Megumi Fushiguro may have forgotten it was New Years Eve.
He went on about his day as usual. He stumbled out of bed to go eat, went on a horrendously tiring mission, and came back to the comfort of his room before ultimately passing out for a few hours.
Everything was normal.
Sure, Yuji and Nobara had looked like they were up to something when he had seen them- but given how idiotic they usually are, he had no good reason to assume anything was different about today. It's not like the stupid grins they were sporting ever meant much aside from getting themselves into trouble.
Gojo was on a mission overseas. There was nobody to talk his ear off about celebrating properly or drag him into the freezing cold to watch the sky light up. He swears there was absolutely nothing to remind him of the fact that it was a holiday.
Aside from the loud, persistent knocking at his door.
Megumi blinks once. Then twice. A couple more times. The last thing he remembered was coming back to his room and falling straight onto his bed. He glances outside and finds that its dark, a sliver of moonlight slipping past his curtains and onto his floor. He must have been out for awhile.
He's even more bewildered when he picks up his phone. It's 11:42 PM. He knows there's only one person who would dare to bang on his door at this time, but why?
He picks himself up out of bed with the thought that Yuji better have a good reason or he's getting punched. The moment the door cracks, the boy in question pushes his way inside, shoving past Megumi with a cheerful grin. "Sorry I'm late!"
Yuji fumbles around in the dark for a moment before switching on the light to his friends' room, stifling a laugh at the way the dark-haired boy groans. Megumi sends him the best glare he can manage and rubs at his eyes in annoyance. "Late for what?"
Yuji tilts his head in confusion. "New Years?"
Megumi feels very, very stupid as he glances at the calendar on his wall, letting out a small 'oh'. When his attention turns back to Yuji, he notices a plastic bag dangling from his hand. "What's in there?"
"Soba!" Yuji proudly exclaims, before making his way to Megumi's bed. He sits down, crossing his legs and patting the spot next to him. Megumi can't tell whether or not he's annoyed by his audacity to waltz in here and act like he owns the place, but he joins him nonetheless. "You've gotta eat some today!"
Megumi sighs as Yuji opens the bag and hands him a container, all while complaining about how long it took to get delivered. He thanks him quietly, starting to eat right away. Megumi had slept through dinner, and he was starving. He has a feeling Yuji was worried when he didn't see him at the table, but he doesn't comment on it. They both had their own little ways of caring like this.
Yuji is busy babbling on about his festive day anyways, and it doesn't take long to notice Megumi isn't saying anything back aside from his earlier appreciation. "Are you alright?"
"Huh? Yeah. Just don't care much about New Years."
Yuji lets out a gasp, his mouth falling wide open. So dramatic. Megumi thinks it's cute. "Seriously?!"
"Seriously." He confirms, taking a rather large bite of noodles. "I guess I never did all that much for it growing up."
Yuji shakes his head like he can't even imagine such a thing- and for someone who went above and beyond to celebrate each and every holiday, he probably couldn't. "Do you go to shrines?"
"Yeah, Gojo used to take us."
Yuji seems somewhat relieved at that answer. "You and Tsumiki?"
Megumi nods. Tsumiki used to enjoy celebrating. She'd wake him up for the sunrise and suit him up for the cold. Gojo would come later in the day with food, and always a stupid plan to have fun. Some years they'd go to a firework show, some years they'd just stay in. Gojo would always buy sparklers and make the kids light them up with him, despite Tsumiki's worried protests about a fire hazard. Megumi doesn't realize he's begun smiling until Yuji nudges him playfully.
"My gramps used to take me to shrines too."
"Oh yeah?"
"Yeah." Yuji's lips curve upwards, eyes crinkling at the corners. "But he wouldn't let me stay up. I snuck downstairs when he fell asleep to watch TV anyways. My favorite anime used to only broadcast that late."
Megumi lets out a huff of amusement. "Dork."
Yuji shrugs, knowing it's true. He glances down at his phone. 11:53. It's almost time.
"Do you think we'll see fireworks tonight?"
"No way." Megumi stares at him in bewilderment. "We're in the middle of the mountains."
Yuji lets out a dramatic sigh, "I was really hoping we could." He takes the last bite of his food, feeling a bit embarrassed when he notices Megumi still has nearly half of his left. "Oh, Kugisaki wants to go out tomorrow. Said she's waking us both up bright and early."
Megumi grimaces. "Is she awake right now?"
"Nah. She said she needs her beauty sleep. She needs it to find love this year."
Megumi smiles fondly at that, shaking his head in disbelief. Like he said, idiots. "I think that's the least of our worries."
"Of course you think that." Yuji teases, poking at his arm. "If you don't want love for the New Year, then what do you want?"
"I never said I didn't want love." He rolls his eyes, swatting at the hand currently still touching him. "But I guess I just want everyone to be alright. I want to keep going on missions with everybody. That's my wish."
"Fushiguro..." Yuji clenches at his chest, wiping a fake tear from his eye. "I'm so touched! That's the nicest thing you've ever said."
"Yeah, well, if a curse kills you before I get the chance, I'll be pissed."
Yuji snorts at that. Megumi isn't fooling him, and they both know it. "I guess I want to stay with everyone too." His voice becomes softer as he locks eyes with the boy next to him. "How about we stick together for the New Year?"
Megumi can't hold his gaze. Yuji looks at him with so much care that it makes his chest ache. He's always had a way of making Megumi feel weak with the kindness that just never seems to stop flowing. He lets out a huff, staring down at his food like it's the most interesting thing in the world. "Yeah, sure."
Yuji smiles warmly for a moment longer, before checking the time again. 11:57. He shifts closer to Megumi. "Sooooo...." Yuji starts wiggling his eyebrows, speaking far too casually for what he's about to ask. "Got any plans for a New Years kiss?"
Megumi stills, cursing himself for the way his cheeks start to burn. "The hell are you talking about?" His voice comes out too tensely to pass off as being annoyed. How embarrassing.
"You said you wouldn't mind love!"
"So?!"
"So we should kiss! You and me!" Yuji purses his lips, making them stick out towards Megumi. "Like this!"
He leans in teasingly, letting out a yelp as Megumi immediately pushes him back. He's giggling to himself now. Megumi just shoots him a glare. "I know what kissing is, you idiot." He crosses his arms, narrowing his eyes. "We're not doing that. You don't even like guys."
"Huh?" Yuji sits back up, blinking at him in confusion. "Uhm, yeah I do?"
"Yeah, real funny Itadori."
"No, I'm being serious!" Yuji's staring at him all funnily now. Megumi can see his neck flushing slightly. "I never told you?"
Oh. Megumi stares back. "...No?"
"Well." Yuji clears his throat, glancing away. The flush has crept up to his cheeks now. "Recent revelation, anyways. So, can we kiss?"
Megumi doesn't say anything for a long second. He swallows heavily. "I don't know if that's a good idea."
Yuji pouts, "Why not?"
Megumi wants to call him dense. He wants to tell him everything he's feeling. That kissing is a horrible idea, because he's been pining for him since the moment they met. But he doesn't. He just scolds him like always. "You shouldn't kiss your friends."
He watches as Yuji's expression falters slightly, but the boy doesn't give up. Why is he being so persistent? "It'll give us good luck for the year!"
"Who told you that?" Megumi looks unimpressed. This is such a bad idea, and he knows it. He'll never be able to get over Yuji if he lets this happen. He doesn't even know if he can as is. "That's stup-"
"Fushiguro." Yuji's voice sounds nervous now. He hesitates for a moment, before speaking up again. "If I'm being honest, I just really want to kiss you. Like, in general. Real bad."
Megumi freezes at his words. Suddenly, he's feeling rather hot, and his room feels way too small. He opens his mouth, but nothing comes out. Megumi glances down at his phone, and watches as the time hits 12.
"You're messing with me."
"I wouldn't joke about that."
“…You better not.” Megumi mutters shakily. He reaches out before he can overthink it, gently cupping Yuji's face, eyes drifting down to his lips.
Megumi's stomach flips when he looks back up. God. Yuji's eyes are so pretty- a warm honey brown that never fails to make him melt. His heart pounds in his chest as Yuji's hand comes up to clutch at his sleeve, tugging him closer. He takes this as his chance to lean in, lashes fluttering shut.
Their kiss is brief.
Yuji is surprised at how soft and sweet Megumi is. Greedily, he wants more. He lets out a quiet exhale, pressing another kiss to the boys' lips. It's tender, and a bit clumsy.
They're both embarrassingly pink when they pull back.
"Happy New Years, Fushiguro." Yuji whispers, a cheeky smile spreading across his face. "You know, if we keep this up throughout the year, I think it'll be a great one."
"Oh, right. For good luck, huh?" Megumi teases, grinning as Yuji laughs. His thumb rubs softly against Yuji's cheek as he leans back in. "Guess we've gotta. Happy New Years, you idiot."
