Sky definitely wasn’t your first kiss. So — who was?”

Nani’s eyes widen instantly. “I am not answering that.”

“Oh yes,” Bright says without hesitation. “You absolutely are.”

Tay’s grin turns lazy, almost thoughtful. “You really shouldn’t tell Sky.”

Nani frowns. “Why?”

Tay flicks a glance toward Sky. “Because he’ll smile about it.”

A beat.

“And then,” Tay adds lightly, “that person will mysteriously vanish.”

Laughter breaks out around the table. Sky doesn’t laugh. He doesn’t even smile. He’s still holding Nani’s hand, thumb resting warm against his knuckles, but his grip tightens just enough to be felt. His gaze drops for a second — not to Nani — but to nothing at all, like his mind has already gone somewhere unpleasant.

When he looks back up, his expression is calm again. Too calm. “Whoever it was,” Sky says evenly, “they don’t matter.” The way he says it makes the word matter feel temporary.

Nani swallows. “…I’m not telling,” he says quietly.

Sky’s mouth curves — not soft, not warm — but satisfied. “Good choice.”

The laughter resumes, louder now, but something electric hums beneath it.

Nani leans closer to Sky, fingers curling into his sleeve. Sky lets him, thumb brushing once against Nani’s knuckles — grounding, sure.

Bright lifts his glass. “To unhinged romance.”

Win clinks his against it. “And bad decisions.”

Nani mutters, still pink, “You’re all terrible.”

Sky presses a brief kiss to his temple, right there at the table, like it’s nothing. “Maybe,” he says quietly. “But you’re mine.”

Nani melts.

And everyone pretends not to notice.

-

The table is mid-laughter when Nani shifts in his seat. It’s subtle — a glance toward the corridor, a small adjustment of his glass — the kind of movement most people would miss. Sky doesn’t.

“I’m going to use the washroom,” Nani says, tone casual, angled toward Sky but loud enough for the table to hear.

Sky nods and moves without thinking. His chair scrapes softly as he starts to stand. New’s hand lands lightly on his forearm. Sky pauses, caught mid-motion, blinking once as if he’s only just realized what he’s doing.

Tee straightens at the same time, pushing his chair back. “We need to go too.”

Nani looks between them, surprised. “You do?”

New rises to his feet, expression easy, diplomatic. “I was going to anyway.” He gestures loosely between himself and Tee. “Might as well go together.”

Sky remains half-standing, attention flicking briefly to Nani. There’s a question there — not permission, not control. Just awareness. Are you okay with this?

Nani answers it with a smile. Easy. Reassuring. “I’ll be fine.”

Sky hesitates — only a fraction of a second longer than necessary. Then he sits back down. “Alright,” he says.

New gives a small nod, approving without making a show of it. “I'll take care of him.”

Sky exhales quietly, something like relief flickering across his face.

Dew watches the exchange with open curiosity. Tay lifts an eyebrow, already filing it away for later.

Nani stands, brushing Sky’s shoulder as he does. Brief. Intentional. A soft I’ll be back without words. Sky’s hand lifts instinctively, fingers ghosting the air where Nani had been — then he catches himself and lets it drop.

“Don’t steal him,” Sky says dryly to New.

New smiles. “No promises.”

Tee snorts, already turning toward the corridor. “We’re literally just going to pee.”

“Speak for yourself,” New replies.

Nani laughs as they walk away, the sound trailing behind them.

Sky watches until they disappear from view. Not tense. Just… aware.

At the table, Bright leans in slightly. “You’re doing great, by the way.”

Sky doesn’t look at him. “I know.”

Win smirks. “He really does.”

The noise of the bar swells back around them. Sky takes a slow sip of his drink, gaze still angled toward the hallway. Waiting. Not because he has to. Because he wants to.

-

The bathroom is crowded. Music thuds faintly through the walls, bass vibrating through tile and mirror, the air thick with perfume and alcohol. Nani steps up to the sink, turning on the tap and letting cool water rush over his hands. Grounding. Familiar.

Tee leans against the counter beside him, posture loose but present. New stands at the mirror, fixing his hair with the practiced ease of someone who’s done this a hundred times and never quite stopped caring how he looks.

They’re laughing about something — Dew, probably — when the door swings open. The man stumbles in like he owns the space. Too loud. Too close. Too drunk.

Nani stiffens instantly, shoulders drawing in before he can stop himself.

“Hey,” the man slurs, grin crooked, eyes lingering far too long. “You’re pretty.”

The smile Nani gives him comes automatically. Polite. Reflexive. A muscle memory honed over years. “Thanks,” he says.

The man steps closer. New straightens at once. Tee’s posture shifts too — not aggressive, just alert, his body angling subtly into Nani’s space.

“Didn’t know this was a private party,” the guy adds, gaze flicking between them before settling back on Nani. “You here alone?”

“No,” New says flatly.

The man laughs, wavering. “Didn’t ask you.”

Tee steps forward, just enough to break the distance. His voice is calm. Even. “You should go.”

The man looks at him. Then at New. Something clicks — not fear, exactly, but the realization that he’s outnumbered, and that none of them are impressed. He scoffs. “Relax. Just talking.”

“Go,” Tee repeats.

The silence stretches, heavy and unmistakable.

The man hesitates, then lifts his hands in mock surrender. “Whatever.” He stumbles back out, muttering under his breath as the door swings shut behind him.

The noise of the bar rushes back in.

Nani exhales, breath shaky now that he realizes he’d been holding it. His fingers tighten briefly around the edge of the sink.

New turns to him immediately. “You okay?”

Nani nods too fast. “Yeah. He didn’t— he just—” He stops, frustration flickering across his face. “It was nothing.”

“I know,” New says gently. “Still.”

Tee watches him for a moment longer, not pressing, just making sure. Then he nods once. “Let’s go back.”

Nani turns off the tap, drying his hands more slowly this time. They leave together.

-

The table comes back into focus. Laughter. Glasses. Familiar faces. The low, steady hum of a night that thinks it’s still uncomplicated.

Sky looks up the moment Nani reappears. He knows. Not because Nani looks shaken — the smile is still there, still polite — but because something in his posture is just a fraction too careful. Shoulders held a touch too still. Movements measured where they’re usually easy.

Sky’s attention sharpens instantly. “You okay?” he asks, already halfway out of his chair.

Nani nods. “Yeah.” He doesn’t offer more.

Sky’s hand is already at his waist, steadying him as he comes closer — not pulling, not crowding. Just anchoring. Sky doesn’t push.

New does.

“There was a guy in the bathroom,” New says evenly. No drama. No embellishment. “Drunk. He tried to flirt with Nani.”

The air shifts. Not loudly. Not visibly. But Sky’s gaze darkens — a focused, deliberate stillness settling in, like something dangerous being locked down instead of let loose.

Dew notices. Tay notices. Bright notices the way Sky’s jaw tightens, the way his hand curls once against Nani’s back before relaxing again.

Nani doesn’t. He's still reeling from the encounter.

Sky doesn’t look away from him. “Did he touch you?” Sky asks, voice level. Controlled.

“No,” Nani says immediately. “He backed off after seeing P'New and Tee.”

Sky studies him for a beat longer than necessary — not searching for reassurance, but for truth. “Are you alright?” he asks again, quieter now.

Nani hesitates — just a fraction — then nods. “I am.”

That’s enough for now for Sky. He exhales slowly, then pulls Nani in without warning — not hard, not desperate. Just close. One arm firm around his back, the other resting between his shoulders.

Nani stiffens for half a second. Then melts. Sky presses his forehead briefly to Nani’s hair, a grounding point, a promise spoken without words. His mouth brushes Nani’s temple — not a kiss meant to be seen, just reassurance.

“You didn’t do anything wrong,” Sky murmurs, too low for the table to hear.

Nani nods against him, still catching up to the fact that his hands are trembling. Sky straightens. Reaches for his jacket. “We’re leaving,” he says. Not angry. Not raised. Decided.

Bright opens his mouth — then closes it again. Win is already on his feet. Dew and Tee rise without question. Tay catches New’s eye and gives a single, sharp nod.

Sky’s hand finds Nani’s — firm, steady, unmistakably there — as they move toward the exit. Nani squeezes back without thinking. Relief blooms warm and sudden in his chest. Not because Sky is taking control. Because he doesn’t have to ask.

Behind them, the music keeps playing. Glasses clink. Laughter continues, oblivious.

Ahead of them, the night waits.

And somewhere between the table and the door, Sky’s restraint tightens — not to fracture, not to explode — but to act.

-

They don’t make it to the parking. The night hits cool and sharp as they step onto the pavement, river glinting dark a short distance away. The noise of the bar dulls behind them, replaced by traffic, distant laughter, the scrape of shoes on concrete.

Sky’s hand stays at the small of Nani’s back. Not urgent. Not pulling. Just there.

They’re halfway to the curb when laughter breaks behind them — loud, ugly, unmistakably familiar. “Well, would you look at that.”

Sky slows. Not stops. Just enough. Tay feels it immediately. Dew’s shoulders tighten. Tee’s hand curls reflexively at his side. They turn together.

It’s the guy from the bathroom. Or one of his friends. It hardly matters. There are three of them now, swaying slightly, emboldened by alcohol and numbers and the dangerous assumption that this is still a joke.

“Didn’t mean to scare you in there,” the guy says, eyes sliding back to Nani. “Was just being friendly.”

Nani stiffens. Sky steps half a pace forward without looking back. “Walk away,” Sky says. His voice is calm. Almost bored.

The man laughs. “Relax, man. We’re just talking.”

“No,” Tay says flatly. “You’re done.”

One of the others scoffs, stepping closer. “Or what?”

That’s the moment. Not because it’s a threat — but because it confirms exactly what Sky already assessed. The line is crossed when one of them drifts too close to Tee.

Dew moves instantly. Not swinging. Not shouting. He blocks the space, palm firm against the man’s chest. The drunk shoves back.

Everything fractures into motion.

Tay intercepts the next swing before it lands, redirecting it sharply and sending the man staggering sideways. Sky moves with ruthless efficiency — fingers locking around a wrist, twisting just enough, momentum redirected into a controlled shove that puts the bathroom guy flat on the pavement, breath punched clean out of him. No wild punches. No posturing. Just force applied where it counts. Someone yells. Security shouts from the door. A bottle clatters to the ground and shatters.

Sky is already stepping back. He straightens his jacket like nothing happened.

The men are on the ground now — groaning, stunned, the fight over before it ever fully ignites.

Sky turns immediately. “Nani.”

Nani’s pulse is loud in his ears, adrenaline humming sharp and electric — but he’s untouched. Sky cups his jaw gently, thumb brushing once beneath his cheekbone, grounding him back into himself. “Are you hurt?”

Nani shakes his head. “No.”

Sky exhales. Slow. Controlled. Then his hand drops.

Tay checks New. Dew checks Tee. All clear.

Security floods the space, voices urgent and apologetic. The drunk men start protesting, words slurring over one another — until Sky lifts a hand. Not raised. Not sharp. Just enough. The noise falters. Then stops.

Sky turns his attention to the manager who’s rushed out, breathless and pale, clearly trying to decide how much deference is appropriate — and then deciding not to risk it.

“These men,” Sky says evenly, indicating them with a glance, “are not welcome back.”

The manager nods immediately. “Of course, khun.”

Sky’s gaze doesn’t soften. If anything, it sharpens — precise, assessing. “In any establishment.”

There’s a pause. A flicker of calculation and recognition passes over the manager’s face. Then he nods again, faster this time. “Understood, khun.”

Dew notices. So does Tee. They exchange a look with each other but they don’t comment. They simply file it away — the speed of compliance, the absence of argument, the way the manager doesn’t ask a single clarifying question.

Nani heard but didn't really process it. The weight of Sky’s words registers — the ease of it, the certainty — but his mind slides past it, tucking the thought somewhere distant and indistinct. Background noise to the steadier presence at his side.

The men on the ground don’t seem to realize what just happened. Not really. Not yet.

Sky doesn’t wait for them to. He turns back to Nani, his hand returning to the small of Nani’s back — familiar, steady, grounding. “Let’s go,” Sky says. Not an order. An assurance.

They walk away together, the night swallowing the incident behind them — contained, controlled, finished.

Nani glances up at Sky, adrenaline still buzzing under his skin. “You didn’t even hesitate,” he murmurs.

Sky keeps his eyes forward, jaw set. “When it comes to you,” he says calmly. “I won’t.”

Nani’s fingers tighten briefly in Sky’s sleeve. He understands. And he stays.

-

For a moment, no one speaks. Then Win exhales slowly. “Everyone still okay?”

Bright lets out a breathy, disbelieving laugh. “Define okay.”

New is already checking Tay with practiced efficiency, fingers brushing his arm, his shoulder, his side. “You hurt?”

Tay shakes his head. “I’m fine.” He hesitates, then asks, quieter, “You?”

New nods once. “Yeah.”

Dew has both hands on Tee’s shoulders, eyes scanning his face with open concern. “You sure you’re okay?”

Tee huffs, still a little breathless but steady. “I’m fine. You blocked him before I even realized what was happening.”

Dew’s smile flashes quick and unguarded, relief plain on his face. “Yeah. Guess I’m good at that.”

Tee snorts softly. “Apparently.”

A few feet away, Nani stands slightly apart, fingers still curled into the fabric of Sky’s jacket. He doesn’t realize he’s holding on until Sky shifts closer, angling his body so Nani is shielded from the street — not boxed in, just… covered.

Sky looks down at him. “Talk to me.”

Nani swallows. “I’m okay,” he says honestly. “Just… startled.”

Sky nods once, accepting it without question. His hand comes up briefly, resting at the nape of Nani’s neck — warm, grounding — then drops again.

“You did nothing wrong,” Sky says, voice low and certain.

Nani looks up at him. His expression softens. “I know.”

Bright watches them for a beat, then clears his throat. “Well. That was… not how I thought tonight would go.”

Win snorts. “You say that every time something happens.”

“Because something always happens,” Bright replies.

Tay glances around the group, taking stock, then says mildly, “Anyone want to call it?”

No one argues. There’s a collective nod, an unspoken agreement passing between them. Tonight has taken enough.

Sky reaches into his pocket, keys already in hand. “I’ll take Nani.”

Nani turns toward him instinctively, already aligned. “Okay.”

Dew squeezes Tee’s hand once. “Text when you get home?”

“We will,” Tay says.

Bright points at Sky, half-joking, half-serious. “You good?”

Sky meets his gaze evenly. “Yes.”

That seems to be enough. Goodbyes follow — softer now, slower — each couple peeling away into the night in their own direction.

Sky opens the car door for Nani. Nani slides in, glancing back once as Sky circles to the driver’s side. Everyone is safe. Everyone is accounted for.

The car pulls away, city lights stretching ahead of them like a quiet promise. Inside, the silence feels different — not tense, not heavy. Just full.

Nani exhales, settling back against the seat.

Sky glances over briefly. “Still okay?”

Nani nods, then smiles. “Yeah. Especially now.”

Sky returns his eyes to the road. His jaw unclenches.

The night finally lets them go.

---

The drive is quiet. Not awkward. Not strained. Just… full.

Streetlights slide across the windshield in slow, steady intervals, the city stretched thin and softened by distance. Nani sits with his hands folded loosely in his lap, adrenaline still humming beneath his skin, his shoulder brushing Sky’s every time the car turns.

Sky keeps one hand on the wheel, the other relaxed against Nani's thigh. He doesn’t speak until they ease into the underground parking of the penthouse.

“We’re here,” he says.

Nani just nods. Doesn't say anything.

The elevator ride is silent too — close, contained. Sky stands angled slightly toward him, not touching, but unmistakably present. Nani feels it anyway. The awareness. The restraint pulled tight, deliberate, holding.

The doors open. Sky’s place is dark except for the city spilling in through the floor-to-ceiling windows. He flicks on a low light, warm and indirect, then shrugs out of his jacket, setting it aside.

Nani exhales softly, the tension he’s been carrying all night finally loosening its grip.

“Come here,” Sky says. Not sharp. Not commanding. Just warm.

Nani does.

The moment he steps into Sky’s space, Sky’s hands are on him — firm at his waist, steady at his back — pulling him close without hesitation this time. The control is still there, but it’s thinner now, stretched taut by everything that didn’t get said, didn’t get done.

Sky leans down. The kiss is immediate. Deep. Intent. Nothing tentative about it.

Nani makes a soft sound against his mouth, fingers curling into Sky’s shirt as the leftover adrenaline tips into something warmer, heavier. Sky kisses him like he’s been waiting — like restraint was a choice, and this is the reward.

He breaks the kiss only to rest his forehead against Nani’s, breath uneven for the first time all night.

“Are you really okay?” Sky asks, voice low.

Nani smiles, dazed and certain. “I’m more than okay.”

That’s all it takes.

Sky kisses him again, slower now, hands moving with purpose as he guides Nani back step by step. The city blurs beyond the windows. The penthouse recedes. There’s only warmth, closeness, and the quiet certainty of what comes next.

The bedroom door closes behind them without a sound.
