Work Text:

Dating a pro was almost everyone’s dream. Getting the fame, money, and connections. People would fake love for a chance at dating a pro.

Which is what recently happened to Denki. One of Eijiro’s close friends. The girl would go out partying with her friends frequently; taking Denki’s card with her.

So obviously Eijiro would invite his friend over all the time. They would play games for hours. Half the time when you stopped by you’d hear Eijiro and Denki screaming at each other.

You were glad your boyfriend was a good friend like that. You’d give them their space and bring them snacks every now and then. Though it was getting frustrating. From hanging out almost everyday to; maybe hanging out once a week and going on a date once a month.

So you decided since you still had a key to Eijiro’s place and you were still dating you’d stop by after work, and have a conversation. Communicate. Something you both took seriously because that’s how happy relationships work.

You obviously had no intention of ease dropping. But when you heard Katsuki also in the massive apartment along with Denki it was hard not to.

“I mean man. You have to be real with yourself. You fall for people easily. Too easily. She probably took advantage of that.” Grumbled Katsuki

“I’m speaking from experience, man. It’s best to end it now than face the hard truth later. And publicly.” Denki chimed in.

Suddenly you felt hot, you could feel your heart hammering, ears ringing. They were talking about you. Eijiro was going to break up with you. Your throat felt tight, you couldn't swallow. Heartbeat in your ears. You were just standing in his apartment doorway with a bag of his favorite snacks and protein bars.

Yes. Were you a part of the population that wanted to date a pro hero because of how cool it’d be since you’d never make it as a hero? Yes. But you truly loved Eijiro. So you just closed the door quietly and left the bag at his door. Rushing to the elevator, not trusting yourself to confront him now. Not knowing if you were angry, upset, or hurt. Not knowing which one you should feel.

Not even sure of your own feelings now, did you actually love Eijiro? Or were you a piece of shit and liked the idea of him loving you. Oh god. You were a piece of shit weren’t you. As you stood in the elevator you sent a quick simple text to Eijiro.

“Hey babes! I dropped some snacks off by your door. Lmk when you wanna go out I’m free most of the weekend. Love you!”

When you walked out of the elevator you knew you needed air. Everything felt like it was closing in. Everything felt too tight, too close, too loud. But you had to get home, eat something and walk in an area you were more familiar with. Not some place you weren’t familiar with, not a place that would make your obvious anxiety worse.

End it now. A year long relationship ended because your friend is insecure. That’s the reason it’s ending. Unless you were an awful person, and you probably are. Thoughts running through your mind when you walk to your car. Everything was clouded. You couldn’t lose the person you love. Or the person you think you love.

Hearing the beep of your car yelling at you to buckle was grounding in a way. At least you had control over something. Driving your car.

That’s what you had control over. That’s what you should focus on. Not Eijiro’s closest friends' opinions on you. At least not yet. Just focus on driving your car to your apartment to eat your food. Things you had control over.

Not opinions.

When you finally got home. And climbed the many stairs to your apartment. You felt slightly better. More in control. Reminded of the fact that Eijiro wouldn’t break up with you out of nowhere. Communication was the strongest part of your relationship.

After you ate and calmed down a bit you should talk to Eijiro and tell him that you overheard Katsuki and Denki earlier.

Though cooking dinner was hard. When the air made your lungs feel tight, your chest hurt, and stomach felt like a knot. Eating was even harder.

Though after three bites with the same gagged feeling you gave up and opened your phone to a message from Eijiro. Expecting a thanks for the snacks or a possible date night. You opened it feeling a little light. But also with some dread.

“Hey I think we have drifted apart a little recently and think we should take a break for a little. Thanks for the snacks. If you want me to pay you back let me know.”

The color drained from your face. This wasn’t the Eijiro you knew. Eijiro couldn’t have sent this. He couldn’t have.

The call button was the first thing you pressed and it rung, and rung, and rung. Until there was the voicemail box. Eijiro knew how bad your anxiety was. He'd never. Never. Now pick up a call from you.

Hours passed. You felt like a crazy ex. That’s probably what you were. Your eyes stung. Throat tight. Curled in a ball on your bed staring at your phone. Eijiro wouldn’t break up with you over text would he? You felt sick.

Felt like shit. You were a piece of shit human. You should have tried more in the relationship. Paid for dates. Gotten him more things. It was your fault. You just had to move on. You have to control what you can. And you can control.. absolutely nothing. You were up for hours, you couldn’t sleep, couldn’t eat, couldn’t breathe right, couldn’t stop crying, couldn’t stop panic attacks.

That’s why he broke up with you. You can’t keep yourself in check. A PRO HERO shouldn’t have to deal with that crap. You just added on more and more shit for him to deal with.

You were a shit person for putting him through all that. Taking advantage of his caring nature. For your own benefit.

You don’t know when but at some point you passed out. And woke up to your phone vibrating next to your head. It was Eijiro! You answered it quickly. Just wanting answers. Maybe you weren’t single after all and it was a mistake.

“Eijiro is done with you. I’ll make sure to take care of him so stop calling him like a maniac.” A gruff voice said on the other line.

“Wait, can I speak to him please?” Your voice broke as your throat tightened and eyes watered. Taking in a shaky breath.

“Are you fuckin’ cryin’” the voice on the other end snorted.

“… yes please let me speak to Eijiro” you paused, wiping your tears as if that’d stop them from falling.

“Dude… we… gone… pissed… more…” another voice on the other line called out. To the person you were talking to now. Who you assumed was Katsuki, as you knew how far Katsuki would go to protect Eijiro. And how rude he could be. So it must be Denki who was cutting in and out.

“Nah you can talk to Eijiro tomorrow he already knows you are just using him. And yeah now you won’t be rich and famous from dating red riot. So piss off you bimbo bitch.” Said the gruff voice you assumed was Katsuki before he hung up.

You laid in bed shaking and sobbing. You really did love Eijiro, you knew that for fact.. but Katsuki was right in a way. Eijiro needed someone better. Someone not you. So you might as well get the hard part over with and grab your clothes from Eijiro’s place.

That is if you could get out of bed. You just felt so heavy and your throat felt so tight. Once last call. One last time for a desperate ex.

It rang once. Twice. “Hey babe what’s up?”

“Eijiro..?” voice broken clearly from crying.

“Woah are you okay what happened? Do you need me to come over?” Eijiro’s voice clear with concern.

“Why are you breaking up with me..?” You sobbed.

“What?…” Eijiro asked confused but you could hear his brain working over the phone before he let out a heavy sigh. “Katsuki and Denki got drunk at my place. Thanks for the snacks. I forgot to send you a text.. I’m not breaking up with you. I promise. I’m coming over right now okay?”

“Okay” is all you could get out confused and tired to ask anything else.

“I love you” Eijiro said before hanging up.

Wait the fuck. What happened. Is Eijiro actually coming over. Is this a dream. You felt fuzzy, heavy, sweaty, sticky. You could feel the anxiety lose its grip. Leaving you empty and exhausted.

You could smell something burning in your kitchen so like anyone you sprinted out of your bed. Only to see the red headed man you so desperately loved trying not to burn himself taking burnt toast out of the toaster.

“Your awake” Eijiro said finally seeing you. Or just choosing now to address your presence.

“You actually came..” you mumbled before running up to him crying into his shoulder hugging him and breathing him in like it’d be the last time.

“Katsuki and Denki will stop by to apologize soon, they were drunk but that doesn’t excuse their actions. I’m so sorry baby..” Eijiro started rubbing your back hugging you close.
