Work Text:
The mission was finally over. They had been working on the takedown of a supposedly small organization that was infiltrating mafia property for the last month. While Dazai originally estimated it would take no longer than a few days, some unforeseen factors had proved him wrong and made them work all the way through december to new years day. He didn’t usually care for such days, he never celebrated them before and didn’t plan on celebrating them soon either.
But now, while walking through the streets of Yokohama, dimly lit by neon signs, when he looked at his equally tired partner on his side, an idea popped up. They were supposed to go straight to the headquarters to report to Mori, but he really didn’t want to deal with that right now. He reached out to lightly pull on Chuuya’s arm to get his attention.
The boy turned his head lazily, “Hm?” He sounded even more tired than he looked, which almost made Dazai reconsider the idea he was about to propose. The last month had been a game of cat and mouse, they could barely catch their breath. So-
“Wanna ditch the job and celebrate new years?,”
-if Chuuya wanted to refuse, it was more than understandable. Not that Dazai really knew how it was celebrated. Sure, there were fireworks but what else? He didn’t recall his family doing much for it, and not like he tried to celebrate it since he ran away.
Chuuya hesitated for a second, considering it. “Honestly? Yeah,” He said as an affectionate smile crept onto his lips. God, he was so beautiful with the city lights softly reflecting on his face. Dazai would never admit it, he didn’t think he could ever be that honest. He didn’t want to linger on the uncomfortable feeling that gave him. As he snapped back, Chuuya had already started looking around, probably for somewhere to get food from. That was a good idea. It was no secret Dazai hated any event that revolved around food but just for this once, he could allow himself to forget and try to enjoy.
“Are you coming or..?” His partners voice snapped him out of it. He hadn’t realized how far Chuuya had gotten. With fast steps, he quickly catched up to him.
As they walked, the number of people out on the streets started to decrease. He couldn’t be bothered to check the time but it must’ve already been past 10 pm. They both knew the layout of the city well, but finding somewhere for food was something they weren’t accustomed to. They roamed around in silence, neither having the energy for their usual bickering.
After a bit, they were met with the glistening sign of a 7/11. Dazai was more than glad about the discovery, his legs felt like they were about to give out. He heard Chuuya sigh,
“Fucking finally,” he turned to him with a smile again, grabbing Dazai’s arm, “Let’s go,” They practically threw themselves into the store. There were only a few other people inside, all too busy to look at them. They wasted no time heading straight for food. The aisles were softly lit, and a small group of people stuck out to Dazai’s eye. A little boy with his parents. It made him think of what used to be his family, who he never managed to really care about. Even now, when thinking back to it, he didn’t feel sadness at all. Was that normal? He could ask Chuuya but he probably wouldn’t find the answer there.
“Quit staring at people, its creepy,” Oh, right.
Chuuya was holding a sandwich in his hand and honestly, it didn’t seem very appetizing. “Let’s not get that,” He said as he took the food from his partners hand and put it back. “What do we eat then?”
Dazai had no idea. What do people usually eat during new years eve? He took a look around before laying his eyes on another aisle filled with desserts. He left Chuuya behind to go check it out. The aisle was filled with all kinds of cold sweets. After a bit of contemplating, he grabbed a slice of strawberry cake and went back where Chuuya was standing.
“Got it let’s go,” He said, showing off his pick. Chuuya only glanced at it and said nothing, which basically meant yes.
While checking out, the cashier gave them a judgemental look.
Once they were done, they decided to head to the roof of the same building. It was moments like this where Dazai really regretted having his ability. Because he couldn’t have Chuuya carry them up to the roof, he had to get up with stairs. Not to mention the broken elevator, the world seemed determined to kill him that day.
While he was compelety out of breath when he arrived, Chuuya was already peacefully sitting near the edge. Dazai sat next to him. The building was facing the port, so they would probably get a good view of fireworks.
There was a small piece of strawberry on top of the pink frosting. They started eating quickly after. Chuuya gave him a hesitant look and pursed his lips,
“I’m glad we did this y’know..it’s nice,” he stopped for a second, “The cake is, I mean,” They both knew that wasn’t what he meant, but neither of them had the guts to admit it. Still, it really was a nice moment. Everything felt so calm, so peaceful as if they weren’t killing people merely hours prior. In silence, they could pretend they were anyone else.
Soon, cheering noises could be heard from all over the city, followed by the fireworks. The new year was here. He watched Chuuya from the corner of his eye. The boy turned his head to him,
“Happy new years, Osamu,” Dazai felt a light blush creep onto his face, and smiled.
“Happy new years, Chuuya,” They locked eyes, sharing a something only the two of them could understand.
They knew it was love, cause what else could it be?
