Chapter Text
Outside the concert hall
''I tell you what. I'll make some special ones just for you on another day.'' She told Agumon blushing, standing in the door towards the band room, Gabumon already standing there a little impatient.
One last look at Tai, she took a deep breath and turned around, bracing herself. As she had made the cookies all morning, she had felt confident. She knew how she felt about Matt, she had known for a while. The blonde rockstar had taken her heart over the past months, them talking a lot more again, writing. Sometimes over stupid things, sometimes about the digi world, but sometimes, when it seemed like nobody was watching the talks got deep, intense and- different.
It had all started as the group chat exploded at the first help signal that came from Gabumon. Matt had gone to the digi world together with Takeru and the others right away, not even waiting for any of the other older destined to answer. She still remembered how she tried to call him, trying to figure out how to help, barely ever seen or heard Matt in pure panic. He mostly was that way when it was about his brother or Gabumon. It was a sweet gesture towards the most important two in his life, but seeing the closed up Matt like this always worried her, wanting to help and be there, calm him down.
So it had surprised her even more as he called her that evening, apologizing for not answering. He could've just texted her, but he had decided to call and Sora immediately asked what happened, listening to the whole story how Gabumon almost died by the whippings of the digimon influenced by the dark ring and had sent the signal and how, alongside Davis and the others had saved the town and destroyed the dark tower, Gabumon being able to digivolve again. She was literally able to see his face light up through the phone, talking about Garurumon and their fight. He had missed it and she knew it.
They had talked almost the whole night about the digi world, their digimon and their adventures. About their crests and- Somehow any time one of them went back into the digi world or Matt had heard a story from TK they were back on the phone in the evening, talking. It had felt different than with the others. She had felt- special and- like Matt and her- Had something different.
Looking down at the cookies she took a deep breath, realising her hands were trembling at the thought. For her it was and she hoped that it was for him, too. She didn't know how to approach him, but a small part of her hoped that his favorite cookies self made would be a good start to more than just calling every second night and sometimes seeing each other in a larger group.
She felt a nudge at her leg and looked down at Piyomon who smiled at her and said ''He'll love them Sora. Because they're from you.''
''Matt, you have a visitor!" Gabumon called, coming back into the backstage room of the band which made Matt look up surprised from tuning his guitar.
He knew that their friends where coming, but Tai had written him that Agumon and him would already sit down, since they were meeting up with Izzy and the others in the concert hall. His dad was working. TK was at Kens christmas party dinner. Who would come?
Before he could ask his digimon partner though he saw a person, he would always be happy to see turn the corner, alongside with her pink bird like digimon, smiling at him nervously, holding a present in her hand that even from a far smelled delicious. Sora is here to see me? She wanted to see me before the concert and she brought a present. For me? Why was she here? Not that Matt minded. If it was for him, he would spent every single minute he could with the red haired beauty that was now looking at him, all flustered and beautiful. How could I ever lay my eyes on any other girl if I have Sora in my life?
Laying his guitar to the side he stood up and said ''Sora. You're here.''
It made the red haired girl just blush even deeper, before replying ''Of course. I wanted to see your concert and see you.''
See you. Matt had never had feelings until a few weeks ago for a girl, but his heart was racing out of his chest right now at the sight of his long time best friend and now- No, she wasn't a crush in his head. Sora was way too important to him to be considered a crush. The reddening cheeks and the warm feeling in his stomach at the words told him something completely different, too.
''See me?'' He asked with his small cocky smile taking two more steps to her, trying to not take his own emotions take over.
Sora turned even redder and nodded and replied, ''Yes and to give you a little christmas present before the show.''
Looking surprised he asked ''For me?'' His cheeks slowly started to feel hotter, too.
He heard his band members snicker in the background, one of them saying ''Oh, so that's why Matt never lets any girl close to him or try to date one of them. There already-''
Before his drummer could finish the sentence Matt shot him a glare, but then looked back at Sora, still a bit stunned, but smiled at her, putting his hands under hers, holding the present, feeling the warmth from her hands through her gloves. She giggled a bit and looked down, but then back up at him. She wasn't annoyed by what his band members said. That was a good sign right?
''Come on, let's go to another room.'' He said, shooting a look to Gabumon and Piymon who right away acted like they were super busy, talking. He did want to be alone with Sora right now.
There was nothing more that he wanted than spending time alone with her. He knew the concert would start soon, but- Sighing he put a hand on Soras back, leading her into a side room where he had got ready earlier. As they got inside he closed the door behind them, feeling his own cheeks heat up, realising what a fool his bandmates had made out of him.
''I am sorry about my band mates. They make stupid jokes.'' He apologized, which made Sora shake her head smiling.
''It's alright. They probably just want you to be happy.'' She replied, smiling.
Sora, the one with the gentle heart and mind, even trying to defend his band mates who were trying to make jokes about them. That was the girl he fell in love with. Deeply. She really was special in ways that she didn't even understand. Matt wanted to show her, but he was scared she didn't feel the same, but why was she here, bringing him a present? She could've just waited in the hall with Tai and the others. Did she maybe like him, too?
Laughing a little, looking down for a moment, but then back at Sora he smiled at her, feeling warmth all over his body.
Sora smiled and held the present out to him. ''Those are for you.'' She now added. ''I hope you like them.''
Matt took the present and looked at her, before slowly opening the box that smelled like heaven. ''Chocolate chip peanutbutter cookies?'' He asked surprised.
The girl smiled and nodded, replying ''You told me they're you're favorite, remember?'' She replied.
Of course he remembered. He just didn't think she would remember and also bake them for him. His heart fluttered at the gesture, looking at the absolutely delicious looking cookies that did smell like heaven.
''I made them for you as a present.'' Sora added. ''I hope you like them and they taste good, but Piymon was testing them and she loved them.''
At her nervous look Matt smiled at her, not having one doubt that they were. ''I am sure they are amazing and I really want to try one, but-''
Just as he wanted to say something his drummer called ''Matt, we have to be on stage in 5 Minutes!''
Matt looked at Sora apologizing but Sora shook her head, smiling. ''You go and rock that stage. You can eat them later.''
Sighing, Matt put the cookies on the side table, looking at the door and then back at Sora. Suddenly the concert didn't seem so important anymore, but he knew that he couldn't dump all the people in the concert hall, even though- He really considered doing it for Sora, but- He heard the call of his band members again and sighed, but before thinking took Sora into his arms and hugged her.
Sora was completely surprised, but hugged back, smiling into his chest, taking in his scent. Had Matt always smelled this good? The hug felt incredibly warm and lasted just a tad too long to be meant as friends.
As they broke apart, still half holding each other, Matt asked her ''Tell you what. I know a great dumpling place not too far from here. How about we go there after the concert, the two of us and eat some dumplings and those cookies?''
Is he asking me out on a date? Yamato Ishida was really asking Sora out on a date. He also wanted to spend more time with her. It made Sora smile from one ear to another, looking at the pretty blonde singer, who smiled at her, waiting for an answer, as one of his band members called again.
So she nodded and then pushed him a little towards the door ''That sounds great. And now go. I'll see you on stage.''
''That was one kind of an evening.'' Tai stated again, after Ken, Davis, Yoley and Cody had left and it was only the elder destined and Kari and TK again.
''I'm just glad everyone is okay.'' Sora said and all the others nodded, sighing.
They had been told there was something bad coming. They knew war wasn't over but with digimon being in the human world again- It felt scary. But they also knew that they weren't alone. A look under her she saw Piyomon, holding her hand, while talking to Gabumon. A look to her right, she saw all her friends standing there, everyone except for- She looked to her left, seeing Matt standing there, who was watching her, too. As he saw her look, he gave her a small, but meaningful smile.
It had felt like an eternity since he had asked her out on a date before the concert. So much had happened in between in so little time. The digimon, destroying the concert hall had only been like over an hour ago but it felt like-
Looking down on the ground Sora felt terrible for Matt and his band and for everyone in the hall. She swished she could've stopped them before there had been too much damage, but the dark tower- Why was there a dark tower? Who did that to the real world and how could they stop them. There had to be a way and they had to find that way, yet- her mind always wandered back to something else.
The talk they had before the concert, Matt asking her on a date after the concert. It felt so far away and yet at the same time, it had felt so real. Well, the cookies were burried under the concert hall now. Yet, as the walls came crashing down he had jumped right to her, saving her from all the stones falling onto her, having looked for her first. Not for anyone else, but her.
Blushing a little she looked back at Matt, who put a hand on her back, which startled her for a moment, but she immediately relaxed. It was Matt. The same Matt she had been friends with for so long. The Matt she had fallen in love with and who had asked her out on a date before his concert.
''Whatever it is what we have to do, there's not much we can do anymore tonight. How about we grab something to eat to at least end the day on a good note?'' Jou now suddenly suggested, trying to cheer up the mood a bit.
''Oh yes, I am so hungry!'' Agumon and Tai said in union which made the others laugh.
''You guys really never change.'' TK mused, which they other nodded, too. ''But food does sound great.''
His gaze went immediately to Kari who smiled and nodded. Sora always wondered how long and how much more growing up it would take them to realise what they had was way beyond any friendship. Which reminded her- A side glance to Matt she noticed, that he was still staring at her, which made her blush, feeling his hand on her back again, hoping he would not let go of it.
Fully looking at him he saw the question in her eyes. As if he wanted to ask her, if she still wanted to go on that date. And yes, she wanted to. Cookies or no cookies. So she slowly nodded, feeling herself get even redder.
Matt then said ''Sora and I can't. We still got to go eat some dumplings together.''
The other digi destined looked a bit surprised at them, but after a good 3 seconds TK was the first one to break out into a smile, realising that his brother was refering to still going on a date with the red haired carrier of the crest of love. He finally asked her out? It was about time. He thought to himself, shaking his head grinning, as the smile of Tai and Kari softened, too.
Clapping Matts back quickly Tai said ''Well, we don't want to disturb your guys date. Gabumon, Piymon, you guys want to come eat with us and leave those two lovebirds alone?''
Piyomon and Gabumon immediately nodded and Matt looked grateful at his best friend who winked at him. Then without thinking he took Soras hand smiling and said to the others, not stopping his gaze at the beautiful girl in front of him ''See you guys tomorrow.''
With that, he walked off and Sora followed him, her hand tingling from the touch, but neither of them wanting to let go. He had just told their friends that they were going on a date. He wasn't afraid for them to know. Sora wasn't either, but the fact that Matt spoke so openly about it- He really wanted it, didn't he? He at least made her feel like he did and that was what counted for now.
Before they knew it they were walking on the bridge over the beach, in a sweet silence, holding hands. It had only been a few minutes, but Sora suddenly felt all the weight of the past two hours fall off her shoulders, being with Matt. They didn't need to say anything. They understood each other without words. Yet, probably one of them should say something, right?
Matt suddenly stopped at the middle of the bridge where you could see the beach right under and on the other side, the skyscrapers, lighting up the night. He leaned over the bridge for a moment and Sora did the same, both staring out into the sea. It felt so calm, beautiful.
The blond boy then looked back at Sora, the girl he had wanted to go on a date with for so long and now in the middle of this situation it felt so crazy, odd. Yet, it felt right and- No, he should not hesitate. Yes, there was a war going on, but that didn't change his feelings. Maybe, especially because there was a war, it was time to take action. To do something. To show her, what she really meant to him.
''I am sorry that you never got to ate these cookies.'' Sora mumbled which made Matt almost laugh. ''I'll make you some again when all of this- Is over.''
Not, because what she said was stupid, but because of how geniune the apology was while the situation why the cookies were burried under ruins of a concert hall was neither of their fault. He would've loved to taste the cookies, because they were made by the girl that he loved and also his favorite, but he did not care as much about them as about the fact that all of them were save and alive and he could be here with her, right now. I'll make you some again, when all of this is over. That hit home with him at least. When would all of this be over?
Turning completely to Sora, he put his hand over hers again which made her look up, being flushed, by the cold and his touches. ''I'd very much like that, but this isn't just about cookies for me Sora. What I really care about is you.'' He stated, not knowing where the confidence came from.
Maybe it was the fact that they had known each other for so long. Maybe it was the cold, getting to his head, or the words they had exchanged before the concert. Maybe it was because they once again didn't know when the war was over and any day could be their last, but he was confident in what he wanted to do. What he wanted to be. With Sora and only Sora.
What I really care about is you. Those words rang in Soras head again and again and she couldn't believe what she was hearing right now.
Taking a deep breath, Matt, with a swift motion turned both of them, so they would look at each other and add ''I know this isn't the way you usually do this, on barely the first date- but- We don't know about tomorrow, but I do know about my feelings for you, Sora. I've been waiting to talk to you about them and then you just suddenly stood there with the cookies and then the thing with the digimon attacking the concert hall, almost destroying any chance of us, ever dating.'' Both shivered at the thought, shaking their head simultaneously.
''I want to take you out on dates, buy you flowers, pick you up for school every day and show everyone that we're together and I will. But I don't want to wait for that until war is over to miss my chance. I want to be together with you, Sora.'' He finished his small speech, staring into those beautiful red brown eyes that looked at him in surprise.
Yet, Sora could feel that he meant it. This was serious to him and he wanted to be with her. He didn't want to wait for the war to be over, to miss a chance on her. He could never miss a chance on her, but-
''I don't want the war to end either to be with you, Yamato.'' She replied, her face now beat red, but she meant it.
That was all it took for Matt to grin wider than he had probably done- ever and take the last small step to her, putting his hands on her waist. Soras hands automatically found it's way to his neck, feeling really nervous, yet excited. The night had been nothing like she expected, but- It already felt perfect in it's own way. Matt and her were together now. He was her boyfriend.
Pulling her closer Sora closed her eyes, feeling his breath on hers, not knowing what to expect since she had never been kissed before, but she wanted Matt to be her first kiss. And her last one.
Right before their lips met, she already felt his smile against her lips, and his whisper ''Finally'' before his soft lips finally met hers in a sweet kiss.
All the cold and all the events of the night vanished right out of both of their heads as they slowly kissed on the bridge, embraced with each other, just feeling each other and each others lips, moving against each other. It was as if Soras lips had a mind of their own, moving against Matts, while her hole body seemed like on fire. Matt, who slowly deepened the kiss felt the same, his head going crazy over Soras hands in his neck, playing with the little hair there. No touch, no kiss ever had made him feelf this electric and he wished it would never end.
He pulled her even closer, his head screaming in ecstasy as she had said yes to be his girlfriend and them kissing. This was better than any christmas gift he could have ever received in his whole entire life. Sora was his girlfriend. She liked him back, she kissed him back and no matter what would happen, they were together. They would get through this together as a couple.
The kiss lasted for a few more seconds until they had to break apart to catch their breath, looking at each other and both smiling widely. This was the beginning of something beautiful and nothing could change that. Except for-
Both of their thoughts were interrupted by Soras stomach, grumbling which immediately made her blush and look away, but Matt just laughed softly, breaking apart from her, but not before kissing her shortly again for three seconds, taking her hand right after, intertwining his fingers with her.
Sora looked at him, flushed but he just said ''Come on, I promised you some dumplings.''
