Chapter Text
Beauty of the Sea
The Next Saga
It had been ten years since he last set foot aboard his ship. Shunsui Kyoraku, former captain and now plantation owner, sat behind his massive desk and gazed out the window.
Oh there had been an occasional excursion here and there, but he never manned the helm like before.
They had also moved their base to the small island. He was hoping to bring his only niece to this location, she was a competent office manager and he did need some help there. He had meticulously kept his daily log as he had done on the ship. It was just something that made sense and he could always refer back to some incident from the past. But with the plantation growth and shipping business he simply needed the extra help.
Lost in thought, the ringing of the signal bell, heralding the arrival of his ship broke him out of his dream.
They had set up a bell on the dock and a system of rings to indicate what to be expected. Two chimes for his own ship, Katen Kyokatsu, four chimes for a friendly encounter, business associates and such. And a rapid, persistent chiming for danger; unknown inbound ships, hurricanes and storm surges.
He strode down to the dockside still in his slippers, telling himself that it was for comfort only and not because he was too lazy to put on boots or fancy shoes.
The gangway was just being slipped into place. He noticed Starrk's head bobbing to and fro as he went over his checklist.
“Oi! Mr Starrk, everything alright?”
“Aye it is.” Was the tired reply.
A mischievous twinkle came across Kyoraku's eye. “Did my shipment arrive?”
An angry feminine voice called out, “If you're referring to me as shipment I'll have them drop all my luggage on you to squish you flat.”
“There's my Nanao.” He crooned and chuckled.
“Who's your Nanao?” She shot back in an all too familiar argument between the two of them.
“Did she give you any trouble?” He asked Starrk.
Starrk glanced at the former captain, then at the fuming girl, returning to the captain, “I decline to answer as I value my life.”
Shunsui threw back his head and laughed loudly. “Aye, she's a sparky one.”
Starrk straightened up and gave him a look of sheer disbelief, “You still have that death wish, don't you?” The disbelief turned to amusement as a tiny woman began to stomp her way down the gangway.
“Sparky? I'll show you sparky. I'm going to kick you where the sun doesn't shine.”
Shunsui chuckled, “Are you sure about that?”
“That I'm going to kick your ass? Absolutely.”
He just couldn't help adding fuel to the fire. “Oh to be sure, and you'll probably do a good job of it too, but….are you sure the sun doesn't shine in that particular place?
And young ladies shouldn't curse like that.”
She paused her descent and narrowed her eyes. Kyoraku couldn't help but laugh loudly as what he had said dawned on her. The look of disgust amused him. “Oh! Oh oh my God, you are such a deviant, that's gross.” She began walking again only more softly, the stomping was gone.
When she reached his side, she folded up the fan that had been in her hand and smacked him on the side of the head.
“Oh by the way,” Starrk's voice broke the short silence. “I went ashore at the town and ran into Tiburon’s captain, she wants to talk to you privately.”
“Ah I see, well I'll settle my sweet Nanao into her suite then hook up the gig. Wouldn't want to keep her waiting.”
“The brat decided to stay with her for now, so maybe haul her back too.”
“You still call her brat? I'm surprised Little Flower hasn't done you in yet.”
“Oh she's tried a few times, but I'm still quicker.”
Starrk was being chatty again which was unusual but Kyoraku had grown used to his former first mate’s ever changing moods. Usually they depended on how much information he had to pass on.
Nanao settled on a room far away from his own. “By the way…are you going to introduce me to the “fishyman” as Lilynette calls him.”
“Ah ha!” He quietly chuckled, “She still calls him that?” A pale blush tinted his cheeks. “Soon I suppose, but I have to confirm it with him.”
“So much for the legendary ladies man.” She teased.
“I still have the power to ground you.”
“You can try.” She challenged boldly.
After he saw her to her room, he introduced her to the servant girl who was to help her.
“I don't like the idea of a servant.” She grumbled.
“She's not a slave or anything, in fact her family asked me to take her in. She's very bright and loves to read, just like you.”
“Read huh?” Nanao still looked cross. “Why must I have a servant anyway.”
“It's just easier.” He sighed, “It's just the way things are done here. She gets a portion of her salary and the rest is sent to the family.” He sighed again, “The people here are poor, at least when we first got here, now it's just kind of expected that I hire folks to give them a better life.” A rather small young woman, about Nanao's age knocked and entered the room. “Nanao I'd like you to meet Momo, she's here to help you and be a companion as there aren't many young women your age on my plantation.”
“And why not? Women work just as hard.” Her arms crossed stubbornly.
“Indeed they do, but the ones here either work the land or are busy with family. Momo was brought here specifically to keep you company so you don't get bored with your strange old uncle.” He resisted the urge to reach out and ruffle her hair as he had done when she was young. “I think you'll soon settle in with each other. You can talk about books or whatever young women talk about. It's just very old fashioned here, single young women are expected to have a peer companion.”
Nanao let out an exasperated sigh, “Fine! She turned to Momo, “Do you know which room is the library?”
“Of course,” Momo chirped happily. She grabbed Nanao's hand and guided her to the library.
Eager to get to the meeting with the captain of the Tiburon he quickly changed, then he strode rapidly out the door….to find the gig waiting for him ready to go.
“Ahh, Bastien always a step ahead of me.” He chuckled at his Creole plantation manager.
“Just observant, sir.” The man smiled warmly, “I just happened to overhear the conversation with Mr. Starrk.”
You're indeed a handy fellow to have around, and you've managed this whole plantation with expertise.”
With the gig hooked up to a good horse, he made it in no time to the inn. What used to take over an hour to walk, now takes about fifteen minutes. He did wish that Bastien had the ability to read his mind, the gig was a bit small for the amount of people that were returning for he had every intention of bringing the captain back with him. He'd just have to be creative or cranky about Lilynette returning also, he'd have to fit her somewhere. Too late to make the switch to a larger carriage.
He saw the captain of the Tiburon and her first mate, Franceska Mila Rose, snugged behind a corner table.
He boldly pulled out the remaining chair and sat. “I understand you wanted to talk to me?”
“Indeed.” She stated stiffly.
Kyoraku laced his fingers together, leaned forward, elbows on the table, chin balanced on the intertwined finger. “I'm all ears.”
Hallibel signaled for her mate to leave them, then spoke in a hushed voice, “Aizen is no longer king.”
“Holy shit, how'd that happen?” He was momentarily stunned.
“It's….rather complicated. I also had a business matter to discuss with you.”
“I'm intrigued, but this probably isn't the best place for these discussions.” Just then a pair of thin arms wrapped around his shoulders.
“Hiya old man,” a cheery voice chirped in his ear, he turned to look but already knew who it was.
“Little Flower,”
“I ain't little anymore.”
Kyoraku turned his attention to Hallibel again. “I've got my gig outside waiting, we can talk more freely at my place.”
“Excellent.” She called for her first mate to join them again, “Franceska, please take the ship to the open sea at the plantation cove. I'm sure there's not enough room for two ships at their dock, but the open water is fine.” She gave the former pirate a look, “Would there be enough room for my whole crew to come ashore?”
“Funny you should ask,” He smiled broadly, "We just finished a guest house.”
“Perfect.
“Now how do we get Little Flower back home?”
“I'll ride with you.”
“Gig only has two seats,” he pointed to himself and Hallibel, “One, two.”
“Fine! I'll ride in the back on the luggage rack.”
“No luggage rack in the rear, on the gig, luggage is carried underneath, between the wheels. So that's out.”
“I'll just ride the damn horse.” She stated stubbornly. “Horses are strong.”
“You're not gonna burden the horse that way. Even the strong have limits.”
“I guess I'll just have to ride on the floorboards between you two.”
Shunsui scowled, “Fine but you're facing forward, I'll not have you making faces at me the whole trip.” He had told himself that he'd get her home any way possible and that he'd pretend to be grouchy about it; he hadn't anticipated actually being rather grumpy for some peculiar reason.
“You grumpy old man.” She playfully teased him.
The return ride was quiet and crowded. No one spoke unless it was necessary. Even with good suspension the two wheeled gig was not a conveyance you wanted to hold conversations in. Biting your tongue while bouncing along a dirt road was not a good idea. Even so, Lilynette still managed to turn her head and make faces at him. He tried to ignore her.
As soon as they arrived home, Lilynette took off, running up the gangway of the ship.
Bastien assisted Hallibel down from the gig, and turned to Shunsui, “I'm sorry, I had no idea there would be more than you and young miss returning.”
“It's fine, we managed alright.”
Bastien led the horse and carriage away to the stable. And the remaining two entered the house all the way through to Kyoraku's office. The housekeeper, having seen the master of the plantation return, knocked politely to ask if anything was needed from the kitchen, he looked at his guest.
“May I have some tea and fresh fruit?”
Shunsui grinned, “One tea and some fruit, and tell Rani that we have a guest for dinner.” Hallibel glanced at him questioningly.
“No drink?”
“I have my own supply right here.” He had yet to sit down. Opening a small cabinet he withdrew a clear bottle with brown liquid inside. It was an aged whiskey he had “liberated” from a ship a long time ago. It was getting older and no longer had the full impact, but still provided a kick.
He let out a satisfied sigh after sipping trying to ignore the initial burn as it slid down his throat.
“I think you'll enjoy Rani's cooking. She's originally from India, but was sold into indentured servitude by corrupt family members. She learned our style of cooking from her last placement.”
Rani, a small woman, was rescued along with Bastien, the plantation manager, and Josie the housekeeper. Each were given the choice to return to their original homes, free of debt and free passage. This was something that Kyoraku and his crew did frequently; buy up the contracts, even of slaves and set them free. This was one reason the island's population had grown.
Bastien chose to stay as did Josie. At first Shunsui thought to put Josie, a lanky, sassy woman from Jamaica, in charge of the kitchen, but she stated, plainly and clearly, that she had no aptitude for cooking, but knew how to organize a home. Bastien had already been helping his former “employer” with running the estate and his eyes lit up with joy when he saw the fruit trees then the horses.
Rani on the other hand wished to go home if her family wanted her. She wrote to her parents, stating that her jealous uncle had sold her off and she wished to return to her family. The reply took a very long time ... .they declined, stating that by now she must be damaged goods and was of no use to them.
Shunsui then Josie held her while she cried.
When the tea and fruit arrived, Hallibel picked a fig from the tray, split it in half and took a bite. She hummed in appreciation as the flavor burst in her mouth.
“Fresh off the tree.” Shunsui said proudly.
“Worth the effort. Which brings me to the topic at hand, I would like to join your shipping company.”
She had withdrawn her ship and crew from Aizen’s grasp soon after the Quincies incident, and never made good on her promise to arrest him one month later; it took six months for him to realize she had dropped the threat.
Her departure from Aizen's company meant he took his petty revenge and stripped her of all her property, excluding the ship. He seemed to realize that was something he was not going to get his hands on.
They sat in negotiations for several hours, until Josie knocked, stating that dinner was ready.
“I'll have to discuss all this with my partners.” Shunsui concluded.
“Partners? May I ask who, aside from Coy?”
A bemused chuckle escaped his mouth, “Well of course him, but I also have an invisible partner who controls the local water, I'll have to get clearance to be allowed another ship passage.”
Once his shipping business had started to become profitable, he had a heart to heart talk with The Great Mother. She agreed with some minor adjustments to the deal, to permanently lift the magical curtain that had shielded the cove up to that point. Only one ship at a time and only once a week to any that were in the vicinity. Usually it was his own ship, but a few others were hired to occasionally transport goods in and out of the cove, the stipulation being, they had to meet and pass the Mother's test. So far there were five ships total.
Tiburon would make six, she usually covered further distances. The others stayed in the Caribbean or along the east coast of the colonies.
Rani went all out for dinner that night, grilled swordfish, steamed vegetables and soft, fluffy biscuits. They both sighed with happy contentment of filled bellies.
“I think it would be nice to wind up the evening by watching the sunset on the veranda.” Kyoraku stated.
“Sounds lovely. And I'd like to plan my crew for some shore leave, so I'll need permission for that guesthouse.”
“Absolutely!”
He poured himself another glass of whiskey, Hallibel asked if there was any wine, which of course there was. Both sipped their drinks in silence as the sun set.
Then Starrk appeared. He rummaged through the liquor cabinet, took out a bottle of rum, poured a glass and drank it straight down.
“Is there a problem?” Kyoraku asked with concern.
“Child” Starrk rumbled. Then poured another glass. This one he sipped slowly. “She's gonna be the death of me.”
Hallibel politely covered her mouth to hide the giggle that escaped. “It can't be that bad.”
“Did you know she wants to join your crew?”
“She mentioned it.” Hallibel said casually. Almost too casually. “It might not be a bad idea.”
“Dammit Bel.” Starrk growled.
“She could use some time to be around other women. It could be a very good lesson.”
Starrk simply groaned.
Breaking the tension, Shunsui asked Hallibel to explain about Aizen’s defeat.
“First let me start with…I didn't know pirates knew magic.”
“Oh my yes!” His tone was amused. “There are lots of times, as you may know, when there's simply nothing to do. Out of boredom, those of us that can read, do so regularly and enthusiastically.” Kyoraku took a long sip of whiskey. “Depending on the books at hand, we pass the time reading. Some are practical, others not so much at first glance.” He made several graceful movements with his fingers and the flames on the torches jumped into the sky.
“That was the wind, right?” Hallibel glanced between the two men. “Right?”
Kyoraku guffawed, “That was a simple parlor trick, they can be far more complex.”
“I believe that's what I saw that day.”
“Why were you even there?” Starrk questioned. “I thought he stripped you of all your holdings like us.” He motioned to Kyoraku and himself.
“Oh he did.” She calmly sipped her wine. “He even sent out a decree for me to return and explain myself.”
“He took his sweet ass time calling you back.” Shunsui's eyebrow arched upward.
“No no, he sent it out right away,” Another sip of wine went down, “I just took my time complying.”
“Atta girl!” Starrk crowed.
“He was pretty upset when I happened to show up…and then all hell broke loose.”
The three took long sips of their drinks, settling in for storytime.
“At first I wasn't really paying attention because Aizen was glowering at me from the throne. I was more interested in catching up with a friend. We were stationed against the wall furthest from the dias.” She paused for a moment as if collecting her thoughts. “There was a commotion at the doorway and a blond, I found out later, was named Urahara. I believe he's a friend of yours?”
Shunsui let out a small snort of mirth, “Pirates don't really have friends, we have acquaintances, comrades even, but friendship is dangerous.”
“Well whatever you call it… He had a young man with him. Aizen taunted Urahara about that, but he claimed the young one was his apprentice, which of course drew more taunting.
Then the kid yelled something about releasing someone, which of course Aizen declined. You know how smooth Aizen's voice gets.”
Both men made quiet grunting sounds, but didn't interrupt her more than that.
“That's when the craziness started. Fire and lightning everywhere, suddenly the kid had his sword pointed directly at Aizen's face. Urahara muttered some words and suddenly Aizen seemed trapped in some sort of web or something similar.”
“Binding spell. Those can be handy.” Kyoraku added.
“In all the spell casting, people got hurt, some…ended up dead, Aizen's second in command was one of them. I'm glad that green-eyed sneak didn't make it. He actually vanished into a puff of dust.”
“Kisuke and the kid? Should I assume they took over?”
“No, the kid ran off to find his lost friend, and Urahara gathered all the official people and told them to run things on their own, in a fair manner. I have no idea how that's going to be accomplished, but it's not my problem.” She shrugged. “All of Aizen’s political prisoners are to be freed.”
“So, we're free to return to the island?” Starrk questioned.
“Yes! I suppose so.”
Starrk took one last, huge gulp of his drink, “I'm glad that creep Cifer is gone, he's the one that was following you that day you got shot at the cove.”
“I wasn't exactly in a state to notice such things.” Kyoraku rubbed the back of his neck.
“So did they eventually execute Aizen, or is he still locked up?” Starrk finally set his empty glass down.
“As far as I know, he's still confined.” Her hand moved to cover her mouth as she tried to suppress a yawn. “Excuse me!” She lightly chuckled, “I should get some rest.”
“You could stay at my place.” Starrk stated hopefully.
“Tempting offer, but I must decline for now, I still have some things to go over with the captain about shoreleave for my crew. I promise I'll take you up on that offer soon.”
“I'll hold you to that promise.”
“Captain? I need to get word to my ship.”
“I'll have someone row out with the invite.” Shunsui finished his whiskey.
“Might be a good idea to send Lilynette along, they know her and will probably listen to her over some stranger.” Starrk added.
“Good, sounds like a plan.” Shunsui then addressed Hallibel, “You remember how to get to your room, or shall I send someone to guide you?”
“No, no, no need, I remember.” She covered another yawn. As she passed by Starrk, she reached out and tenderly stroked his cheek. “Soon, as promised.”
A wide goofy grin crossed Starrk's face.
They said their goodnights and headed off to their rooms.
Shunsui made a quick detour to the kitchen, hoping to catch Rani before she went to her own room. “Oh good, you're still here.” She nodded to him. “I'd like to take a basket in the morning and was wondering what you could whip up quickly for a small group.”
“I think I know just the thing.” She smiled brightly at him.
“Good, I'll leave it in your capable hands. But please, nothing tonight, you need your sleep too.”
She nodded as she wiped her hands on her apron. “I was just finishing up.”
Shunsui filled a jug with water, grabbed some fruit and waved her off to bed. He had long ago always made sure to have some fresh water by his bed.
He set down the fruit and water as soon as he entered his room, stripped off his clothing and slipped into his private pool.
In a short amount of time he felt the water shift as he was joined in the pool.
“Hello my precious one.” He opened his arms and felt the familiar body cuddle up next to him.
“Hello!” Shiro or rather Silver Fin was doing much better at human speech, but still said things in a slow, deliberate manner as if picking over his words carefully, making sure he used the correct ones. “You were long, tonight.”
“Yes I was gone for a long time, I had a guest. Which is one reason, other than the obvious one, I was hoping you'd come here tonight.” Shiro busied himself with playing with Kyoraku's chest hair.
They didn't meet on a regular basis. It all depended on the ocean, was it high or low tide, was there a storm, was Shiro busy elsewhere or Kyoraku busy with something. It made their time together that much more special.
“I need to speak to Mother tomorrow if that's possible.” The hand on his chest stilled.
“The guest was important?” Shiro questioned.
“Yes! I need you both to meet her.”
Shiro drew back.
Shunsui gave him a questioning look, then it dawned on him, he reached out, clasped the point of the pale chin, leaned forward and kissed the water chilled lips. “It's not like that, love. She wants to join my business. Besides, I believe she and Mr Starrk have a prior thing.”
Shiro's mouth formed a small “O” of understanding.
“That's why I need to talk to Mother, I need her clearance.” The hand returned to petting the chest hair and Kyoraku let out a contented purring noise.
After a period of lovemaking in their way they relaxed in the pool. Shunsui was lost in thought, not really paying attention, but lightly playing with the silvery strands of hair. Shiro gently pulled the hand away from his hair and nuzzled his cheek into the palm.
There was a lack of response from the large captain who was completely lost in thought. Shifting the angle of his face, Shiro slid the hand over his own mouth, pressed the hand closer and bit. That finally got a response.
“Dammit!” Kyoraku checked out his hand, there was a visible bite mark and tiny trickle of blood. “Did I do something wrong?”
Shiro frowned at him and turned away.
“Oh! Did I miss something you said?” Shiro shook his head. Shunsui let out a sigh, “Sorry I guess I was lost in thought.” He began to twirl the silver threads again. “It was a nice daydream. You were able to leave the water, we found a meadow filled with flowers. I brought a picnic, after we made love, I was combing your glorious hair, then braided it with sweet smelling flowers.” His eye took on a dreamy look.
A loud splash out in the center of the cove caught their attention, “I guess that means you have to go.” He clasped Shiro in a tight hug. “Remember to ask Mother to meet me in the south cove, you come too. There's people you need to meet.” He let out an amused chuckle, “Well I guess some have already been met, but I'll provide a few treats.”
The south cove was a hidden place. Not just inaccessible by boat, but Mother had placed a glamour over the area to have a secure meeting place. It had several large boulders that the sea-folk liked to sun themselves for a short while, a small sandy beach, and large trees that provided shade. This is where the pirate and the ancient mermaid leader hammered out their deals. He often brought different foods and drinks for her to sample. The meetings were usually profitable for both.
Morning came on all too quickly. It always irritated him, yet here he was, up before the sun crested the horizon. He claimed to not be a morning person, yet was consistently up before anyone else, except Rani. This was his life now, but he had kept the same schedule on the ship. It was a habit born from his father's insistence that he be up and productive, that once he had his own ship he'd need to be an early riser. That insistence had carried through his whole life. He often joked with a side of seriousness, that the day would be so much better if morning started after noontime. Everyone laughed.
He cursed the morning.
After dressing he made his way to the kitchen, knowing his cook was already at work, probably making bread, and had a pot of coffee at the ready. He was blessed to have Rani.
She heard his shuffling footsteps and had his favorite mug already filled with coffee for the slumbering giant. She carefully placed it in his hands as he entered the kitchen.
“Bless you my little kitchen witch.” He bent down and kissed the top of her head. This was also part of their morning routine. He went back to the table, where the sugar and cream were waiting. Three teaspoons of sugar and a dash of cream, he liked his coffee sweet and light. Starrk would tease him about this, but he would just give him a middle finger and sip with contentment.
There was a broad bay window with a seat in the kitchen that let in the bright sunlight. He lumbered his way over to it and sat down. Again this was his routine.
There was something to be said about the quietness of the early morning. Usually it was just Rani and himself in the kitchen. Him sipping his coffee and her preparing for the day. He was able to sort through his thoughts and memories as he watched his ship being led out to deeper water. Even at this distance Lilynette could be heard shouting.
Today for some odd reason his thoughts turned to Starrk. Maybe it was Hallibel's presence, and their obvious attraction to each other. It wasn't jealousy he reasoned, just a distant feeling.
For someone who was known as a romantic, he had never truly had a romantic relationship until now. Before it had always been just basic need, simple companionship. Even with Starrk.
It started during a storm. The ship rocked with each swelling wave…suddenly they fell together and the need and desire for gentle release shot through them both.
Only on the ship, never more than companionship. No romance allowed, it was more than that. They used each other's name, but not beyond the cabin door. Not on deck, not on land. If any of the crew knew, they kept it to themselves.
Once Kyoraku retired however, whatever it was they had, faded.
A quiet growling noise broke his train of thought. At first he just assumed it was one of the many cats that prowled the plantation, keeping the rodent population down, but they rarely entered the house. Then thought of the three cats that were residents of the house itself, but they knew better than to enter the kitchen other than to get to the window seat. First was the king of the home, Nimbus; a huge gray, long haired, cloud of a cat. One would assume that he was all fluff, that would be wrong, he was a solid fifteen pounds of cat that took up three quarters of the window seat, only moving enough to follow the sunbeams. Next was the sleek little black cat, named Pixie. She had an unusual marking in the fur around her eyes that made it look as if she was wearing glasses. She was a bit of a cranky kitty, only allowing affection on her terms, it reminded Shunsui of his niece who only allowed affection if she felt like it. She could often be seen curled up with Nimbus on the window seat. Then there was Ghost, the pure white, aloof shorthaired, trim cat who liked high places. He was the athlete of the three, often seen racing from room to room at high speed. His soft white fur reminded Shunsui of Shiro’s soft white hair. The remainder of the plantation cats resided outside and were mostly gray or orange tabbies, except for one calico who seemed to be the boss of the rest. Rani did not allow the indoor cats to be around her cooking. Only cuddling with them on the window seat as she waited for whatever she was cooking, to finish
He finally gazed at the doorway. There stood Nanao looking like a small thundercloud. Kyoraku had just the perfect amount of caffeine in his system to get into silly mode. He knew it would annoy her even more, but what was the point of being the jokester uncle if he couldn't actually tease her.
She hadn't even noticed him yet. She was just staring blankly at the table. She was probably still a bit blurry eyed from sleep.
“Good morning my sweet Nanao,” His voice sing-songed out with excessive happiness. She glowered at him.
“Would you like something for breakfast, miss.” Rani asked politely. Nanao focused on her then sighed.
“I'll have some of that coffee, and would it be too much trouble for some toasted bread?” There was a hopeful note in her voice.
“No trouble, miss.”
“Did you sleep well?” Shunsui decided he hadn't annoyed her quite enough yet.
She actually hissed at him.
The cat on the window seat looked offended.
Rani placed a plate with the toast on it in front of Nanao, “There's butter and two types of jam, one fig and one mango-ginger.”
Nanao's face brightened, “There's actually mango-ginger? That's my favorite.”
When Rani had started working, she had begun to make jams and preserves with the fruit of the plantation. Kyoraku had been sharing them with Nanao up to that point.
When the plantation had started, he had originally thought to stick with the fruit and sugar cane, but as the place grew and more people moved there, they found out pretty quickly that more supplies were needed. Meat and eggs added to the growing land. It was more sustainable to bring in living creatures for this. The livestock were not pleased to be aboard a ship for a prolonged period, but that was the only way to get them from the colonies to the island. Even several bee hives were transported which was tricky. Bees do not like to be transported in such a manner, not that it was fun for the livestock, but someone had to be near the hives at all times with the smoke-pots to keep them calm enough. So now they also had cattle, pigs, chickens and goats along with the bees. The bees never forgot the indignity of being confined.
He and Bastien had gone over the books and realized they were spending more on purchasing food supplies from others to feed the residents of the plantation, so they just bought their own animals, refined their own sugar from the sugar cane and honey from the bees. Also large farms were set aside for vegetables. Then they also realized they needed grains for flour, so small plots of land were dedicated to growing the grains too, this way they'd have their own flour which meant a mill…Shunsui sighed at the memories. It had taken a few years to get everything in place, but they were pretty much self-sustainable now.
His plantation now took up half the island. No one seemed to mind that as the other residents benefited also.
Quiet footsteps signaled another person had come into the kitchen. Captain Hallibel sat at the table and rubbed her eyes. Rani of course offered food and coffee.
“The coffee smells great. In fact that's how I found the kitchen.”
“Sorry about that.” Shunsui chuckled, “I forgot the guided tour yesterday.”
“Would you care for something to eat madam?”
“Is that bacon I also smell?”
“Yes! I was just rendering a batch for the fat.” Rani would render down fats for further use and everyone got to enjoy the crispy meats. She had beef tallow and bacon fat. “Would you also like some eggs?”
“Mm yes please, two easy over if that's not a bother.”
“No bother.” Rani set a cup of coffee in front of Hallibel.
While waiting for the food, Hallibel eyed the other person at the table. Kyoraku realized that the two women hadn't been introduced.
“Ahha, my manners are slipping. Captain Hallibel this is my beloved niece, Nanao. Nanao, this is Tier Hallibel, captain of the Tiburon which will be joining our company.”
They just nodded at each other. Rani placed a dish with the bacon and eggs in front of Hallibel.
Nanao, who was now more awake, kind of eyed the plate with a look of hunger. Shunsui noticed.
“Sweet Nanao, if you're hungry just say so.”
“Shut up!” She was still irritated with him.
“Aww still grumpy?” He made a face at her, and sipped his own coffee.
She growled at him again.
“Do I need to send you to your room for a timeout?”
“I'm gonna hit you.”
Hallibel couldn't help the small smirk that crept across her face. “Is he always like this in the morning?”
“Relentlessly.”
Both women glanced at him, and he gave them a cheeky finger wave over the rim of his mug.
Rani had turned to look at Nanao, “Miss, would you like something?”
Nanao lowered her eyes, “Some scrambled eggs please, oh and some bacon, it smells wonderful.”
Shunsui made soft cooing sounds from his perch on the window seat. Nimbus comfortably spread across his lap.
The next person to arrive was Starrk, who decided to take the long way around the table. He stealthily ran his fingers across Hallibel's nape. Shunsui caught the tiny shiver that ran through her and the light blush that tinted her dark skin was a beautiful touch.
“What, no coffee and food at your own home, so you have to come and invade my kitchen?” Shunsui teased Starrk.
Starrk paced over to the former captain, plucked the coffee mug from his hands and firmly set it on the counter. “That's enough caffeine for you. You've gone obnoxious.”
Nanao couldn't help the giggle that escaped. She happened to glance at Hallibel and noticed that she had covered her mouth, but the broad smirk peeked out.
The scene was interrupted by Lilynette bounding into the room, full of teenage energy and sass, followed by Tiburon’s second in command.
“Is that coffee and bacon I smell?” Franceska asked hopefully.
“Pull up a chair.” Kyoraku called out, “I'm sure Rani wouldn't even mind making some eggs to order.” Franceska eagerly sat at the table.
“Man, that took a lot to haul the tub out to deep water.” Lilynette complained.
The room took on a deadly stillness as everyone glanced at her, then at Kyoraku, who stood up to his full height, displacing Nimbus. “Come again?” His voice was a quiet rumble of thunder that you hear at a distance and know that a bad storm is coming.
“Apologize,” Starrk snapped. “Apologize right fucking now.”
“What?” Lilynette was confused.
“What did you call my ship?”
“I…I ummm,” she bit her lip. “It was supposed to be a joke. You know how I like to joke.”
Shunsui grabbed his mug off the counter, dumped the cold liquid down the drain, refilled the cup and moved to the doorway. “I'll be in my office when everyone is ready for the briefing.”
The echo of Starrk scolding Lilynette followed the former pirate down the hall. He entered his office and closed the door to cut off the noise.
He did know the child was likely just teasing, but the word stung. His beautiful ship was not a tub by any standards.
Roughly an hour later there was a tap on the door. Starrk swung it open cautiously. “Everyone's ready for the meeting.” His voice was quiet and calm. Kyoraku nodded at him and a small stream of people entered, some still holding onto cups of coffee.
“Before we get to the main subject of this meeting,” His head turned towards Hallibel. “The guest house has twenty furnished rooms, full kitchen and bathing facilities. A housekeeper and separate chef are employed there. Your crew won't need for anything.” He paused slightly. “All I ask is that you don't take fruit off the trees, they're pretty much accounted for, for shipping purposes. Fresh fruits and other products will be supplied. If anything is needed beyond that, see Mister Starrk or myself.”
“Understood!” Hallibel agreed. “And thank you for the hospitality. The crew will be grateful for time away from being on-board.” Franceska nodded eagerly.
“Good, now that that's cleared, let's return to the subject at hand. Where we are going in a moment is secret, as in so secret you'll die if word gets out.” Several hard swallows were heard in the room. “I understand that this is a thing of legend and myth, but I swear on my very life that it's true.” In a way he enjoyed building the suspense, he had done so a number of times in the past and it always amused him.
“You see, in order to freely use this harbor for shipping, I had to get permission from the ones who control the water. They are indeed creatures of mythology, but,” he spread his hands dramatically, “...you'll have to take this on faith. My partners are,” Another dramatic pause. Starrk cleared his throat trying to move Kyoraku along in his storytime. “They're mermaids.”
Hallibel and Franceska were giving him a side eye glance and Nanao wasn't quite sure if she truly believed him. She only knew what Lilynette had told her of the “fishyman” but she sort of assumed it was just a local that liked to swim a lot, not that there were actually half fish, half humans involved.
“Come on Uncle, really?”
With an absolute straight face, Shunsui nodded, “I realize how fantastical it sounds, but this is something I wouldn't lie about. I swear it on my ship.”
They all knew he was being serious. No captain would swear against his ship.
“I've asked Rani to pack a lunch and Bastien has, or is setting up a picnic area. My staff, for the most part know of this secret area because they are necessary to my needs. Everyone reassemble in the kitchen in half an hour and bring along clothes that you don't mind getting wet. Some of this meeting needs to take place on the water for obvious reasons.”
“Do you have a wagon or carriage big enough for all of us?” Nanao looked around the room. There weren't a great many people but they'd need some form of transportation for everyone plus supplies.
“No carriage needed, we walk. It's not that far, or are your feet in poor shape?” There was a hint of concern in Kyoraku's voice. “Most of the supplies are already there, all we need to bring are the extra clothes and Mister Starrk and I will be bringing the edibles. “
“Oh!” She said softly. “...and my feet are fine.” She added defiantly.
He remained behind his desk as they exited the room. The quiet was interrupted by a soft, hesitant tap on the door. He granted permission for the person to enter.
In a tone that was unusual from her usual boisterousness, Lilynette entered and stood before the desk, head hanging low. “I…I wanted to apologize again. I'm truly sorry. It was meant as a joke, but it was a stupid one.
I love the ship, it's a second home.”
“My my.” Shunsui also kept his voice soft. “I know you like to joke, and maybe under other circumstances I might have agreed. But please remember, don't disparage a captain's ship. It's a precious thing to us.”
“Okay.” She was very subdued.
A small twinkle lit his eye, “I was going to recommend a punishment for you, but you might have outright hurt me for it.
I was going to tell Starrk to make you wear dresses for a month.”
A look of horror crossed her young face. “You wouldn't!” She exclaimed with a gasp.
He shrugged, “It was just a passing thought.”
“That's just cruel.”
They both started to laugh.
“No more picking on my ship.” He said between chuckles.
“Got it. I gotta head home, Starrk's making me clean the house.”
“Ouch, now that's cruel.”
Just as Lilynette opened the door to leave, Starrk poked his head in, “Everyone's ready.” He patted Lilynette's shoulder as she passed by.
“....look at me just being lazy. I still have to gather my things together yet.” Kyoraku made a face. “I'll be there shortly.” He hurriedly gathered his extra clothing and made his way to the kitchen where everyone was waiting. “All set?” He called out. There was an affirmative reply.
He and Starrk gathered the baskets filled with food and drinks, then they all flowed out the door.
True to his word, it was just a short distance.
“Why…why didn't I see this when we docked?” Nanao was puzzled. It should have been clearly seen as they floated into the main cove.
There was a low chuckle from Kyoraku, “All in good time.” It was an explanation that didn't actually explain anything.
She narrowed her eyes, “I hate when you do that.” His niece grumbled at him. “So when do we get there?”
Kyoraku waved his hand dramatically, “We're already in the protected area.”
They all gaped in surprise. Before them was a gazebo-like tent. It had no walls, only posts holding the canvas roof up. And several smaller enclosed tents for changing into swimwear.
Not only were there the baskets of picnic goods that they carried there was a small wagon with more drinks and food items, including a refreshing looking fruit salad.
There was also actual ice to keep things cold in the tropic climate. Ice was not a common commodity on the islands. Kyoraku went to extreme measures to transport it during the winter season from the northern colonies. The ship was fitted with a special metallic storage shell to reduce melt. And that same storage was used in a deep cellar under the house. Ice lasted for a long time this way, until they were able to fill the space up again the next cold season.
There was a different bell set up in this cove. Its tone was unique and could be used to summon the mer-folk for the sporadic meetings.
“Well folks, welcome to the private cove, the meeting should be starting soon, so why don't you change into the clothing for swimming. Bastien, please ring the bell.”
The man did so. The tone was deep and resonating.
“How long until they come?” Nanao asked.
“Shouldn't be too long. They usually lurk nearby, just waiting for the signal.” The former pirate motioned to the changing cabana tents.
“Ladies first.” He gestured grandly.
