Chapter 1: Miles Cannot Sleep

Chapter Text

Miles tried.

He tried everything.

Warm milk, an orgasm, counting sheep, reciting major law decisions by memory…he could not sleep. He was so exhausted from the events of the day, but he could not cross that barrier out of wakefulness.

His partner beside him watched with concern, and sympathy. Miles couldn't blame him. He had come home tired, forgoing an ill-advised evening nap in order to eat dinner, and Phoenix had been trying to get him into bed ever since.

And now that he had, it simply wasn't taking.

And Phoenix's eyes were beginning to flutter.

"Wright, there's no use in staying awake for me," Miles said gently, with only a hint of bitterness.

Phoenix groaned in protest.

"But I want you to sleep," he slurred, wrapping Miles up into his arms.

Miles let out a hum of contentment as he turned over, the better to adjust himself into the optimal cuddling position.

"It's alright, my love," Miles murmured into his neck, "It's alright. This is simply something that happens to me, at times. It is no failing on your part."

"Uh-huh," Phoenix slurred, uncomprehending. He snuggled in deeper, chin resting on Miles' head, then his breaths turned regular, and deep.

He may still not sleep. But if he had to be awake…he could do a lot worse than being in the arms of his lover.

So he stopped trying so hard, and let himself sink into his sleeping partner's arms, focused entirely on the various points of sensory input.

He still did not sleep, for three more hours.
