Why Are You thе Only One Who Doesn't Notice Me?

Summary:

“Of course you do,” Mafuyu steps back closer to Ena. It's the same distance she was at before, yet it feels so much more charged. “You always remembered my favorites.”

Every word she says is like a curse. Every look she gives her just makes Ena feel sick—like she might throw up.

She hates it.

Ena Shinonome hates Mafuyu Asahina.

Chapter Text

Ena hates a lot of things.

She hates carrots, she hates the fact that her brother decided to go to the same school as her, and most of all—She hates her ex, Mafuyu Asahina.

It’s everything about her. Her perfect grades, her beautiful, soft purple hair, how her hands used to feel on her.

And worst of all, how Mafuyu won’t pay attention to her anymore.

“I don't understand why you care so much.” Mizuki leans back on Ena’s bed, watching as she wipes off all her makeup and restarts for the third time. “You guys broke up, of course she’s going to pay less attention to you.”

Ena glares at Mizuki’s form through the mirror. She just doesn’t get it. No one seems to.

“We just broke up.” Ena corrects, applying her makeup with such serious hands you’d think she’s performing a surgery.

“She used to be obsessed with me, Mizuki! Like, she would never take her hands off me. It’s weird.”

“Okay Ena.” Mizuki doesn't even bother looking at the girl anymore—she’s already realized they aren't making it to the party on time.

“She worshiped me! Like, when we would have sex—”

“Please just shut up and finish getting ready.”

Ena scoffs—she's about to argue more. This is her room. She should be allowed to talk about her asshole of an ex as much as she wants.

But her eyes drift down to her phone, looking at the clock. Airi did ask them to get to the party by 9, it's 10. So she begrudgingly focuses on her makeup.

She knows Mafuyu will be there. She always goes to Airi’s parties.

Well, she did when they were dating.

Ena pauses, the brush in her hand falling on her desk. She whips her head around, looking at Mizuki with an almost worried expression.

“You don't think Mafuyu won’t go, do you?”

“Why do you care?” Mizuki groans, her hands coming up to cover her face.

Ena doesn’t respond—she’s answered that question before.

She doesn’t care. She just wants Mafuyu to see her. To see what she lost.

Mizuki sighs, finally sitting up to face Ena directly.

“I'm sure she’ll be there,” she mumbles, her voice almost sounds like shes being forced to say it. “I'm positive she misses you, and will come to see you.”

She's just saying what she thinks Ena wants to hear.

“She better,” Ena grumbles under her breath. She picks the brush back up, adding just a bit more blush, enough for her to finally be satisfied with her appearance. She rises from her desk, moving to the full-length mirror instead, staring at her outfit.

Mafuyu loved this dress.

Ena had to dig deep in her closet to find it. She wore it on some random date she doesn’t fully remember.

What she does remember is Mafuyu’s reaction to it.

She couldn’t keep her eyes off Ena that night, and her hands never left her body. Not to mention the way Mafuyu treated her in bed that night. It was more loving than they had ever done it before.

It's probably because it's slutty. Mafuyu loved it when Ena would show her body off to her. That is precisely why she’s wearing it tonight—Mafuyu hated it when she would show off to anyone else. Any attention from her is a win for Ena.

Because she’ll have the upper hand. Obviously. No other reason.

“Are you going to stare at yourself all night, or are we going to go?” Mizuki asks, her voice audibly more annoyed.

“You’re so impatient, I'm literally done!”

“You have literally been getting ready for three hours, Ena. You won't be able to fuck Mafuyu or whatever you’re trying to do if the party is over.”

Ena rolls her eyes, hating that Mizuki has a good point.

“Wait, hold on—I am not trying to fuck Mafuyu.”

------------------------------

Airi’s Party is loud and crowded. Ena honestly doesn’t know how she knows so many people, or how she can afford such a big house for a college student.

Mizuki ditched her before they even got into the house. She told her she had something to attend to. Ena didn’t fully believe it, but she also didn't care enough to argue.

She remembers all of that.

How she ends up in Airi’s room, however? That is a mystery.

She doesn't remember walking upstairs—she doesn't even remember thinking of coming here. It was probably just a force of habit. She has spent a lot of time in Airi's room during parties after all.

A lot of time with Mafuyu.

Ena scoffs. Is that really the reason? Did she truly walk all the way up here just to find Mafuyu?

God, that’s pathetic.

She’s pathetic.

Ena turns around, walking out of the room. She makes sure to close the door as quietly as possible. No one is even up here, yet the idea of getting spotted searching around is actually terrifying.

The sight of the bathroom door opening startles Ena, her eyes catching that familiar bright pink hair.

“Airi?” She watches as Airi steps out of the bathroom, the back of her hand dragging across her mouth. It doesn't take a genius to guess what she was up to.

“Ena!” The girl gasps, her hands rush to close the bathroom door—she obviously doesn't want Ena to see who she was with, which is strange, because Ena will hear about it later anyway.

“I didn't know you came!” Airi envelops Ena in a hug, the faint scent of orange hitting her almost immediately. Ah, so it was Haruka this time.

“Why wouldn't I? I've never missed your parties,” Ena replies. She decides not to mention Airi’s little affair. It doesn't necessarily interest her right now anyway.

“Yeah, I guess you're right.” Airi looks around, then looks back at Ena with a sudden look of confusion. “Wait—why are you up here…?”

Ena freezes.

Well fuck. How can she even explain why she’s been upstairs looking around the whole time?

Airi’s love life isn't great. She knows that better than anyone. She’s heard about the strange triangle going on between her, Haruka, and Minori. Hell, even Ena’s kissed Airi a couple of times.

Yet, she would genuinely rather die than explain to anyone what she was doing.

“Yeah, I was walking around your house, hoping to find my ex instead of enjoying myself at your party.”

It’s humiliating, really.

“I uh… Thought I left something in your room!” Ena answers, her words coming out a little too quickly.

Airi studies her face, her expression shifting from confused to suspicious.

“Right…”

They both stare at each other for a moment. Ena prays to whatever god might be out there that she doesn't question any further than that.

“Well, okay.” She shrugs. Ena lets out a small sigh of relief. “Oh! I made you something!”

“Hm?”

Airi drops her voice to a whisper, which doesn't make any sense to her, considering there's no one up here. Besides Haruka, who Airi is still keeping in the bathroom.

(Yes, she basically did the same thing, but it's different for her. Obviously.)

“Well, I know that the drinks we have down there are a little too strong for you.”

Ena pauses. She feels like she should be insulted, but honestly, she is an insane lightweight, so maybe it's for the best.

“Seriously?”

“Yeah!” Ena watches the pink-haired girl’s eyes drift to the bathroom door.  “Hey… It's downstairs in the fridge. Why don't you go down there and get it?”

Airi’s nervous laugh allows everything to click. She wants Ena to leave. She’s probably trying to take Haruka into her bedroom, and again—that's none of her business.

“Right. Thank you, Airi!” Ena promptly starts walking away. She doesn't want to be back in the middle of that weird situation again.

Ena’s trip downstairs is accompanied by the faint sound of Haruka’s frustrated questions about why Airi wouldn't let her out, their voices fading into the loud, honestly horrible party music.

Akito probably picked the music. He and Airi aren't that close—but she can just tell it was him.

Truthfully, having a specially made drink for her because she's such a lightweight is incredibly embarrassing. Everyone else here can drink whatever they want. Even Mafuyu is drinking something. This isn't fair.

Wait—what?!

She looks back. No, she's not crazy. There she is. Mafuyu Asahina.

Ena seems to be frozen there, staring out into the living room where Mafuyu is talking to someone. Then, despite her better judgment, she finds herself stepping a little closer—she just needs to see who it is. That's all.

Her eyes squint to focus on the person's face in the dark light. But the second they do—her heart feels like it’s just dropped to her feet.

Shizuku Hinomori.

Ena knows all about her. She was Mafuyu’s favorite card to piss her off. Whenever they fought—and they did, quite a bit in fact—Mafuyu’s favorite lines always mentioned her.

How she was nicer. How she would ‘treat Mafuyu better than this.’

How she was better than Ena in every way.

Her eyes land on Mafuyu’s hands. Her hands are perched perfectly on her hip, the same fucking way she used to hold Ena.

She feels sick.

Pathetic.

------------------------------

Ena stares into the drink that Airi made for her. She can tell from the smell alone how weak it is.

She brings the cup to her lips, frowning when the taste hits her tongue.

It's not nearly enough for how she feels.

Ena steps up to Airi’s little homemade bar, her hand just hovering over the bottle of tequila. Look, she might not be a good drinker. In fact, she can't hold liquor for the life of her.

But she does drink—especially after something like that.

“Ah, excuse me…”

The sudden voice makes Ena freeze, her head whipping around to meet its source.

“Mafuyu?”

“Ena…”

Mafuyu’s eyes drag down her body in a way that feels sickening. It's almost as if she's sizing Ena up, like she's going to eat her. She feels so small whenever she's under Mafuyu’s gaze. The way her cold, indigo eyes run over her makes her skin feel frozen, and on fire at the same time.

Ena knows Mafuyu by now. She knows the different looks in her eyes and what they mean. It's extremely obvious that she’s checking Ena out, though. You don't need a PHD in Mafuology to understand that. (Which Ena absolutely has)

“What? Did Shizuku get bored of you that fast?” Ena bites at the girl, her eyes narrowing as she stares into Mafuyu’s icy ones.

“She had something to do—I don't care, I want to talk about you…”

Ena scoffs. She can't believe the audacity of this woman. She has some nerve to show up to her best friend's party and flirt with her so shamelessly.

“You are such a bitch.”

Mafuyu just laughs in response, that sickening, almost mocking laugh. The laugh Ena has heard countless times.

Bitch isn't even a strong enough word to describe Mafuyu.

She's evil, twisted, horrible, vile… Just about every word that’s been listed in a thesaurus under the word ‘Bad’ can be used to describe her.

Honestly, Ena doesn't even know how she stayed with her for so long. How could she have possibly endured being around Mafuyu?

“I like this dress…” Mafuyu speaks up again, completely ignoring her insult. She steps back a bit, her gaze slowly traveling over Ena once again, this time taking in her whole body.

This was her goal, was it not? She spent twenty minutes finding this dress for this exact reaction. So she could laugh in Mafuyu’s face and tell her she’ll never be able to have her again.

So then, why does she feel so incredibly… hot?

Why does Mafuyu’s gaze make heat grow down deep inside of her? Where does this feeling of her blood surging through her like fire come from?

It's anger. It has to be.

“I know,” Ena replies, her voice all too small for her liking.

Mafuyu hasn't even touched her. She’s just staring—and yet it's enough to make her pulse race like this. Knowing Mafuyu still has the upper hand on her is horrible. Yet, it’s not nearly as horrible as the feeling bubbling up inside of her.

She sighs, her eyes reluctantly moving up to meet Mafuyu’s once again.

“So what? Do you want to come home with me?”

Notes:

Useless fact for this chapter:

If you are wondering abt the lore, Minori and Haruka are in an on-and-off relationship. They break up every other week. Whenever they do break up, one of them always runs to Airi for comfort (which usually means sleeping together). Airi does, in fact, know that shes their outlet she just doesnt gaf.

(Haruka usually gets her more, that's why Ena knows her perfume smell by heart)
