All You Had To Do Was Stay

Summary:

Tony returns to Mount Crumpit to tell The Grinch he’s sorry.

Notes:

I’ve lost control of my life.

Work Text:

The snow fell softly on Mount Crumpit as Tony climbed the winding path, his orange and black striped fur dusted white. Each step felt heavier than the last, not from the altitude, but from the weight of years of silence.

He'd rehearsed what he'd say a thousand times. I'm sorry. I should have stayed. I should have fought for us. But now, standing before that familiar crooked door, the words scattered like snowflakes in the wind.

Tony raised one large paw and knocked.

The door creaked open, and there he was; green fur, yellow eyes, that perpetually skeptical expression that Tony had once found so endearing. The Grinch stared at him, mouth slightly agape.

"Tony?"

"Hey, Grinch." Tony's voice was softer than he intended. "I know it's been a long time. I just... I needed to see you. To tell you I'm sorry."

The Grinch's eyes widened. For a moment, neither of them moved. Then, without a word, the Grinch stepped forward and pulled Tony inside, out of the cold.

"Sorry?" The Grinch's voice cracked slightly. "Tony, I've been waiting years to hear you say that, and now that you're here, I realize—" He paused, his thin fingers gripping Tony's arm. "I don't care about sorry anymore. I just care that you came back."

Tony felt something loosen in his chest, a knot he'd been carrying since the day he left. "I thought you'd be angry. I thought—"

"I was," the Grinch interrupted. "I was furious. Heartbroken. But mostly, I just missed you."

They stood in the dimly lit cave, Max the dog watching curiously from his bed by the fire. The years between them seemed to dissolve in the warmth of the moment.

"I missed you too," Tony whispered. "Every single day."

The Grinch reached up (he had to stretch, given their height difference) and placed a hand on Tony's cheek. His touch was tentative, as if he feared Tony might vanish like a dream.

"Then don't leave again," the Grinch said.

"I won't," Tony promised.

And then, slowly, the Grinch pulled Tony down into a kiss — their first in years. It was gentle and desperate all at once, tasting of peppermint tea and forgiveness. When they finally pulled apart, both were breathless.

"Grrreat," Tony murmured with a small smile, and the Grinch actually laughed — that rare, genuine sound that Tony had treasured all those years ago.

Outside, the snow continued to fall on Whoville below, but inside the cave on Mount Crumpit, two hearts that had been cold for far too long finally began to thaw.

Max yawned and rolled over. About time, he seemed to think. About time indeed.
