Work Text:
Will felt something poke his foot under the diner table.
He looks over the top of his burger, Mike's self titled “kicked-puppy stare” gazes back at him. No matter how many times he makes fun of his boyfriend for his pleading eyes, deep down he loves them just as much as the average service worker Mike tries to get pity from.
“You’re so stupid” Mike's eyebrows draw together and his lips drop into a faux pout.
“Do you not love me anymore?” His face is lighting a fire inside of Will, it’s equally infuriating and endearing. He still doesn't understand how one person can pull him in so many directions at once. Not that he minds.
Will sighs, shaking his head. Mike has gotten more soft and genuine over the last few months. Something clicked that day they finally defeated Vecna, freed Will from his grip after all these years. Mike's walls carved out a Will shaped hole, letting him walk through. All of the revelations they’ve had since then has allowed for them to weave each other closer, allowing them to fully understand each other. The humor they previously used to mask the truth has since fallen away.
That doesn't mean that Mike is any less of an idiot than before. Even while on a date. He still tries to make Will laugh with the most immature, shallow jokes ever conceived (he usually succeeds but Will would never admit that out loud). He is currently doing his most commonly recurring bit, the annoyed bratty boyfriend. Will’s starting to think that it’s not as much of a joke as Mike lets on, he’s always been very good at the part, and they do say to pull from what you know.
Either way, Will doesn't mind. He knew what he was getting himself into by dating Michael Wheeler, even craved it, and now that he has what he has always wanted he knows better than to complain.
Even though he is an idiot, Mike still loves him. He took Will to his favorite burger place, and he swears he saw Mike slip the waiter an extra tip on the way in which could explain the playlist that has been playing since they sat down. Just like heaven is playing softly in the background as he reflects, his hypnotizing doe eyes could have also had an effect.
Will thinks back on all of this while Mike's stare grows impatient, expecting a reply. He takes a bite of his burger, grateful for his dopey boyfriend.
“Of course I love you”, Mike's facade slips for a second, genuine adoration taking over his face. Will thinks he might melt if Mike looks at him like that for a second longer, so to avoid his premature puddle death (which would be extremely embarrassing and he's not sure Mike's bribe would be quite enough for that cleaning job), he tags on, “dumbass”.
Despite his obvious efforts of survival, Mike seems dead set on killing will.
Will thinks this might be the best way to die anyway.
