Fanny woke up to the clock striking midnight. She had dozed off along with her aunt, so she quickly picked up everything from the work basket and put it away. It was a new year, and there was a light snow falling outside. It was beautiful, but Fanny worried if it might make the roads dangerous for her cousins returning home.
She heard the door open and the footmen hurrying to take care of everyone arriving. The noise startled her aunt awake, but thankfully it meant that everyone was safe, so she wouldn’t be worried unnecessarily.
Fanny pushed some thoughts from her head as her Aunt Norris arrived with her cousins, ready to boast of the great success they had, and critiquing Fanny’s leaving a ball of yarn at her aunt’s feet. Fanny apologized, as she had missed that when she was picking up.
Fanny then sat and listened as her Aunt Norris excitedly detailed her hopes for Miss Bertram in the coming year.
