Case Whisperer: The fluffy parts

Summary:

Imagine a universe where Juliet and Shawn could fall in love without having to worry about working together. Imagine Shawn stumbling into a barista job, and Juliet having a daily coffee at his coffee shop.

I'm combining this idea with all 31 prompts from Fluffuary 2026 (in a different order). First there will be 31 days of only fluff, and then 20 days of doubt and angst. Enjoy the ride.

Chapter 1: Love at first sight (Shawn)

Notes:

Hold up! Technically this isn't the beginning. The real chapter 1 introduces how this AU differs from canon over here: Case Whisperer: The other parts [Chapter 1]

Here's how they meet for the first time.

Chapter Text

A thirsty Shawn Spencer entered a coffee shop to get himself a pineapple juice. There were only a few customers at this hour, and Shawn was glad to see that the seat with the best vantage point was still available. He sat down by the counter and waited for the barista to return to take his order. Oddly enough, nobody came.

Shawn may be great at many things, but waiting is not one of them. He tapped his fingers on the counter and looked restlessly behind it but there was no indication that the staff was around. The juice machine stood quiet, taunting him. The staff aprons hung unused at the wall, beckoning him to come over. There's no harm in borrowing things, right? In fact, he'd be doing the staff a favour by doing their jobs for them. He almost felt obliged to do it, for their sake.

When nobody was looking, he snuck in behind the counter and grabbed himself an apron. As he tied it behind his back he noticed a pile of barista hats and put one of those on as well. There, now he even looks the part. He caught the glance of one customer but nobody cared what he was up to. They all already had their coffees. Shawn picked up a big empty glass and went over to the juice machine and poured himself a fresh delicious pineapple juice.

He heard the little bell from the customer entrance ding. He sipped his delicious juice and glanced at the staff door, but still no staff came in. He turned around to have a look at the new customer and his heart did a little skip at the sight of her. She sat by the counter where he had just been and their eyes met for a moment. Her long, golden hair framed her face in just the right way. She seemed tense, like she had had one of those days, and Shawn had a brief urge to make her day better. That is, until he noticed which seat she had chosen; the one with the best vantage point. His. A childish irritation bubbled up inside of him.

Shawn went over to her and leaned in close. "You're in my seat," he said, matter of fact.

She raised an eyebrow and the cutest dimple grew from a smile at the corner of her mouth. "Am I? Don't you have one on your side?"

Shawn blinked as it took him a moment for the words to sink in. Then he remembered the apron and hat he was wearing, which obviously made her think he worked there. Huh, this could be fun. "What I meant to say is that it's my favourite seat, for my favourite customers."

She didn't seem to know how to take that. She raised both of her eyebrows and laughed. "I'm sorry, do you want me to move?"

Shawn bit his lip. Did he? There was something about this woman that made him curious. He wanted to know more about her. Get to know her. "Not anymore," he said.
