« You love me though, come on!
« I think I might…

« You know one thing I truly regret ? »
Twirling her fingers in his hair, Keily was watching the ceiling absentmindedly, as they laid on her bed.
« Mhmh ? »
« Luke got your first kiss and not me. »
Keily got up on her elbows, pushing him from her stomach where he had laid his head.
« You douche ! How dare you be so sure it was my first kiss ? »
He raised his gaze toward her face, truly amused by her appalled expression, mouth open and eyebrows raised in disbelief. He smiled, teasing.
« Are you telling me it wasn’t ? »
She felt her cheeks becoming red and pushed his face with her hand. She fell back onto the bed, and said, avoiding his eyes :
« No you’re right… it was my first kiss »
Her heart skipped a beat hearing his warm laugh (it still got to her every time), as he rested his chin on her belly.
« But still, you’re an asshole »
« Oh, I know. » He poked her cheek. « But that’s why you love me. »
She laughed, turned to her side to look at him.
« If you hadn’t been such a jerk, you would have had that first kiss, you know ? At the party… » She gazed at him.
He looked at her with eagerness, mixed with melancholy, maybe a touch of guilt.
« That’s why I will always regret it. »
« Well… you can always make up for it. »
He smiled, got up on his elbow and leaned toward her, a she raised her face in his direction. Their lips met halfway, caressing each other. His hand brushed her hip, grasped her to make her come closer, as he deepened the kiss.
A moan escaped from Keily’s parted lips, he grinned against her mouth as she clung to his shirt.
« Dinner is ready ! »
The voice of Keily’s mother rose from the kitchen.
James groaned, throwing his head back.
« You’re such a drama queen… » laughed Keily.
They got up and smoothed their ruffled clothes, softened their hair, before heading to the dining table.
*****
Since they begun officially being « a couple » after Homecoming, James had been invited once a week to eat with Keily and her mom, as he was otherwise often (if not always) alone at home. Keily’s mom had been fond of James from day one, when he came to work on their group project. She didn’t know how much of a jerk he had been to her daughter, and James and Keily had agreed not to tell her, now that the situation had come to a resolution. These dinner were very enjoyable, lighthearted, James amusing his hosts with his (so charming) wit, Keily always finding a good repartee, and the food was delicious. This evening made no exception.
« The teachers are already talking about what we want to do next year, sighed Kelly
« Oh please don’t talk about that, that’s depressing !
« When do you have to make choices, asked her mom
« Not yet, but we have to look through college brochures… I don’t know if I want to focus on music, or literature… I also want to do journalism.
« You could totally be journalist ! You know, said James to her mother, her articles for the school paper were really good ! »
« Yeah, I read them… when I was picking up some copies from the floor… » She said, piercing them with an ominous gaze. She laughed : « working around kids is an everyday battle, truly. »
« I swear some of us are not that bad » wooed James.
« And you James, what do you plan to do ? »
He paused, his face closed suddenly.
« I don’t know yet. »
Keily’s mother looked at him, pensive, and said :
« … Well, you still have time to decide ! »

After dinner, Keily walked James to his car parked in front of her house.
He leaned against the car, facing her. After a month or so, she still wasn’t used to thinking of him as her boyfriend, and even if they spent so much time together, when he watched her with those eyes of his, with that teasing smile, she couldn’t help but blush and look away. She found him irresistible.
He found it adorable.
« Tonight was nice.
« As always.
« Drive safe.
« I know you secretly hope I run into a tree or something.
« Why do you even say that ? She gave him a death stare.
He raised his hands to his heart, tilting his head
« So you care about me ?
She smiled :
« You wish. » and her eyes said the exact opposite of her words. He caressed her face, playing with a streak of her hair, and leaned in to drop a kiss on her forehead, then on her lips.
« Good night, rockstar »
« Good night, handsome »
« Hey ! Stop calling me that ! »
Her smiled brightened
« Never ! »
He sighed, and slid into his car. As he was closing the door, she approached her face, requesting one last kiss.
Then she closed his door, and watched him drive away.
