Homesick

Work Text:

Ace stared up at the sky. That's how he'd been spending a lot of his time recently. Laying on his roof, watching the stars drift past. He didn't regret coming to Earth, everyone had to move away from home eventually. But most people had the opportunity to go back. With all the weird bacteria and viruses he must've picked up by now, there was no going home ever again. He wasn't going to let his feelings destroy his entire planet, that would be insane.

And wasn't like he never got to talk to anyone from back home, it just didn't happen as much as he would've liked. Past three or four light years, communication was too spotty to even be worth an attempt most of the time and traveling that close to Earth all the way from Jendell was nearly impossible for most of the year. There were maybe only two times a year that anyone back home had a straight shot to somewhere close enough that he could call: the anniversary of the day he left for Earth and, every few years, there was a day or two in the summer where they could make it work.

At least he knew they could hear him playing most of the time. His amps and pedals and guitars were all modified to be picked up on Jendellian speakers and microphones. There were a few weeks in the spring when they were on the far side of their orbit and a few other planets got in the way that they couldn't connect at all, but that wasn't all that much time in the grand scheme of things.

He just watched the sky and waited. Watched the stars and planets and spaceships all floating by through the cosmos light years and light years away. Until the next transmission, the next time he could talk to his family.
