Work Text:
The snow fell gently on the window sill of Anna and Ruby’s house. On the inside, they were curled up on the couch together. The fireplace crackled gently, the flame whisped and flickered in the slightly dark room.
National lampoons Christmas vacation was playing in the background, just enough to fill in for the stillness.
Ruby was watching over Anna as she slept curled up to her. Running her fingers through Anna’s deep crimson hair. A soft, genuine smile on her lips. Anna was snoring softly, her breathing had evened out as she drifted into a deeper state of sleep. Her eyes flickered under her eyes lids as she dreamt sweet dreams.
“Still my sleepy little angel…” Ruby said, leaning down and placing a gentle kiss on Anna’s forehead. At the contact Anna stirred and stretched out. “Whats going on?” Anna called out, still half asleep.
“nothing… you fell asleep curled up on me” Ruby replied in an unusually sweet tone. She only showed this side to anna, always gentle and loving.
Ever since they met during the rising of the apocalypse, it’s always like they had a connection. One that runs deeper than the waters at sea, one true and strong as the bark of tree. Anna was her rock through the storm and nothing would change that ever.
“Did you check on the cookies…?” Anna suddenly asked. They suddenly locked eyes with each other before Ruby rushed over to oven. “Shit-shit-shit!” Ruby shouted as she grabbed the cookies out of the oven. “Ruby! You need mittens!” Anna warned her but it was too late. “OW DAMNIT!” Ruby shouted as she burned herself. Anna leaped off the couch and ran over.
Anna knelt down beside Ruby, she was looking at her severe burns. “Hey… hey it’s okay…” Anna pulled Ruby close, holding her gently in her arms.
Ruby leaned into the touch, resting her head into Anna’s shoulder. Anna picked her up and set her on the couch. Softly kissing her on the lips. Ruby returned thr kiss before Anna pulled away.
“You know.” Ruby started “your lips taste like cinnamon whiskey..” Anna giggled slightly at the complement. “Well thank you, I had some before you got home.”
“Where did you get it? We were out last time I checked.” Ruby questioned, she tilted her head at a slight angle, something Anna loved about her.
“Well, we have a car so I went out a did a supply run.” Anna answered. “Can you pour me a glass of it? Please?” Ruby did her puppy-dog eyes to persuade her girlfriend even more. “Okay Ruby. But only one. I don’t want the same thing to happen again.”
“You said you were never gonna bring that back up!” Ruby said, punching Anna in the arm not hard enough to hurt but hard enough to sting a bit. “Ow! Ruby!” Anna shouted out, she rubbed the spot on her arm. “Oh quit whining. You’re such a big baby.” Ruby snarked back, crossing her arm.
“Yeah, but I’m your baby.” Anna says as she pulls Ruby closer, their lips meeting in a soft kiss. She pulls Ruby down into her lap gently, she pulled away from the kiss and burried her face in rubys neck.
Ruby played with her hair as they sat in a comfortable silence. The two stayed in that position for a while, not caring about the other surroundings. Only focusing on the moment between them.
Eventually, Ruby felt Anna’s breath start to even out as she drifted off into a restful sleep. Nuzzling deeper into rubys neck and inhaling the scent of her. It was leather with a mix of whiskey and something uniquely Ruby.
After a couple moments, Ruby lifted Anna up and carried her to their bedroom. She laid Anna down on the bed. Taking off her rings and necklace and setting her in more comfortable clothes before tucking her in and covering her up. Kissing her forehead and muttering a quiet “goodnight, honey” in Anna’s ear.
Ruby went back out into the kitchen to clean up the mess. She put the burnt/cooked cookies on a plate and put the tray in the sink. Then she grabbed a towel to wipe down the counters free of cookie dough and flour.
She glanced out the window at the snowy night, the snow still fell gently as before. No signs of letting up or slowing down. Sighing to herself, she went into the living room and cleaned up the couch. Folding and putting away the blankets that were strew over the couch and re-organizing the pillows.
Ruby took a seat on the couch, she grabbed her flip phone and turned it on. She was checking her missed calls and messages. Responding back to some.
A couple hours had passed by and before she knew it, it was 2:14 in the morning. “Damnit… I can’t keep doing this.” Ruby muttered to herself. She got up and walked to their bedroom. Her steps careful and quiet as if walking over shells. She would hate to wake up her sleeping angel.
Ruby sat on her side of the bed. She looked out the window for a second, the snow still falling gently and whisping through the air. She let out a sigh before turning and looking at Anna who was peacefully sleeping, her eyes fluttering under their lids. Ruby smiled down at Anna, she laid down beside her and pulled the blanket up.
Anna started to stir, she looked up at Ruby before glancing over her shoulder and looking at the clock. “It’s 2:22 in the morning, honey… why are you still awake?” Anna asked, sitting up. There was concern in her eyes as she looked at her girlfriend.
“I know… I can’t help it. I zone out and then boom, it’s 2 in the morning..” “you’re thinking of hell… of Lucifer arent you?” Anna asked softly it was more of a statement than a question. “You’re not there anymore Ruby, you’re safe here with me…” Anna said as she gently cupped rubys cheek, brushing a strand of hair away from her face.
Rubys hand reached up and grabbed Anna’s, her smile soft and her touch gentle. “I know, and im glad you’re here. You’re keeping me safe from whatever is still out there..” Ruby started, her tone greatful. “but you can’t protect me forever. No one can…” Her tone changed to a somber one, she avoided contact with Anna, she couldn’t look in those beautiful green eyes.
“I’m sorry Anna…” “you don’t have to be Ruby… it’s not your fault. It’s never your fault.” Anna leaned her forehead into rubys. Ruby leaned closer, closing her eyes. A single tear running down her cheek the Anna wiped away. “It’s okay to be scared… but you’ll always have me..” Anna said looking at Ruby. Ruby finally opened her eyes to meet Anna’s.
Ruby felt Anna’s wings wrapped around her waist, a gentle reminder of Anna’s comforting presence. They stay like that for what felt like hours but was only a couple minutes. Ruby rested against Anna to which Anna held her close. She kissed rubys forehead with a tenderness that seems sacred to them.
Anna felt Rubys breathing even out as she fell limp against her. She pulled ruby ontop of her and sercured her wings around them. A shield from hells memories that had their grasp on ruby. “You will never be hurt again… I will always protect you…” Anna whispered in rubys ear. She started drift off but her wings never moved from their position.
