Chapter Text
The city below was in complete and utter turmoil, fires fierce, unwavering, smoke filling the once clean air. National city as it was once bright, alive and vibrant, had become lifeless and gray in under twenty four hours. Screams could be heard, screams that called for a hero, one wearing a red cape that caught wind, a blue suit and red skirt, and that unmistakable symbol on her chest. A symbol that once stood for hope, stained of fear.
Supergirl, the hero and hope of National city. Was now the very one who unleashed her full power on the city, like a God, punishing powerless human-beings for their sins. Those who stood against her did not live long to tell the tale, and to the ones who kissed the very ground she walked on, were spared mercy, still to be kicked aside. They were mere ants to someone as powerful as her. She held God-like powers, and used them for good, to help others. Until earlier that day, it was like any other day of saving the city, fighting crime.
Nobody saw it coming, not even her. Red kryptonite, unlike green kryptonite, it didn't seem to affect her. She felt no pain at all, completely fine actually. It all happened so quick, one second she was the very sweet, kind and normal Kara, then the next she was unrecognizable.
Kara became ruthless, using her powers to their full extent. Never biting her tongue, words cutting deeper than any knife could. Her gaze was even sharper, once blue like the sky, soft like the clouds, sweet like candy that rots your tooth to the root. Now they're cold as ice, that spark that shined through others, it was gone.
The spark of hope, that flame that was lit in the citizens of National city, hearts filled with the superhero you once heard great things about. Whether it was saving thousands of innocents, or getting a cat, (snake) out of a tree.
Now the woman of steel floated above the city, above the smoke, the chaos and fear that she practically fed off of. The hero had betrayed her once colorful suit for something a bit more dark, no blue, just black, all black, except for the tiny symbol on her chest. Not standing for hope, but fear. There was no silly cape, or skirt.
Most citizens saw the hero and ran in fear, fear for their life, of what may happen to them if they even look at her the wrong way. There were only a few who didn't bow down to this hero who turned dark. Cat Grant, the DEO, and most of all, Lena Luthor. She of course wasn't dumb, CEO of L-CORP, sister of Lex.
Lena didn't fear much, not anymore at least. Lena also didn't live under a rock, she had heard what was going down in the city, the disaster, Supergirl turning against the very people that she used to protect. Heroes don't just go to bed and wake up deciding they want to be bad today, shed blood, and spread terror. So what happened to Supergirl for her to turn into such a menace? That, that was the real question.
Lena's eyes locked onto the watch that hugged her wrist firmly. An idea, stupid yes, careless for her own life even, but just maybe she could reach the hero, Not like she knew Supergirl on that level, but they have worked together more than once.
She quickly swallowed down any hesitation that could be felt in her throat. With not a single drop of hesitation left, Lena opens the watch, a symbol, the same crest that Supergirl wore on her chest. Lightly, pressing her finger down onto the button that would call Supergirl to her location,
It was for emergencies; however, this was emergency enough. Lena closed her eyes tight, leaning back, a slight creak in the chair she sat in. There was no time to even take a deep breath and understand what she might have just done.
There was a thud on the balcony to Lena's office, signaling her arrival. That was quick, surprisingly quick. The balcony glass doors were pushed open with enough force that they shattered instantly, glass shards flying all around. The kryptonian didn't so much as flinch, making it clear that was very much intentional.
Supergirl made her way to stand in front of the desk that Lena sat behind. Lena didn't back down, yes the woman who stood before her could kill her in a blink of an eye for no reason at all, but that never stopped her before, it wouldn't stop her now. "I've seen the news. Having a bad day apparently?" Lena smartly questioned.
The kryptonian shrugged, a slight but visible smirk forming. "No," She replied, voice cold, response simple and as plain as unseasoned chicken. "I'm having the best day of my life actually." The hero added on.
Lena raised an eyebrow at the response. "Best day of your life? By what, causing fear, death? That's not exactly very heroic of you, Supergirl." The words came before she could bite her tongue, leaving a bitter taste on her tongue on the way out.
"Maybe I'm done being a hero." Those words lingered in the air a while longer than needed.
"All you pathetic humans ever do is rely on me, calling out my name whenever something goes wrong. I'm a God and you, you guys are nothing compared to me. So I'm done. Finished saving the day, got that, Luthor?" She kept adding on, a hint of anger slipping past her lips. The hero has either snapped or is being controlled.
Lena bit her tongue, she always had a quick and smart response. Yet this time, Lena struggled to find those words. The CEO was lucky enough that the rogue hero hasn't snapped her neck yet, and she could consider herself even luckier if she was left untouched after this.
"I'm a God, I should have realized earlier... the power that I hold." Supergirl added on. It seemed she believed she truly was some God. "Once I'm done, I will conquer this world. Like I was meant to."
"Whatever God complex you got going on right now is very childish, and just so you know, earth isn't yours to conquer. So try another planet." Lena shoots back, finally finding the words that got stuck in her throat.
In a blink of an eye, the hero was in front of her directly, hand firmly but not painfully, wrapped around her neck. Lena swallowed thickly, grabbing at the kryptonian's wrist, urging the hero to release her grip. Though she could breathe, Lena did not appreciate being grabbed by her neck.
"And who are you to speak to me like you're the God, you're just another powerless human to me." The hero released her grip, hands resting at her side, fist clenched. Lena settled back into her office chair, taking a deep breath of air. Though the kryptonian no longer held onto her neck, the feeling still lingered against her skin, like it was still there.
"You will soon bow to me like the rest of the world. Not to Supergirl, not as Kara Danvers, but as Kara—"
"Kara?" Lena's voice cut through the hero's sentence, sounding hurt, and unsure of what she was just hearing. The super spoke of herself as Kara Danvers. Her best friend, a flawless reporter, and an amazing human being. Maybe that amazing human she thought she knew wasn't human at all.
There was a wave of sudden realization, washing over her and hitting her hard, right in the chest, an aching feeling. Now it really made sense; her alien detection device going haywire after Kara's visit. How Supergirl miraculously showed up as soon as Kara was out of sight. The resemblance between the two, soft blue eyes, a warm and welcoming smile with the flash of her teeth, beautiful blonde hair that caught sunlight. All this time, it was right in front of Lena, and she had never realized.
Kara Danvers was Supergirl.
The tall, strong and cruel hero who stood in front of her right now, was the ever so sweet and loving reporter who over the years, Lena had come to grow feelings for the only friend she acquired in National city.
"It's really you, it's always been you, Kara." The words escaped, flowing out like water before Lena could bite them back. The realization, it was all so sudden, everything happening so quick. And she never saw it coming, her friend was an alien, and not just some regular alien hiding amongst humans, she was a goddamn superhero.
Supergirl had saved Lena more than once, and all of this time it had been Kara saving her. Saving her, protecting the city, hiding her identity, lying, all of these years. Lena could help but feel a hint of hurt, a bitter taste of betrayal from Kara.
"Well duh," The hero rolled her eyes, though Lena couldn't help but notice the slight amusement on her face, Kara didn't even try to hide it. She was having so much fun, destroying the city, toying with Lena, the control that the hero had, the kryptonian loved every second of it.
Kara leaned down to meet Lena's eyes, green and beautiful, reminding Kara of a forest after a storm made its way through. "You were just too foolish to realize." The hero added on, tone ice cold, and words sharp as a knife.
Lena knew Kara didn't mean it, no way her Kara would ever say anything like that. That confirmed that this was in fact not Kara, nor Supergirl. Whoever this was, was unrecognizable.
"Kara, you don't mean that." Lena managed to mutter out, voice coming out more strained than she would like. She was a Luthor, she was supposed to stay strong, nevertheless, she was breaking from the inside out, Finding out that her best friend of years is Supergirl, who happens to also be under some control, destroying the city, and hurting those around her, not just with strength, but also words.
The kryptonian shook her head, crossing her arms and straightening her back once more bringing back that confident and fierce look. "Lame old Kara would never even utter a word that would hurt you, but it's a good thing that Kara is gone. It's time to embrace the new, Lena." Kara chuckled, sounding more than proud of this new persona.
"Please, Kara." Lena never begged, never pleaded, but here she was sounding pathetic, practically begging the hero to stop and come back to her. Lena cupped the kryptonian's cheek softly, her cold hands embracing Kara's warm and soft cheeks that were tinted with a rosy red.
The warmth from the hero's cheeks spread to Lena's icy hands. They stayed like that for a moment, still and calm, neither of them speaking. Only looking into each other's eyes, and even if it was for a second Lena swore, she saw the kryptonians eyes soften, the ice-cold stare turning into the beautiful afternoon sky and soft clouds.
Kara didn't speak, only removing herself from the gentle embrace of Lena, stepping back and making her way to the balcony. Soft crunches of glass underneath her weight. The hero stood on the balcony, eyes locked onto the chaos beneath. It didn't take long until Kara was up in the gloomy night sky again, taking off somewhere between the clouds and smoke filling the air.
Leaving Lena alone, surrounded with her thoughts and the hard truth that her friend lied to her face more than once. God it hurt bad, despite the anger, betrayal, a part of Lena wanted to hear Kara out, to see her point of view. Nevertheless, that wouldn't be happening anytime soon with Kara in this state.
The city was falling from the very hero who protected it, and now, Lena felt as if she were falling along with the city. Drowning with the blood shed, the falling skyscrapers, and many screams.
