Work Text:

Mike moves his dull eyes across the the floor before they land on Will.

"So you're a homo?"

Will is a bit uncomfortable hearing that stupid question from Mike, but what else is new?

He nods quickly "Yeah." before looking away in discomfort.

"Cool." Mike says, a little too loud. "Homos are cool, I mean I like David Bowie haha."

If this was a joke, Will didn't laugh.

Mike clears his throat.

"Anyways, that was really cool what you did. Saying all that in front of the whole town? It was brave." Mike says honestly.

Will huffs a laugh, rubbing at his gay neck "Yeah, I mean, it's not like I really had a choice y'know." He shyly glances at the asshole he's in love with.

"I just needed to face my fears head on, to get j-just one step ahead of Vecna."

Mike stares blankly, a rivulet of snot steadily running down his face.

Will can't help but stare, the light bounces off his bestie's snot in a way that makes his bones ache for what he wasn't allowed to desire.

Mike opens his mouth again "But um… the- uhh… so who is Ta-"

He's cut off by the door slamming open.

It's Jonathon.

He looks between these boys, a bit annoyed.

"Party time, guys. Hope you're ready to be Heroes."

Shit! The plot… they still have to kill Vecna or something.

As brother Jonathon turns and walks out the door, Will takes one look at Mike, finding him already looking back. The determined look on Mike's face is all Will needs.

UHH LATER DURING THE BIG OL' FIGHT

Someone fucks up part of the plan and now Mike and Will are alone again.

"So you lied about that painting didn't you?" Mike asks, expression blank.

Will is struck with a burst of anxiety at this, he really did not want to talk about this. Does he really need to keep having his own stupidity rubbed in his face?

But still, Will feels the need to be truthful with his little crush. Ever so painfully he stammers.

"Mike, please, I just…" He looks up at Mike. "I just couldn't tell you the truth, I thought you would hate me for it."

"Will…" Mike shifts in his seat, getting a better look at him. "You know that's not possible, right?"

"Yeah. Yeah, I know. You're-"

Mike fucking cuts him off.

"I just wanna know why you lied, Will. That painting didn't come from Eleven." He says.

Will isn't feeling great about this conversation. "It didn't, but-but I really wasn't lying Mike."

He looks at Mike, hoping he can just put the pieces together himself.

A moment passes before Mike's eyebrows shoot up "So you-"

Jonathon crashes through the nearest window, cutting their conversation short.

"Guys! Steve finally fixed the thing that needed fixed! Hurry, we need you guys out here!"

Will gets up faster than slow Mike "Great, I'll head outside." He rushes the words out as he hurries out the door.

Jonathon is left alone with Mike.

"Mike, It'll be faster if we go out that way." Jonathon points out the window, the window leads to a 5 story drop.

Mike walks toward the window to get a feeling for the height.

"Um, I don't know, can't we go out the door? Looks like a long way dow-"

Stupid Mike doesn't finish this thought because Jonathon kicked him out the window.

LATER AT THE LEG HOSPITAL

Mike survived, but he's so fucked up, dude. And now angel Will has volunteered to help him.

"Mike you really need to be more careful." Will stresses, cleaning Mike's gross wounds. "You know Jonathon wants to kill you!"

"Yeah, I know." He says, slack-jawed staring into his bestie's blueish-brownish-greenish irises.

"But I don't know who Tammy is." Mike divas out.

Will cringes. "Oh that? I just meant like… the person I had a crush on wasn't anyone I had a chance with, y'know?" He forces a smile.

Troglodyte Michael purses his lips together.

"How do you really know that though?" He pushes.

"I know! … I just- know, Mike. Okay?" Will is fucking getting annoyed now.

Mike is peeved, but he swallows his words and nods. "Yeah, okay."

Will is left to continue cleaning this bitch's nasty wounds in the silence's easing tension.

ACTUALLY DURING THE REAL BIG FINAL BATTLE

They're like 80% of the way finished with whatever they need to win, but Kali and Jane are getting weaker.

Will has been sat here using all of his strength to infiltrate Vecna's mind, and Mike was also there.

Mike sees even Will is struggling, and decides to do something super duper brave.

He grabs Will's gay shoulder.

"Will! Will, if you can hear me, I need to tell you I'm sorry!" He yells.

"I'm sorry for not telling you that I know about your feelings. I'm sorry for not being there for you when you needed me! And I'm sorry for not being honest!"

Tears are falling down his face as he gives his emotional monologue.

"I need you Will. Please, I believe in you. You can end this interdimensional creep! And we… we can be free from all of this. We can just live. I want to spend the rest of my life with you, Will!"

He looks up at Will's rolled eyes.

"After this is all over… Let's start a new party, you and me. Okay?" Mike sobs into Will's neck, his arms now fully wrapped around him.

Will, spurred on by the power of love, defeats the big evil. He collapses to the ground, blood now pouring out of his nose.

"Will! Will, you did it." Mike is elated as he holds him close.

Will has enough strength left to loosely hang one arm across Mike's back.

"I thought I was losing you for second there." Mike breathed.

"I'll always be here" Will tearfully smiled, cradling Mike's face in one hand as the other brought their foreheads together.

Will pretends not to hear the hollow thunk that came from Mike's skull at their collision.

And when I'm back in Chicago, I feel it
Another version of me, I was in it
I wave goodbye to the end of beginning…

Notes:

Gay Interviewer: So! Byler endgame. Huge moment. Fans are calling it historic. How did you land on that ending?

Gay Duffer: Yeah! We wanted to really honor Will’s journey-

Straight Duffer: -by waiting until the absolute last possible second so no one could accuse us of planning it.

Gay Interviewer: Right. Because commitment is scary.

Shawn Levy: Exactly. We felt Mike’s sexuality should function more like a surprise obstacle course. Keeps things exciting.

Gay Interviewer: Interesting. Some people did feel that Will’s love was sidelined for seasons.

Gay Duffer: I wouldn’t say sidelined. We had him suffer quietly, artistically, and alone. That’s representation.

Straight Duffer: Yeah, we really leaned into “unrequited longing as a personality trait.”

Gay Interviewer: And Mike? Why make his feelings a reveal instead of a development over this final season?

Shawn Levy: Well, if we treated it seriously the whole time, it might’ve meant something for the many audiences viewing.

Gay Interviewer: Bold choice.

Gay Duffer: We just didn’t want it to feel too gay until the finale.

Straight Duffer: Or too intentional.

Gay Interviewer: Last question. Any regrets?

Shawn Levy: Only that we didn’t drag it out longer.

Gay Duffer: Yeah. A few fans seemed happy. That was concerning.
