In the absence of consent

Summary:

Dazai Osamu learns early that survival is a matter of observation, not feeling.

After witnessing something he was never meant to see, a presence answers back — not cruel, not kind, but logical.

As Dazai grows, so does it: guiding, calculating, reshaping him into something useful.

Mori Ougai notices.

What begins as protection becomes possession, leaving Dazai trapped between two mentors who never ask what he wants — only what he can become.

Notes:

This is a dark AU focusing on psychological horror, manipulation, and loss of autonomy.

The original entity in this work operates on logic rather than emotion and is not inherently malicious.

Chapter 1: The First Whisper

Chapter Text

CHAPTER ONE

Dazai looked calmly at the glistening red puddle forming below the sleeping figure.

There was rustling nearby—hurried and panicked—a wave of blue and red flashes closing in on his location.

“Papa wouldn’t appreciate this unnecessary drama,” he murmured under his breath, taking a last glance before walking quietly home.

He slipped through the backdoor by the garden, bracing himself for the scolding that awaited him. His father’s towering figure barely acknowledged him, dismissing him with nothing but a look of disgust. Dazai nodded out of habit and continued on his way.

“You’re lucky Dad doesn’t have time to spare,” his older sister said as she stepped out from the corner of the corridor.

“I am well aware,” he hissed back, rolling his eyes. “Now go back to being Daddy’s precious doll.”

He walked into his room without waiting to see her reaction.

He closed the door softly behind him. Blue light glimmered through the window from the star-struck sky—a reminder of the earlier flashes. The wind ruffled his hair as he slumped into the chair at his desk.

“That was weird…” he muttered, drawing imaginary circles on the wood with his finger.

Weird indeed, a voice whispered—distorted, inhumane.

“Great. I’m just hearing things now,” he said tiredly. “And soon the headlines will be: The popular governor’s son goes mental and lands himself in a psych ward.”

He sighed and flopped onto his bed.

“Just great.”

A small flash appeared.

The same voice from earlier returned.

Is it really?

Dazai looked up, utterly confused.

“What the—what are you?”

He was met with silence as they stared at each other—if it could even be described as having eyes at all.
