From the Deep

Summary:

Percy was... different. He was everything that they had hoped for, a born leader, and he had the strength, the intelligence, and the courage to survive what was done to him. He had the potential to lead, to be the symbol of hope for humanity. And that’s what he became. He was the best of all of them, but also the most tragic. A child lost to war, molded into something that would never truly be a child again. He was a Spartan.

0700 Hours
March 23rd, 2530
3 Miles Outside Elysium City, Eridanus II

A group of olive-drabbed soldiers marched forward along a dirt road. Their feet stomped into the ground, with each step smashing mud deeper with each step. A group of Marines marched forward up a steep hill.

Each step burned their legs as they started to crest the hilltop. "Sir, the radio is still not working. I can't get through to anyone out there. I think it might be from the work Javier did again." One of the marines, a younger man with brown hair named Paul Toda, called out to the front of their formation.

"Understood, hopefully once we get up this hill, we can reach someone with the short-range radios." Sgt. Williams Fedrocker replied.

No one could have told them, though. When they reached the top of the hill, the beautiful city of Elysium. One of the cities that stood tall and was a monument to the growth of humankind was burning. Large purple and pink ships floated above the city. Their size is bigger than anything the Marines have ever seen in person. They each knew of only one group that had those ships. The Covenant has found them, and they haven't been idle.

The sound of Anti-Air defense guns littered the sky as their rounds fired into the skies. Hoping to clip some of the lone flying ships that came close to the city. Their rounds did nothing to the large cruisers that lay still above the city. "Holy shit…sir, what do we do?" One of the men questioned as his eyes watched a large fireball blow out of the side of a skyscraper.

Sgt. Fedrocker turned to face his Squad, "Well, what the hell do you think we're doing? Get your fucking asses in gear. Move to the Warthogs and let's get moving. Leave the gear we don't need, only bring what you do need. We need to give those motherfuckers a reason to leave this planet. Am I right?" He barked out his orders as he started to drop the gear he brought that wasn't needed. Quickly shedding off five or ten pounds of gear, he loosened up his shoulder before he jogged down to where they parked their vehicles. With a twist of his head, he watched as each of the other jeeps was filled by his troops. With a look at the city that lay in fire and most likely countless bodies, he gave a silent prayer that he would make it to the end of the day.

'One more day, please lord let us have one more day.'

The sounds of the high-horsepower jeeps echo throughout the grassy valley as the Marines sped their way to the city. Each one of them is thinking about how today could very well be their last. One by one, the Marines closed in on the edge of the city, Sgt. Fedrocker radios for the group to pull over to the Office of Naval Intelligence building. The Marines spotted large cement barriers that were put up, as well as piles of sandbags. Unfortunately, there were lots of bodies and blood surrounding the area, too. Piling out of the jeeps as each Warthog pulled up to the

building. The Marines made their way into the building, each one watching the skies for any signs of the alien forces.

"Looks like they might have had people survive this firefight." Someone said, pointing out the line of blood that went to the closed door.

Pvt. Toda ran to the closed door with the logo of the Office of Naval Intelligence plastered on it. "Shit, the door is busted sarge. It's going to take me a moment to get these things opened." He reported.

With a sigh, Fedrocker nodded, "Alright, let's get this locksmith some protection then. Micheals, Ratts, and Jorrgons get into defensive positions along those cement barriers. Rosen and Addons, you two cover Toda." He ordered. Fedrocker himself got into a position between both groups of Marines. Slinging his MA37 assault rifle up and placing it on a small group of sandbags to help brace himself.

One of the marines soon heard a low hum that soon showed a pair of purple alien fighters flying into view. "Shit, we got banshees fast and low!" One of them yelled as the purple fighters came closer.

The pair turned their attention to the group of humans trying to take cover outside of the building. The front guns on the fighter started to glow bright blue as a large blast of plasma fire erupted from the front. Their shots hit the ground around the group, each one sending up a cloud of cement and debris.

The sound of rifle fire erupted from the small group as their rounds hit the alien fighter craft. Doing nothing more than bug bites to it.

"Toda, how's the door coming?" Fedrocker shouted over the sound of gunfire as a plasma burst hit his sandbags.

"Almost there, got it. The door is opening, get inside quickly." Pvt. Toda announced as he pulled himself up and inside the building.

One by one, the Marines made their way into the building. Taking turns firing and covering for each other. One of the plasma rounds managed to hit one of the marines as they turned around to run inside for cover. "Fuck they got Michaels!" Pvt. Toda screamed.

"For fuck sakes, Toda, close the dam doors." Sgt. Fedrocker spat out. Spittle came flying out of his mouth as one of the other Marines slammed their hand against the door's control. The door screamed shut as the Marines struggled to catch their breath.

The room they found themselves in was littered with dead bodies and burn marks. Meaning whatever did this to the bodies was still here. Bullet casings and blood flooded the ground. PFC. Rosen knelt down to one of the bodies. It was a young woman who had a large, swollen belly.

Rosen turned and shook her head to signal she was dead.

One of the bodies was a fair-skinned man who lay against the wall, with a sharp, brown, needle-like projectile sticking from their chest. Blood pooled beneath the body, his hand holding a large radio.

"Fuck…fuck…fuck! What do we do, Sarge? Those things are out there, and we have no anti-air." Someone cursed out.

"Relax, Marine, we're going to be fine. We just need to get in touch with the base. We can reconnect with whatever QRF forces they have out there." Sgt. Fedrocker stated. Pointing towards the radio, Pvt. Toda went to grab it, but was stopped by the voice of Ratts

"Sarge, we have motion on the radar!" Rosen muttered. Her senses were sharper than most. She would make a great ODST. "15 yards, sir, approaching fast. And it's not able to be identified, sir."

Small drops of sweat started to run down Fedrocker's face. They all turned their weapons to the side of the room from which the motion was coming. Soon they could hear the loud steps that were approaching, steps so loud they could rattle the teeth. With a loud beep, the door that separated the marines from whatever was on the other side of the room opened.

Blue and large was the only way to describe the sight. A large alien with blue armor. Something that looked like a large bipedal bug alien. Its large jaw opened, and it let out a roar. "Fuck, open fire!" Fedrocker ordered. The several guns trained on the alien roared to life as their rounds pelted the alien. Its armor was glowing a bright blue before a sound of cracking could be heard. The arm of the alien was raised, its hand holding a rifle that glowed as plasma bursts came from it. One of the bursts that contains the plasma rounds hits Addons and Jorrogns in the chest.

Killing the two instantly. Ratts took a round to his throat, grabbing at it as the wound was already burning through. Falling to his knees as he took his final gasp of air.

Rosen, who was closer to it, pushed her feet to move backwards. Her rifle ran low on rounds as its counter turned to red. With a curse under her breath, she swapped to her sidearm.

She let out a large volume of fire as her sidearm's last round clipped the alien in the head. Its final act was to try to fire one last burst of plasma. The rounds went wild as they hit the roof and did nothing more than burn the metal.

"Cease fire marines, it's dead," Fedrocker ordered. He stared at the bodies of his men, the smell of blood and burning flesh hit his nose. It wasn't fair, these young men who spent hours every day training were killed in a matter of seconds due to some random alien. This war, this dam war between them and the Covenant wasn't fair. Fedrocker gave a loud groan as he plucked each and every dog tag of the Marines of his squad. His regret being he can't get Michaels' dog tags.

"Sir, we still have more movement coming from the same side," Rosen said bitterly. She could see his pain as he lost his team.

He nodded and pulled out a new magazine and tossed it to Rosen. Both of them reloaded their rifles. With a tug on the charging handle, Fedrocker pointed the two into better positions for their now three-man team. Pvt. Toda was stationed near Fedrocker and Rosen, a few feet away. All guns were trained on the door again, and with a beep, the door opened.

Each marine held their breath as they watched another tall alien move inside the room. Its eyes were trained on the body of its fallen companion. It snapped its head to where it could smell the humans and charged at them.

As one of the three of them opened fire, each round hitting its target. The alien didn't stop, though, and in its hand it drew a large bright blue sword. It's hum loud as it swiped at Rosen once it got in range of her. Thankfully, she ducked out of the way but managed to land on her back roughly. Knocking the wind out of her, she tried to fire her gun, but her daze made it hard to aim correctly. Both Toda and Fedrocker pushed forward and fired their rifles at it. The rounds, doing nothing but annoy the alien, it reached out with speed that didn't fit its size and grabbed Toda. Throwing him aside and slashing its sword at Fedrocker, who was able to dodge it and attempted to tackle the alien.

'All or nothing now,' He thought as he tried to tackle the alien. Thankful for the time he spent wrestling in basic training and was able to use his shoulder to shove the alien back.

Unfortunately, the time he gave the others was very little as the alien got himself back up and threw the human around.

With a growl, he opened his jaw and grabbed his energy sword. With a snarl, he turned and was about to stab Fedrocker until a loud crack of both its shields and armor was heard. Blood started to slowly pour from the center of its helmet as it fell down onto the floor. Several sets of loud footsteps echo from the hallway it entered from. The marines all faced the hallway, hoping to see another marine unit or even a group of ODSTs. Instead, they saw something else.

Something that many called not human. Four large figures stood, seven feet tall, and wearing different colored metallic armored figures.

Rosen, who was just getting herself up, was the first to speak. "What the fuck is that?"

The first figure to speak was the one in the front. His armor was dark green, with a gold-colored visor, and in his hands was an MA37 Assault rifle. He moved to

Stand in front of the Sargent, and look down at the alien that lay on the ground.

"Spartan - 018, answering the distress beacon." The voice of a man came out of the armor. "What the hell is a Spartan?" Rosen muttered.
