The red and white candy hung off Garou’s finger innocuously. Though, anyone looking at Sonic would be primed to believe the candy cane had been responsible for the muder of everyone he’d ever held dear in his life.
“Are you making fun of me?” Sonic asked, cool, grey eyes still regarding the candy cane and not Garou himself.
Raising an eyebrow, Garou spun the holiday treat around his finger. “No. It’s a gift, or well… it was supposed to be.”
Admittedly, it was a crappy gift. A day before Festive Night and all Garou had shown up with was a single piece of candy and a willing body and spirit. The only thing new about that was the candy, Sonic was very well acquainted with how willing his body and spirit were by now. Still, everyone always said it was the thought that counted, and Garou had spent several days thinking about what he should bring when he next slipped away to visit Sonic. Though, could was much more accurate a word than should, seeing as the pocket money he was allowed to keep from his paychecks was hardly enough to be called pocket change. He couldn’t afford a real gift, even if he had been able to think of one.
What did you even buy an actual ninja? He didn’t know.
“You brought me the worst tasting candy in creation as a gift for Festive Night?” Sonic said, face and voice deadpan. At least he had stopped glaring.
That felt a little harsh. “It’s not the worst,” Garou defended, holding the candy cane up for inspection. “Peppermint is traditional!”
Sure, it wasn’t Garou’s favorite either, but even during the holidays he found himself indulging in the minty flavor where it cropped up - hot chocolates, candies, cookies. It was the taste of the season, like watermelon in summer. It wasn’t really anyone’s favorite, but everyone liked it at the right time of year.
“It literally tastes like toothpaste. Why would you want toothpaste candy?”
Garou considered the candy cane for another few seconds. Sonic had a point. “Huh. Never thought of it that way.” He shrugged and stuffed the candy cane in his pocket. He’d eat it later. Sugar was sugar and Garou was not a picky man.
Sonic rolled his eyes, but stepped closer, into Garou’s personal space. “Sometimes I wonder if you ever think at all, Hunter.”
Grinning, Garou grabbed those slender hips and pulled Sonic in, pressed them together so he could feel the heat of his body. Though small, Sonic was all flexible muscle and deadly grace, his level of stealth something even Garou envied. As dangerous as any ninja ought to be and then some it thrilled Garou to be able to get his hands on Sonic. He leaned forward and nipped at an earlobe.
“Not a hunter anymore,” he reminded Sonic as he kissed along his jaw.
Sonic chuckled darkly, hands coming up to pet through Garou’s hair, occasionally gripping fist fulls and pulling. “Right, of course,” he hummed. “You’re reformed. The Hero Hunter is a good boy now.”
Garou bit at Sonic’s neck, a little sharper than could be considered playful. “I didn’t say all that.”
“Showed up here all puppy eyed with sweets for his sweetheart,” Sonic continued to tease. He pulled at Garou’s hair hard enough to get his head back and away from his neck. Grey eyes glittered up at burning gold. “A cute little boy with a crush.”
Snarling, Garou dug the tips of nails that had become claws into Sonic’s hips. “You talk pretty big for someone half my size.”
Quicker than Garou could track, Sonic’s hand slipped into his pocket and pulled out the candy cane. He tapped Garou’s nose with the curved end of it, smiling a wicked smile. “You know, I think I changed my mind about my gift,” he said. “I think I will accept it. Might just come in handy dealing with mouthy brats tonight.”
Neither of them, technically, ate that candy cane, but peppermint perfumed both of their breaths by the end of the night.
