Work Text:

It was about to be a new year, U.A. was having a party. The students were also excited, all waiting for it to be 12:00 AM to celebrate the fireworks that would light up the city. You and Bakugo were sitting on the edge, on the top floor of U.A. Academy, waiting for the fireworks to start. The night was beautiful...

The two of you held sparklers, one in each hand.

"Damn, it's almost New Year's... time flies, doesn't it?"

"Yeah.” You respond, looking at the sky.

Bakugo leaned his head back, looking up at the starry sky. Fireworks would be blasting up in the air in a few more minutes.

The night sky in U.A. was beautiful, stars scattered across the inky darkness. It almost looked magical.

"You think there'll be any villains trying to blow the party up or something?"

“God I hope not. Not for what I have planned, anyway.”

Bakugo glanced sideways at you, one eyebrow twitching.

"Tch. What do you have planned?" he asked, voice sharp but low—like he was already bracing for something stupid. His grip on the sparkler tightened slightly.

The wind brushed past, carrying the distant hum of students laughing below and music floating from the courtyard.

He didn’t say it out loud… but if anything messed with this night? He’d blow it to hell himself.

“You’ll see.” You smile softly at him, looking at the clock. One minute left.

"You and your damn mysterious bullshit," he muttered, looking away. Despite his tone, there was a hint of anticipation in his expression. He was curious, despite himself.

30 seconds.

20 seconds.

Bakugo's grip on the sparkler tightened even more. The anticipation in the air was palpable.

What the hell did you have planned?

he thought, trying to figure it out. He was tempted to ask, but that would just ruin the surprise.

10 seconds.

He could faintly hear the countdown below, people cheering in anticipation.

He couldn't resist looking at you again. Your smile seemed more than just happy—it seemed knowing. Like you had something up your sleeve. Damnit, what are you planning?

5…

Bakugo's heart started to race. This anticipation was making him restless. There was something in your expression, something that told him this wasn't just some normal celebration.

4...

He wondered again what the hell you were planning. It was making his impatience and competitive side rear their heads. He wanted to know now.

3…

You turned fully to him, eyes soft but shining with quiet purpose.

The world around you—the distant laughter, the music—faded just a little. It was like everything had narrowed down to this moment. This breath.

Bakugo froze.

He wasn’t used to being looked at like this. Not by anyone who actually mattered. His throat tightened slightly—something he’d never admit later—and his usual scowl flickered into something unreadable for once: vulnerable confusion beneath all that pride and firepower.

And then, you kiss him.

1...!

The world faded away entirely.

All thoughts, all sounds, all doubts were swept away by that one simple act. One soft, gentle press of your lips against his.

For a split second, he just…

Froze.

His entire body went taut, his red eyes wide with shock. Then… he started to melt.

Slowly, carefully, he cupped your face in his calloused hands, closing his eyes and pulling you closer.

You break apart the kiss after a moment, the fireworks blooming in the sky.

The world rushed back, in a burst of color and sound. Fireworks painted the sky in a brilliant array of light and color, a perfect backdrop to the moment.

A part of him wanted to pull you back in for more, to drown himself in the feeling again—but the rest of him took over. His eyes flickered from you to the fireworks, and he couldn't help but crack a small smile.

Damnit...

He'd never admit it, but his heart was racing.

"Happy new year, Katsuki."

Bakugo grunted softly, trying (and failing) to look nonchalant. His hands were still cupping your face, his thumb tracing a path over your cheekbone.

"Happy new year, smartass," he muttered.

The fireworks continued to burst and bloom above, but right now… he couldn't tear his eyes away from you.
