Work Text:
Tamara had watched enough teen movies to understand the importance of Prom. But damn..did the shopping have to take so long?
Tamara had taken her lovely girlfriend Noelle out to shop for outfits for prom. Noelle had been talking about it constantly, dreaming up the exact outfit that would make her look as perfect as she needed to at her first ever Prom with her first ever girlfriend. Tamara thinks that Noelle always looks perfect, but a pretty outfit wouldn't hurt at all. She'd only ever seen her in those shitty school uniforms, sometimes on the rare occasion that she'd see her in pajamas, and on the even rarer occasion that she'd see her at work. All those times Noelle would look beautiful, but just imagining her in formal wear made Tamara's face heat up and her hands get clammy.
But...the only issue is that Noelle just had to bring Tamara along. "What if you don't like what I pick out? What if I end up looking stupid next to you?" Noelle would worry, and all of Tamara's reassurances that no, I would never dislike what you pick out. And love, I look constantly look stupid next to you, and no, you haven't left me yet, so yes, I think it'll be okay. All of them fell on deaf ears, she needed to come.
It's not that Tamara hated shopping. She loved doing grocery runs, where she could look at all the junky foods and sneak as many into the cart without her adoptive parents noticing the extra items on the receipt. She loved going to music stores where she could sift through all the albums that were as old as her. But she didn't like shopping for clothes. The only acceptable way of shopping for clothes was thrifting, in her opinion. Thrifting was entertaining enough to keep her attention. She could see the way clothes were worn by their previous owners, she could keep tally of all the weird stains she found, and she could even find golden pieces if she looked hard enough.
Shopping for clothes in a department store of all places is what she imagined purgatory to be like. Gray, boring, dreary, and empty, with the top 40 of twenty years ago playing in the background.
She sifted through various dresses in her signature color, blue and found a pretty dress. It was a deep blue with black floral details, the dress went to about her knees and was held up with spaghetti straps. She also found that her leather jacket she wore that day looked perfect with the dress. She'd probably wear some black heels, or her boots. "Wear the boots, darling, it ties in the leather from your jacket." She heard Noelle say from behind her as she looked in the mirror outside of the dressing room, she swore that woman could read her mind. She smiled and looked over her shoulder. "Maybe I will. Heels aren't really my thing, anyway." She said before changing back to her normal clothes and sat where Noelle was sitting, in front of the dressing room door, facing the mirror. As she watched Noelle go into the dressing room, she felt a myriad of emotions. First of all, how she loved to see her girlfriend go. And secondly, as much as she loved her, this was going to be the worst part. The waiting.
Sure, Tamara could go on her phone. But she didn't want to seem like a neglectful person. And yeah, she could space out, think about the lyrics to her next song. But she didn't want to seem disinterested in something that clearly mattered to her beloved girlfriend. So she did what anyone would do. She sat, stared at her reflection, and waited for Noelle to leave that dressing room and be happy and give whatever feedback was asked of her.
As soon as she heard the click of the dressing room door unlock, she looked up and knew she was a goner.
Noelle looked good. Better than good, she looked like a goddess. Tamara was doe eyed, staring at her with her jaw slack. Noelle came out of the dressing room in a maroon button down, the first few buttons undone to show the 'T' necklace Tamara had bought her. She wore a black waistcoat and slacks, with black dress shoes that made her look absolutely sinful.
Noelle walked up to the mirror and looked over her reflection with a far more critical eye than her girlfriend, who currently was trying her hardest to control herself from absolutely pouncing on her.
"Do you think it's... boring? Compared to your outfit, I mean." Noelle asked, turning to look at Tamara, who was bright red and looking her up and down like she couldn't get enough.
She looked hungry, Noelle could have fun with hungry.
She smirked and made her way to her girlfriend, standing between her legs and cradling her face, moving it to look into her eyes. "My eyes are up here, darling." She teased, stroking Tamara's cheekbone with her thumb. "I'm.. I'm sorry, love." Tamara managed to stutter out, her face getting more red by the second. "Oh, it's alright darling. You're too pretty to stay mad at." She drawled and took Tamara's hands and put them on her waist. "You like it? Does it feel nice on your hands? Good texture? "
"I.. I.. Um.. Yeah.. It.. It feels nice. You look very.. Pretty." Tamara heard herself and wanted to smack herself in the face. Pretty? Just pretty? Good going Bachynska, you may not be the brightest but you know she looks more than pretty. "Well, um.. More than just pretty. You look.. You look absolutely beautiful." She said, holding Noelle's waist and looking her up and down again, never able to get enough. Her jaw was still slack, well, until Noelle closed it for her with a smile.
"Then I'll get it. I have never seen you react this way for anything, and this is priceless." She teased. Tamara furrowed her brow and pouted. "Hey! Is not my fault I have a beautiful girlfriend, is it?"
"No.. I suppose it isn't. But damn, if you keep acting like this, I might actually get an ego."
"You say that like it's a bad thing. And it's not an ego, it's confidence. It looks hot on you."
'Confidence.' Noelle thought, 'I guess it does look good on me.' She looked back at the dressing room mirror and felt perfect. Her suit fit perfectly, and the arms of her girlfriend wrapped around her waist fit ever better. She pulled her phone out of her pocket and snapped a picture of the moment. She'd live in this moment if she was able.
"Send me that."
"I will"
".. I love you." She said, tightening her hold on Noelle.
"I love you too, darling."
