I am honestly shit at summaries so here's brief background Info. Bucky and Y/N have been best friends since the 40s. They discover that their relationship might be more than platonic now after decades of harboring feelings for each other. But the problem is, they're to scared to ruin the deep friendship they had forged over the years. They just couldn't lose each other again. This takes place between Civil War and Infinity War btw.

Work Text:

It was a quite peaceful night for all those residing at the Avengers Compound. The sun had long faded into a fuzzy ombre of oranges and pinks, with stars slowly blinking to life, scattering across the clear skies of upstate New York. While Steve and Natasha and most of the other avengers were occupied with plans of their own, Y/n found herself wrestling over the tv remote with Sam while the soft popping of kernels sprung into buttery popcorn in the microwave.

“YOU CHOSE THE MOVIE LAST TIME SAM!” Y/N exclaimed as she struggled to gain control of the remote.

“I HAVE NO RECOLLECTION OF THIS DECSION; THEREFORE, IT DID NOT HAPPEN!” He declared dramatically as Bucky ambled over, hands full of snacks and candy and most importantly the steaming bucket of popcorn.

Y/N and Sam bickering came to halt as Y/n smirked mischievously before jumping up to help Bucky. “Hey Bucky,” she drawled with melodic tone. “Which one of your very best friends in the entire world, do you think should choose the movie tonight.?”

Bucky amusingly looked between two before swiping the fallen remote from the ground and plopped on the couch. “I think between the two of your dramatic asses, that it is my turn to pick.” He said smugly as Sam and Y/N gaped at him. “and I choose. . . hm. . . this one.”

“The Greatest Showman again!” his best friends groaned. But as soon as Bucky pressed play their complaints seemed to fade as the opening number started. Y/N grabbed a bag of sour patch kids and climbed behind Bucky to the large cushy top of the couch. While she was settling herself, Sam leaned over to Bucky and whispered,

“I’m lowkey surprised you didn’t choose her to pick the movie since you like heeeer.” Sam teased making kissy faces while Bucky felt his cheeks flushed with color,

“Shut up.” He grumbled lowly, shoving Sam playfully.

“You didn’t deny it.” Sam continued quietly, mirroring the same tone Y/N had earlier.

“What are you two talking about down there?” The girl leaned between the two boys to grab a handful of popcorn.

‘Nothing.” They said in unison.

Y/N eyed them suspiciously before returning her focus on the movie. She found her hands wandering to Bucky’s long brunette locks bellow her, twirling the soft curls between her fingers. She always admired how nice and styled he kept his hair even when they were back in the 1940s. Y/N felt a growing desire to style his hair. “Hey Buck,” she whispered in his ear. Her warm breath sending flutter into Bucky stomach.

“Yeah?” He leaned slightly towards her eyes fixed on the movie.

“Can I braid your hair please?”

“Of course.” Replying a little more earnestly than he intended.

She started combing through his fluffy locks and Bucky couldn’t help but feel a small smile spread across his face as he slowly relaxed into her gentle touch. He loved her touch and how, when his horrible nightmares filled his nights, she would always be there to soothe him back to sleep by staying with him throughout the night softly running her finger through his hair and pulling him close. He suddenly felt overwhelmed with emotions and feeling he had kept to himself for decades. Whenever he was around her, his stomach soared with butterflies and his face flushed as if pink paint was splashed across his cheeks. Bucky didn’t know what came over him to do what he did next.

He started to lay his head back onto her lap and smiled up at her with the softest look in his eyes. Y/N had stopped mid braiding to tilt her head at her favorite person in the world.

“Hi”

“Hey”

It had seemed as if the world had stopped. As if they were the only two in world. Whatever song that was playing muffled into the background and the focus was only on each other. Y/N had just noticed the sliver tint to his ocean blue eyes. She wanted to swim in them. Unintentionally, her gaze drifted to his lips, but quickly snapped back up to his eyes, cursing herself mentally for toying with the idea of connecting their lips. He was her best friend; she didn’t want to ruin it by confessing her long-held feeling for him.

Unbeknownst to Y/n, Bucky had noticed her small glance, for he too felt the growing desire to place his lips upon hers. But he couldn't, she was his everything and if he told her how he felt, the chance of losing her, well, he just couldn't bear the thought of losing after everything they had been through together. The moment was soon interrupted by the third member of their party who cleared his throat knowingly.

“You two could get a room you know.” He said teasingly, secretly always wanting the two to get together finally. Bucky had snapped his freshly braided head up from Y/N lap as she fiddled with her clothes, the two blushing furiously. Y/N leaned over to lightly slap Sam’s arm,

“SAM!” she exclaimed, “It- I It’s not, ugh. Just watch the movie, Sam.”

Bucky was just looking everywhere but his friends, in fear his face would border the color of a tomato. Sam chuckled after successfully making them flustered and continued watching the movie.

After a little while, Bucky had sprawled his head back on Y/N lap finding it the most comfortable pillow in the world. Forgetting the teasing Sam would do nonstop for days.  His eyelids felt heavy as she continued to stroke his hair, the repeat motion making him drift to a calm relaxing sleep. Y/N had noticed the weight on her lap increase, looking down she found her heart melt at the sight of Bucky peacefully sleeping in her lap, feeling overwhelming sense of love for the man who had taken her heart so many years ago.
