Denial Much?

Summary:

Prompt:
"I think you're in love."
"What? No! How could that happen!?"

Notes:

So the version of Sleeping Beauty I was referring to is Giambattista Basile's version 'Sun, Moon, and Talia'.
Not really a for kid's version, but still interesting.

Work Text:

Prompt:
‎“I think you're in love.”
‎“What? No! How did that happen!?”

‎At first Briar was disgusted by the gifts.
‎Chocolate covered flies, smelly swamp grass bouquets, cringe love notes and utterly cheesy and overused pick up lines.

‎He's just like the other princes,
‎She told herself.
‎He's not destined for you anyway.

‎And Briar was a firm believer in destiny.

‎Key word: Was.

‎After thinking it through and very deeply and experiencing it a bit,
‎Briar's faith on destiny had stopped because of what she would have to sacrifice during her
‎100-year sleep.

‎She'd sacrifice her friends, family, anyone she ever knew, all for a random prince who'll kiss her awake and a happily ever after.

‎It was too much to give up.

‎She didn't tell this to just anyone,
‎Only a few certain people knew how she felt.
‎People like Ashlynn, Rosabella, C.A. Cupid...And Hopper.

‎Hopper wasn't her choice to be honest.

‎He accidentally stumbled upon her ranting in the Enchanted Forest late one night when she snuck out while he was in frog form.

‎Not the best way to tell a secret.

‎But he didn't mind.
‎He waited for her to be done talking for him to speak what he thought about it.

‎No pushing, pressuring, just his opinions that didn't even hurt.

‎That way they bonded over something else.

‎Originally, Sleeping Beauty was discovered by a king who decided to look around, a few months later, boom!
‎twins with one of them taking a splinter out of her finger and after that,
‎The king's wife decides to burn her alive to which of course she survives in.

‎The Frog Prince was not kissed by a princess, he was thrown into a wall which would kill him,
‎In some other versions, purposefully killed in order to break the curse on him.

‎So Hopper changed his gifts that he sent to her.

‎No longer the froggy stuff and completely cliche choices,
‎But with simple pieces of jewelry,
‎Books, and yes, the occasional flowers and love notes.

‎He would even write a few short songs.

‎Sweet guy.

‎And he would just give her a quick
‎"Hi" down the hall and...

‎"Briar? Are you okay?"

‎Ashlynn's voice cut through Briar's swimming thoughts.

‎The daughter of roses blinked once, twice to clear her head.

‎She wasn't exactly controlling her expressions though,
‎Briar realized she had been smiling through her haze. As seen by the twinkle in Ashlynn's eyes.

‎Being roommates help when it comes to the other's feelings about certain objects and people.

‎"Hopper again if I'm right," Ashlynn chuckled softly.
‎"Seriously Briar, stopped resisting it."

‎Said princess turned to look at the chuckling girl in front of her.

‎"What you are saying?"

‎"I think you're in love."

‎"What? No! How could that happen!?"

‎Giggles came from Ashlynn when Briar voiced out her “reaction” to her conclusion.

‎"Don't lie about it, and I am in a relationship myself."

‎She stood up, giving one more teasing look at her already irritated friend.

‎"I have to help Cedar on something,
‎I'll be back before curfew."

‎A few more chuckles, then she closed the door behind her.

‎An annoyed groan came from Briar as she stared back to the rose in front of her, but that annoyance disappeared and fondness replaced it.

‎Taking the rose, she went over to their window, just calmly staring at the crescent silver moon.

‎A small smile found it's way on Briar's face as she was back in her mind as she twirled the red rose, from Hopper obviously.

‎Maybe she was in love.
